2 Phoenix House Leadership in California Eldridge Ave., Lake View Terrace, CA Tel: Fax: Phoenix House has served communities in California since 1979, helping thousands of individuals to overcome the problems associated with drug and alcohol abuse and go on to lead healthy, productive and rewarding lives. Over 2,000 adults and teenagers receive treatment each day through more than twenty programs in Southern and Central California. Pouria Abbassi, P.E. Senior Vice President and Regional Director of Phoenix Houses of California Mr. Abbassi joined Phoenix House in June 2012 after a successful executive career in hospitality, sports and entertainment industry at the Los Angeles Convention Center (LACC). As the CEO of LACC since 2006, Mr. Abbassi developed and implemented a strategic business plan, built upon three pillars of community, business and environment, to significantly enhance the performance output of the organization. Under his leadership, LACC achieved unprecedented results unmatched in the nation. Chief among these results were that after over three decades of operational fiscal deficit, the LACC was among the very few convention centers nationwide to attain fiscal solvency for six consecutive years. It was also the first convention center of its size and age to achieve LEED-EB Gold certification. Under his direction LACC also become a model of corporate social responsibility through its services, reach and engagement with various communities in Los Angeles. Mr. Abbassi was one of the key executives involved in the various components of the $1.5 billion LACC modernization and 70,000 plus seats stadium project. Prior to joining the LACC, Pouria led teams in project engineering, debt financing, financial modeling, environmental analysis and information technology implementation. A registered professional mechanical engineer in the State of California and a graduate of UCLA School of Engineering and Anderson School of Management/Executive Management Program, Mr. Abbassi has published in the areas of cryogenics engineering and high temperature superconductivity and is a recipient of over 30 research, business and performance awards. The unique diversity and expanse of his background has allowed Pouria to methodically approach business opportunities and management challenges through leading teams with innovative action plans and specific targeted outcomes. A firm believer in youth nourishment and education, Pouria frequently gives presentations on leadership and visioning to student groups ranging from elementary school through graduate school and mentors young professionals in their careers. 1
3 Elizabeth A. Stanley-Salazar, M.P.H. Vice President, Director of Clinical Services Upon joining Phoenix House in September 1994, Ms. Stanley-Salazar served as the Vice President and Regional Director. In November 2001, she was named Vice President and Director of Public Policy and in 2005 she also took on the responsibility of Director of the Lake View Terrace facility. In October 2011, she assumed responsibility for all Clinical Services within the Region. Prior to joining Phoenix House, Ms. Stanley Salazar served as Chief Deputy Director for the California State Department of Alcohol and Drug Programs; Alcohol and Drug Program Administrator for Monterey County Health Department; and Vice President/Administrator for Behavioral Health Services. Ms. Stanley-Salazar has a B.S. in Nursing from San Jose State University and an M.P.H. from UCLA. Elena Ksendzov Vice President, Director of Finance Elena Ksendzov joined Phoenix House in April of Prior to her transition, Ms. Ksendzov worked as Chief Financial Officer at YMCA of the Foothills, where she integrated financial reporting systems with membership services and created comprehensive financial and statistical program evaluation tools. Previously, Ms. Ksendzov managed the financial operations of Jewish Family Service of Los Angeles, first as Finance Director and later as Chief Financial Officer. During her tenure at JFSLA, Ms. Ksendzov streamlined government grant financial data systems, helped the agency expand its emergency and transitional shelter services for the homeless and victims of domestic violence through a tri-fold increase in government funding, and implemented several system upgrades. Ms. Ksendzov holds a BA degree from St. Petersburg University in Russia and an MBA degree from New York University s Stern Graduate Business School. She is also a certified trainer for YMCA of the USA Leadership Development Center, teaching courses in Financial Management and Volunteerism designed for emerging Y leaders. Aracely Mayoral, Controller Ms. Mayoral joined Phoenix House as Senior Accountant for the California region in September In January, 2008 Ms. Mayoral was promoted to Regional Controller. Prior to joining Phoenix House, Ms. Mayoral worked as a Senior Accountant for the Los Angeles Daily News. Mr. Mayoral is responsible for managing all aspects of the accounting department. Her duties are to plan, organize, direct and control the accounting functions of the company, including budgeting, contract compliance, financial reporting, audit, purchasing, payables and accounts receivable. As Controller, Ms. Mayoral provides strong leadership in finance related to financial analysis and processes. She functions as a member of the management team in strategic planning and advisory capacities. Ms. Mayoral holds a B.S. in Accounting from the California State University Northridge and a MBA with concentration in Finance from the California Lutheran University. 2
4 Kevin A. Ralph, Vice President, Director of Human Resources & Workforce Development Mr. Ralph joined Phoenix House as Director of Human Resources for California in September He was subsequently promoted to Vice President in December Prior to joining Phoenix House, he served as Senior Human Resources Representative for the Los Angeles Unified School District where he oversaw the employee relations concerns for several Local (community) Districts within their Maintenance and Operations group. He has also held senior Human Resources positions with Priority Records, LLC and the Vons Companies, Inc. Mr. Ralph has an extensive background in employee/labor relations, training and development, California Labor Law, recruitment and staff development. Mr. Ralph holds a B.A. in English from the University of Southern California, a Certificate in Human Resources Management from California State University, Long Beach, and is certified as a Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR). Earlene Bryson, Vice-President, Administrative Services Ms. Bryson joined Phoenix House in September 1999 providing administrative support to the California Regional Director. Ms. Bryson was promoted to the position of Regional Executive Administrator in December 2000 to manage corporate governance for the region in addition to the administrative functions of the Operations Department. In October 2011 she was promoted to the position of Director of Administrative Services and in June 2014 she became the Vice President of Administrative Services. In this role, Ms. Bryson manages IT services and assists with the management of Property/Construction. She continues to oversee the administrative functions of operations, manage corporate governance, assist with the supervision and training of all regional administrative support staff, and manage the processing of agreements, certifications, and program licenses, for the California region. Ms. Bryson is a graduate of Sawyer Business College, Evanston, Illinois. Maja Trochimczyk, Ph.D., Senior Director, Planning & Research Dr. Trochimczyk joined Phoenix House in October She oversees all new business development, planning, and proposal writing for Phoenix House s government contracts and awards, including those from federal, state, city, and county agencies. She is also responsible for marketing materials, website updates and social media posts for the California region. Dr. Trochimczyk has 18 years of grant-writing and fund-raising experience at institutions such as the University of Southern California, Catholic Charities, St. Francis Medical Center, The Midnight Mission, and other social service agencies. She holds a Ph.D. from McGill University in Montreal, Canada, and two M.A. degrees from Poland (the University of Warsaw and the F. Chopin University of Music). She authored six books of music history, five books of poetry, and numerous other publications poems, studies, essays, book chapters, dictionary entries, CD liner notes, reviews, and so forth. A member of the American Musicological Society, and the Polish Institute of Arts and Sciences, and a former Poet Laureate of Sunland-Tujunga, Dr. Trochimczyk currently serves on the Board of the Polish American Historical Association that recently honored her with the Distinguished Service Award. 3
5 David M. Richardson, Ph.D..Vice President, Corrections and Rehabilitation Services Dr. Richardson oversees all Phoenix Houses of California s in-custody treatment programs for adults and adolescents. His long and highly successful career in health care leadership includes graduate medical education (Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science), correctional health care (Prison Health Service) behavioral healthcare management (Sunshine Health Center), managed health care operations (Kaiser Foundation Hospitals) and consultancy with community based agencies (Secure Treatment and Evaluation Program Services). Most recently, David was principal consultant with Dr. David M. Richardson and Associates, a West Coast firm. In addition to health care management expertise Dr. Richardson has specialized training in conflict and alternative dispute resolution. Embedded as an organizational Ombudsman he worked with physicians and their patients to resolve disputes related to health care and adverse outcomes while at Kaiser Permanente. A true advocate for children, David has published a book on dating written for teen age boys, The Play Book: 101 Things Every Player Should Know About Dating, Girls & Relationships (2011), a companion book for girls is in the works, The Script: 101 Things Every Princess Should Know About Dating, Frogs & Relationships (In Press). Dr. Richardson earned a Bachelor degree in Psychology from Georgia State University and a Doctorate in Counseling from International University, Harmony College of Science. He holds the following certifications: Certified Organizational Ombudsman Practitioner, International Ombudsman Association; Certified Correctional Health Professional, National Commission on Correctional Health Care; Certified Mental Health Administrator, Association of Mental Health Administrators; and Diplomat - American College of Health Care Executives. Farid Rasekhi, Director, Property and Construction Mr. Rasekhi joined Phoenix Houses of California in 1996 as the director of properties, construction and maintenance. Mr. Farid holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from San Diego State University and a Master in Business Administrations from National University. Prior to joining Phoenix House, Mr. Rasekhi was a project manager for MBM Construction and Management. Mr. Rasekhi is responsible for obtaining plans, permits and approvals from city government agencies as well as supervising work in progress to ensure building code are in compliance. Akilah Templeton, MPA, LMSW, Program Director, Phoenix House Venice Akilah Templeton has worked in the addiction treatment field for 20 years. Before joining Phoenix House Residential Program and Outpatient Services in Venice, California as Program Director, Akilah worked for the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health and The Ventura County Department of Behavioral Health. She brings extensive experience providing direct services to clients with co-occurring disorders to our organization. Akilah has a Master s degree in Public Administration from California State University, Northridge as well as a Master s degree in Social Work from the University of Southern California. 4
6 Paula Rice Sherman, M.Sc., CAS, Director, Orange County Adult Services Paula Rice-Sherman, MS, CAS, Program Director of Adult Services Orange County joined Phoenix House in Prior to joining Phoenix House Ms Rice-Sherman was the Executive Director of The Promises Foundation ( ) a non-profit organization specializing in substance abusing women and their children. Preceding this, Ms. Rice-Sherman was the Program Director of the Walden House ( ) FOTEP program in El Monte and helped develop and was responsible for the implementation of a SAMHSA pregnant and Post-Partum Women s grant and a Father s Case Management grant. Prior to that Ms. Rice-Sherman was with Mental Health Systems and the implementing Program Director ( ) for the Region IV SASCA. Around the same time, she worked for the Chapman House, Inc. where she oversaw the organization and implementation of contracts, policies and procedures and was responsible for obtaining their CARF Accreditation. Ms. Rice-Sherman is a Certified Addictions Specialist by the American Academy of Healthcare Providers and a Certified Trainer for Motivational Interviewing. She holds a Bachelor s Degree in Psychology from Antioch University and a M.Sc in Leadership and Management from the University of LaVerne. Scott VanCamp, LMFT, Regional Director, Special Projects Mr. Van Camp initiated the Phoenix House Wraparound Program after joining Phoenix House California in Mr. Van Camp is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist who began his career as a helping professional 25 years ago. During this time he has worked in many capacities including: residential direct care provider, group home manager, program coordinator, program director, clinician, private sector therapist and university professor. Mr. Van Camp is currently the Regional Director of Special Projects in California and a National Clinical Trainer for Phoenix House Foundation. When not working in the human services field, Mr. Van Camp is an artist, musician, and life-long motorcycle enthusiast. Carole-Ann Scott, MA, Director Orange County Behavioral Health Intervention & Support Services Ms. Scott joined Phoenix House in December 2009 as Deputy Director of Mental Health & Family Services at the Lake View Terrace adolescent residential facility. In May 2012 she became Supervising Clinical Specialist for two of the male units at LVT, overseeing the treatment of 70 young men and managing a dedicated staff of twenty-five. In 2013 Ms. Scott became Program Director for a new and innovative program, Behavioral Health Intervention & Support Services in Orange County, funded by OC Health Care Agency, Behavioral Health Services, PEI, MHSA/Prop 63. Prior to joining Phoenix House Ms. Scott was founder and Executive Director of Imagine Academy, a 6-12th grade charter school in the San Fernando Valley and Director of Poseidon School, a non-public school serving students from LAUSD. She holds a BA in Psychology, summa cum laude, from Hunter College, CUNY and a MA in Clinical Psychology from Antioch University. Outside of the work world Ms. Scott is a musician, an avid reader, and the extraordinarily proud mother of three young adults. 5
7 Frank Sanchez, Ph.D. LMFT, Program Director, Phoenix House Academy of Los Angeles Frank Sanchez, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, serves as the Program Director for the Phoenix House Academy at Lake View Terrace. He works with teens from ages and oversees a multitude of counselors, providing recommendations, mentoring, enacting behavioral health, and serving evidence-based practices. He previously directed Mental Health Services at the Academy. Mr. Sanchez has over 10 years of experience working with various agencies in a clinical work environment. He began as a Marriage and Family Therapist Trainee for the AIDS Project Los Angeles. At La Shanti/Being Alive he was given the opportunity to offer counseling to individuals, couples and families, in addition to writing treatment plans, assessing clients, and strengthening psychodynamic knowledge. Soon afterwards, he joined the Tarzana Treatment Center, and referenced the Addiction Severity Index from the DSM-IV to evaluate and diagnose detox patients. He met with groups and individuals for psychotherapy, conducted training on addition and psychological issues. He has worked with individuals of varying ethnicities, sexual orientations, and ages. Mr. Sanchez has professional affiliations and is an active member of both the American Psychological Association and the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists. Training undergone by him includes Human Development Training, Extensive Domestic Violence Training, and Extensive HIV and Aids Training. 6
