6 Veterans Court The purpose of the Veterans Court is to provide intensive treatment and supervision to Veterans to promote public safety and reduce recidivism. Participants who successfully complete the program receive a certificate of completion, public recognition during graduation, may have the opportunity to serve in the Court s Peer Mentor Program and may be considered for early termination of their program. The CCVTCP is a minimum of six (6) months to twentyfour (24) months commitment divided in phases; however, the amount of time Veterans spend in the court is determined by their plea agreement and individual progress in treatment. Participants are expected to meet with the Community Supervision Officer (CSO) and follow all of the terms and conditions of the sentence of probation of agreement. Discharge, termination, or involuntary withdrawal from the program will result in a sentence in accordance with the full range of punishment for the offense. Cameron County is home to over 19,544 Veterans and their families. It is estimated that 1% of people incarcerated are Veterans and that 25% of incarcerated Veterans suffer mental illness. The Cameron County Veterans Treatment Court Program (CCVTCP) began in January The court relies on the cooperation and collaboration between the criminal justice system, Tropical Texas Behavioral Health, community agencies, and the offenders. The court requires the Judge, probation officer, and defense counsel to collaboratively pursue a path that help solve the Veterans issues. The CCVTCP presently handles felony and misdemeanor cases. VETERANS COURT EXPECTATIONS SHOW UP, BE COMPLETELY HONEST, TRY HARD, AND BE ACCOUNTABLE Treat others with the deepest respect; this includes respecting the opinions and feelings of other participants and the CCVTCP team.
