1 Year 4 Home Learning - Mr Massey s Literacy - Week beginning 8th February ( yearfour@owlerbrook.sheffield.sch.uk ) Monday - Skill - To plan a recount. By the end of this week, you will have written your recount about the Roman Invasion of Britain. Today we will collect our ideas and plan how we will write our recount. Please complete the boxes below and on the next page. I have given brief explanations or examples for each box to help you. The example words are in green. Interesting adjectives: mighty Roman Empire Time connectives: First, after that Past tense verbs: Doing words which tells us something happened in the past. invaded, fought Facts and sentences for paragraph 1: In this section I would like you to write the facts and example sentences you can use for your first paragraph. Your first paragraph will be about the three times the Romans tried to invade Britain. The first two where Julius Caesar failed, and the third where Emperor Claudius succeeded. I have included my recount at the end of the pack if you need some facts. In 55 BC, clever Julius Caesar decided the Romans would invade Britain.

2 Monday Continued. Facts and sentences for paragraph 2: This paragraph will be about Queen Boudicca and the Iceni tribe rebelling, but failing, and Governor Agricola invading the north of England. Example: Queen Boudicca was defeated in 61 AD. Facts and sentences for paragraph 3: This paragraph will be about Agricola s invasion of Scotland. You will also need to write about Agricola going back to Rome and the Romans retreating from Scotland. Example: The Romans built many forts in Scotland. Facts and sentences for paragraph 4: You will need to write about the Picts in Scotland attacking the Romans in England. Then how the Roman s built Hadrian s Wall, and then how the Romans finally left Britain. Example: The Picts attacked in 105 AD.

3 Tuesday Skill - To write a recount - PART 1 Use your plan to help you write the first 2 paragraphs of your recount. The first paragraph will be about the three times the Romans tried to invade Britain. The first two where Julius Caesar failed, and the third where Emperor Claudius succeeded. The second paragraph will be about Queen Boudicca and the Iceni tribe rebelling, but failing, and Governor Agricola invading the north of England. You will need to include the following skills. I have included examples with each: - Complex sentences - Julius Caesar wanted to invade Britain, because its good soil would be great for farming. - Interesting adjectives - Impressive Emperor Claudius successfully led his massive army in their successful invasion of Britain. - Facts - A Roman legion was a group of 4,000 to 6,000 soldiers. - Writing in the third person - Julius Caesar first invaded Britain in 55 BC. - Writing in the past tense - The British tribes fought back against the Roman army. - Time connectives - After Julius Caesar, Emperor Claudius succeeded in invading Britain. If you are struggling, please look at Mr Massey s recount at the end of the pack for ideas and inspiration. Try not to copy it word for word.

4 Wednesday Skill - To write a recount - PART 2 Use your plan to help you write the last 2 paragraphs of your recount. The third paragraph will be about Agricola s invasion of Scotland. You will also need to write about Agricola going back to Rome and the Romans retreating from Scotland. The fourth paragraph will be about the Picts in Scotland attacking the Romans in England. Then how the Roman s built Hadrian s Wall, and then how the Romans finally left Britain. You will need to include the following skills. I have included examples with each: - Complex sentences - The Picts attacked the Romans, even though they had a large army and many forts. - Interesting adjectives - Powerful Agricola kept invading more and more of Britain. - Facts - It took 6 years to build Hadrian s Wall. - Writing in the third person - Agricola was called back to Rome, so he left Britain. - Writing in the past tense - The Romans abandoned their Scottish fortresses. - Time connectives - Finally, the Romans left Britain in 410 AD. If you are struggling, please look at Mr Massey s recount at the end of the pack for ideas and inspiration. Try not to copy it word for word.

5 Thursday. Skill - To edit a recount. Now that you ve written your recount, I want you to edit and improve it. Task 1: Ask an adult or a brother or sister in your home to read your recount. Then ask them for warm and cool feedback. Remember, warm feedback is when someone tells you what they really like about your work, with an example. Cool feedback is where someone points out a part of your work which is good, but could be better. If they can, they give you a clue about how you could improve it. I have put 2 examples below: Task 2: Can you use your cool feedback to improve your work? Use a different coloured pencil to make your changes. Task 3: Can you go back through your recount and improve 5 spellings? Look for any words you are unsure of, and either ask an adult to check them, use a dictionary if you have one, or with an adults helps, use a computer to check the spelling is correct. Use a different coloured pencil for your corrections. Task 4: Go back and check you ve put your capital letters, full stops and commas in the right place. Task 5: Add 3 more interesting adjectives to your recount. Task 6: Add 3 more time connectives to your recount. Task 7: Can change 2 of your simple sentences into complex sentences? Remember that you ll need subordinating conjunctions like because, even though and although. Task 8: Make any other improvements you notice. Perhaps you need more facts?

6 Friday. Skill - To publish a recount. Now that you have planned, written and edited your recount, it s time for you to write up the finished thing in your neatest handwriting. Make sure you include ALL the edits you made with a coloured pencil, and that you have used the advice given in your cool feedback. If you like, you can add some pictures to the end of your recount, either showing the Roman army, the British tribes, or maybe even Hadrian s Wall. Please write your published recount in your book. It can be as many pages long as you like. Please either drop your work off at school when your parents next go to pick up a pack, or instead you can get your parents to take a picture of the finished work and it to yearfour@owlerbrook.sheffield.sch.uk I will send the neatest and most interesting recount to Mrs Oldham for her online celebration assembly which goes on the school website every Friday morning.

7 Mr Massey s recount. In 55 BC, Roman Emperor Julius Caesar decided that the Romans would invade Britain. He took 2 legions in boats across the sea to Britain. Each legion has 4,000 to 6,000 soldiers. His first attempt failed, so in 54 BC Julius Caesar attempted to invade Britain again. This time he brought 5 legions and 2,000 cavalrymen. The invasion was not successful, but the British tribes agreed to give the Romans money if they were left in peace. Almost 100 years later in 43 AD, the Roman Empire tried to invade Britain a third time. This new invasion was led by the new Emperor, Claudius. With his 20,000 soldiers, he quickly defeated many of the tribes and most of the people in Britain agreed to live under Roman rule. Emperor Claudius left Britain, but left a Roman Governor in charge. However, in 60 AD many British tribes tried to fight back against the Romans in Britain. One of the main tribes was The Iceni, who were led by a woman called Queen Boudicca. They wanted their lands back and did not like the way the Romans treated the British people. Queen Boudicca and her army had many victories, but she was eventually defeated in 61 AD. She poisoned herself so she could not be captured. After this the Romans decided to invade the north of England and under the command of the new governor Agricola, the Romans took control of York, Chester and Caerleon. From 78 to 84 AD, Agricola moved further north and tried to conquer the lands of Scotland. Many of the tribes fought back, but eventually the Romans were able to build forts throughout Scotland. In 84 AD, General Agricola was called back to the Roman Empire, and left Britain. Many of his fortresses in Scotland were abandoned and eventually dismantled. The Romans decided to fully retreat from Scotland, back to England. For many years after this, Roman Britain lived in peace. However, in 105 AD, the Romans came under attack from tribes in Scotland called the Picts. So in 122 AD, the Roman Emperor of the time, Hadrian, ordered a wall to be built in the north of England to protect them from the Picts. It took 6 years to be built and was known as Hadrian s Wall. Parts of it can still be seen today. Almost 300 years later in 410AD, the Romans left Britain and told the British people that they had to look after themselves.
