2 Insurance Studies and internships abroad - A guide for UCN students doing a part of their educational programme abroad. UCN encourages its students to go abroad for a period of studies or internship. Studying abroad has proven to add extra professional and personal competencies and new dimensions to your professional career, but traveling and working abroad in unknown environments has its risks and if your luck runs out you must have adequate insurance coverage to help you in all situations. This guide points to a number of requirements and recommendations to your insurance coverage when you prepare yourself to go for studies or an internship abroad. Some aspects are concerned with the insurance of your own person in case of illness or accident. Other aspects are concerned with your professional responsibility if you work as an intern and cause damage to a patient, a client or a citizen under your professional care. No matter if you go for studies or internship abroad you need to be aware that you must have adequate coverage in relation to: Health insurance (sickness and transportation back home Accidence insurance (damage to yourself) Professional Liability Insurance (e.g. if you cause damage to equipment belonging to others or to persons in your care) this is only relevant in case of internship abroad

3 Under normal circumstances your own standard insurance may not cover all three of the abovementioned areas and therefore you need to take out a separate travel insurance or supplementary insurance. Contact your own insurance company about your options. For all UCN programmes we require that outgoing students have adequate and appropriate insurance coverage, and your international coordinator can ask for documentation for correct and adequate insurance before you receive UCN acceptance to study abroad or go on internship abroad. Health Insurance If you are traveling inside the EU or Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein you need to acquire the blue EU health insurance card from the municipality in order to get the same rights and benefits as the country s own citizens. However, be aware that it is normal in some European countries that you pay for a visit to the doctor or for being hospitalized. If the local policy is to pay for these benefits, you will have to do so as well. For this reason it may be necessary to supplement with extra health insurance to protect you from self-payment abroad, especially because supplementary insurance can cover your transportation back home so much more important since the blue EU health insurance card does not cover transportation back home in case of sickness. If you travel outside the EU, it is definitely a must to have. See the full EU health insurance coverage described here Accident Insurance Accidents not covered by an insurance policy can have serious consequences for both yourself and for UCN. Consequently it is very important that you take out insurance of the correct

4 type and with adequate coverage before you travel. As a selfgoverned state-financed institution, UCN is not allowed to insure itself or its students. Thus correct insurance is your own responsibility. Professional Liability Insurance - Internships abroad If you go for an internship abroad or if an internship is part of your stay abroad, you will, on top of your normal personal insurance, also need an extra insurance which covers professional liability insurance. A professional liability insurance provides coverage f you accidentally cause damage to patients, clients, inventory or equipment. Always make sure to check if the internship organization has a liability insurance, which covers you as a temporary employee. If this is not the case, UCN recommends that you consult with Dr. Walter Insurance Company as they offer affordable prices and adequate coverage. 5 For students at UCN health programmes If you are a student at one of the health programme offered at UCN, you are in a different position you still have to remember to take out ordinary student travel insurance, but the unions and professional associations have made deals with insurance companies which mean that when you become a member of the relevant professional association (for nurses or therapists or midwives or radiographers etc.) you will have access to the association s professional liability insurances while working abroad. You will therefore be automatically covered in professional respects up to one year of being in internships abroad, provided the internship is an integrated part of the programme you follow.
