1 ENMU-ROSWELL ASSOCIATE DEGREE IN DENTAL HYGIENE PROGRAM INFORMATION AND CHECKLIST Thank you for your interest in the ENMU-Roswell Associate Degree in Dental Hygiene. Students desiring to complete a degree in dental hygiene should contact the Program Director at to indicate your interest and to obtain current advising regarding requirements for the program. The accompanying information in this packet from the university catalog details the sequence of courses offered by the university. Students interested in the Dental Hygiene program must complete all Level I courses and apply for continuation into the Level II Dental Hygiene core courses. The Program Director and university advising staff can provide information regarding transferability of general education courses completed at other accredited institutions. The ENMU-Roswell Associate of Applied Science in Dental Hygiene provides the didactic and clinical skills necessary to meet today s changing oral health care needs. The program in dental hygiene is accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation [and has been granted the accreditation status of initial accreditation ]. The Commission is a specialized accrediting body recognized by the United States Department of Education. Admission is limited. Credit hour ratios: Lecture 1:1, Laboratory 1:3, Clinic 1:4, Practicum 1:6. DENTAL PROGRAMS Dental Education Program Courses in the ENMU-Roswell Dental Education Program are designed to provide educational opportunities for students who are interested in a dental career. In addition, some courses may meet the requirements for continuing education needed by individuals working in the dental field. Students may enroll in any of the dental program courses after completion of the university skills placement test and any appropriate developmental courses or with permission of the instructor. Continuation to the Certificate in Dental Assisting or the Associate Degree in Dental Hygiene Program requires approval from a Review Committee to assure that students are ready to move forward in the curriculum. 1

To be considered for continuation, students must meet the following at the time of review by the Review Committee: 1. Be in good standing with the university. 2. Have all required documentation on file in the Admissions and Records Office. 3. Have a current application to ENMU-Roswell on file in the Admission and Records office. 4. Have completed all required developmental courses based on completion of the placement examination. 5. Have completed all Level 1 courses 6. Have a 2.50 or higher GPA in the Level 1 requirements excluding developmental courses. 7. Have completed all immunization requirements for the program 8. Have current CPR certification through the American Heart Association. 9. Have current certification in Dental Radiography through the New Mexico Board of Dental Health Care or completion of DHYG 205 Dental Radiography with a grade of C or higher. Please note: Students with Current certification in Dental Radiography through the New Mexico Board of Dental Health Care may submit a notarized copy of current Dental Radiography Certificate issued by the NM Board of Dental Health Care to request waiving of the requirement to complete DHYG 205 Dental Radiography. Please note that students with a NM certification will be required to pass the final examination in DHYG 205 with a grade of 74% or higher to receive credit for the course. Mandatory drug screening is required during the first week of the program and will be scheduled by the Division of Health faculty. Students must pass the mandatory drug screening to remain in the program. Students exhibiting signs of impaired clinical judgment related to suspected use of chemical substances, legal or otherwise, will be removed from the classroom, laboratory, or clinical setting immediately. At that time, the instructor will implement steps according to the 2

5 Total Hours Required for Degree 87.5 Continuation Process and Timeline Student applications for continuation into the Level II Dental Hygiene courses must be submitted to the Review Committee by October 1. The Review Committee will evaluate each request and determine the advising needs for each potential student. Individual advising appointments will be made with each student prior to December 1 to assure that the student is enrolling in the correct courses listed for completion in Level I during the Spring semester. The Review Committee will re-evaluate student progress in a meeting held at the end of the Spring semester to identify students who have met all continuation requirements for Level II including the required GPA. Up to ten students with the highest GPA who meet all requirements for continuation will be approved for progression into the Level II Dental Hygiene courses. The university may determine that approval of students for progression into the Dental Hygiene Level II courses will be completed every two years based on availability of qualified dental hygiene clinical faculty. In that situation, students will be notified at least a year prior to the initiation of the biannual plan to assure that adequate time is allowed for planning. Accreditation Compliance: The Commission on Dental Accreditation will review complaints that relate to a program s compliance with the accreditation standards. The Commission is interested in the sustained quality and continued improvement of dental and dental related education programs but does not intervene on behalf of individuals or act as a court of appeal for individuals in matters of admission, appointment, promotion, or dismissal of faculty, staff or students.
