1 Sarah Welsh, Criminal Justice, Peer Leader Role: Mentor/Connector Learning Area: Professional and Civic Responsibility Goals: The goal of this activity is to begin to educate the students in the art of resume creating. As well as illustrate the harm that can come from a poorly written resume & the benefits of a well-written resume. Steps: Here are the steps for the activity. They do not necessarily need to be in this order instead you can switch things up according to what you think is best. 1. Explain to the students how important a good resume is going to be to them in the upcoming years & ask how much they actually know about resumes. 2. Have the students take some time (around 5 minutes) to list some of their positive attributes. 3. Take the resume Quiz (5-10 minutes depending), and then go over the answers as a group. Asking the students what they thought the answer was & why. If the answer is incorrect explain to them why the answer would be something else. 4. Divide the students up into smaller groups and pass out examples of resumes (both good and bad). Have the students critique them. Give them 5 minutes to discuss and brainstorm. Then have them come back into the big group and discuss what they thought of the resumes (group discussion). 5. Go through the resume slide show. 6. If there is time left, help the students take commonly used words (such as cleaning) and change them into the more appropriate terms for resumes (cleaning goes to sanitation). 7. You should then encourage your students to (even if they dont need it right away) create a resume. So then when they need one all they need to do is simply update it, as opposed to create it. Materials Needed: You are going to need the resume Quiz and answers (Below) Examples of good & bad resumes Resume slide show (Available in hardcopy of Tool Kit in PL Office) Outcomes:
2 The students responded very positively to this activity. Many of the students did not know very much about how or what they would need to compile a strong resume. Many of them expressed how much they learned from the activity, and how helpful it will be in the future. Resume Quiz 1. Given that employers screen resumes for between 2.5 and 20 seconds, a resume should show the employer at a glance what you want to do and what you're good at. What's a good way to sharpen the focus of your resume and provide the reader with this vital information? a. An Objective Statement b. A Summary or Profile Section c. A small, tasteful graphic d. All of the above 2. When describing work experience, paragraph-style job descriptions are preferred over bulleted lists. 3. Should you list your GPA on your resume? a. Yes, if it's above 3.5 b. Not under any circumstances c. Yes, it's always expected d. Yes, if your overall GPA and/or GPA in your major is over Within your professional history, the most important element to highlight is: a. Duties and responsibilities from past jobs b. Skills c. Names of supervisors d. Accomplishments 5. When listing your Education, list in this order: a. Name of college, city/state of college, major, graduation date, degree name b. Name of degree in name of major, name of college, city/state of college, graduation date
3 c. Name of college, name of major, GPA, name of minor, span of dates of attendance d. Dates of attendance, name of college, degree name, GPA, major 6. It's perfectly acceptable to use personal pronouns (I, me, my) on a resume. 7. When listing your job history, list in this order: a. Dates of employment first, followed by name of employer, city/state of employer, title/position b. Name of employer first, followed by city/state of employer, title/position dates of employment c. Name of employer first, followed by street address and phone number of employer, supervisor's name, position/title, reason for leaving, salary d. Title/position first, followed by name of employer, city/state of employer, dates of employment 8. What types of words are most important to include in your resume? a. Action verbs and job-specific keywords b. Colorful adjectives that describe you as a person c. Multi-syllabic words that make you sound sophisticated d. As much use as possible of the verb "to be" 9. Students with very little experience, especially minimal experience in their chosen field, should consider this resume technique: a. Skillful exploitation of transferable and applicable skills b. Use of a chrono-functional resume c. Descriptions of class projects and coursework that are relevant to the chosen field d. All of the above 10. Unpaid experience, such as you may have gained from internships, sports, volunteer work and extracurricular activities, should be: a. separated from paid experience b. left off your resume altogether c. incorporated with your paid experience
4 d. listed only on page 2 of your resume 11. Students who have or are pursuing a four-year degree and also have an associate's degree from a community college should include the associate's degree on their resumes. 12. It's important to list references on a resume. 13. Students who belong to a greek organization should be sure to mention their fraternity or sorority by name on their resumes. 14. You should list hobbies and interests on your resume to make you more "human." 15. You should be sure to list your high-school education on your resume. 16. Knowing that a prospective employer might try to reach you in your dorm room after you've sent out your resume, what kind of greeting should you have on your answering machine or voic ? a. A humorous greeting that enables the employer to see what a fun person you are b. A musical greeting that gives the employer a glimpse into your cultural tastes c. A greeting in which your roommate and several other people who live on your floor chime in so the employer can see how personable and popular you are d.
