Applicants are encouraged to contact Nursing & Health Care should they wish to discuss any issues before applying. c) Nursing & Health Care welcomes applications from mature applicants, providing they meet minimum entry requirements. d) Applicants are not considered on the basis of sex or sexual orientation. 6 Appeal Grades Nursing & Health Care will consider appealed grades subject to them meeting the minimum entry requirements and confirmed in time to be administered for entry that academic session. Graduates Applicants with a first degree within the last 5 years can apply for admission. However, if the degree does not include Chemistry and Biology, these must be obtained at high school level (Highers or A Level) within the last five years before applying for admission. A minimum of grade B is required in both subjects. Applicants returning to higher education All applicants require the equivalent of 5 Scottish Higher grades (AABBB) or 3 A levels (ABB) but applicants returning to higher education may be offered a conditional place on the completion of their current course if it could enable the applicant to upgrade their previous educational qualifications. eg. applicants studying a science or nursing course, or the Scottish Wider Access Health Programme (SWAP) at Glasgow Kelvin College. The only Access programmes that meet our minimum entry requirements are: University of Glasgow Access to Nursing Course. This part-time course is run over 26 weeks where applicants study Chemistry and Biology (3 hours/week/subject). Information is available at: Access to Medicine, or Access to Nursing, at Glasgow Kelvin College however, applicants undertaking the Access to Nursing Course also require to have one science higher at Grade B to meet our minimum entry requirements. International Applications A number of overseas countries have their own educational systems. Information from UCAS is used to guide the Admissions Officer and advice sought from the Recruitment and International Office. The equivalent qualifications to Scottish Higher grades or A Levels are needed from an accredited educational establishment. It is important to consider level of study in the different countries and what would be acceptable as university entry requirements in the respective countries. Applicants must have completed full secondary education in their country of origin. eg. in a number of African countries pupils leave school only with O levels or GCSE levels. Their secondary school leaving certificate should equate to SQA Higher grades or GCE A level grades. Academic achievements of applicants outside the UK will be considered on an individual basis, in addition to the UCAS personal statement and reference. International applicants must enter their name on their UCAS application form exactly as stated on their passport. 6

English Language Applicants whose first language is not English and/or if they do not possess a GCSE or Standard Grade pass in English, must achieve a minimum score in IELTS of 7.0 (with no subtest less than 7.0) as required by the Health Boards for working in the clinical areas and for professional registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council. English Language requirement for non-eu applicants: Please note that the UK Border Agency has introduced new rules with regards to the completion of language tests as a condition of entry to the UK. The rules identify the following countries as majority English speaking countries: Antigua and Barbuda Australia The Bahamas Barbados Belize Canada Dominica Grenada Guyana Jamaica New Zealand St Kitts and Nevis St Lucia St Vincent and the Grenadines Trinidad and Tobago United States of America Applicant nationals from any country OTHER than the above must have completed a relevant language test at level B2 as a condition of entry to the UK. For further details see: Applicants who have attended an English speaking school, college or university within their own country, or have attained an A Level, International Baccalaureate (IB), or equivalent from a UK education authority, must also complete an English language test within the last 2 years that meets both the UKBA and the University of Glasgow minimum requirements. The only exception to the above is if you have attended an educational institution within the UK or one of the above countries for a period of 2 or more years, and the course at that institution has been taught in English. Whilst the UKBA sets a minimum level of language requirements of B2, which must be met in order to obtain a visa to study at degree level, the University of Glasgow 7

requires a higher level. The required levels for IELTS or TOEFL, which are the most commonly used tests are as follows: IELTS of 7.0 (with no subtest less than 7.0) ibtoefl 100 (with no subtest less than 24) Transfers Applications from applicants, who have commenced a degree programme other than nursing, can apply through UCAS and have their application considered, providing they meet the minimum entry requirements. Those candidates who are studying nursing at another institution, or who previously commenced a nursing degree, may request a transfer under exceptional circumstances but must meet our minimum entry requirements. They must provide: A covering letter outlining exceptional circumstances A list of educational qualifications achieved to date An official copy of their transcript of theory and practical content achieved and grades of assessment A reference from the institution An interview will be required and the year of entry will depend on the clinical and academic experience obtained. Applications for transfer under exceptional circumstances must be received by the Admissions Administrator by 15 th January for consideration for entry in September of that year. Access Courses Applicants on recognised access courses (University of Glasgow and Glasgow Kelvin College) will be considered for entry on an individual basis upon application Unsuccessful Applicants Unsuccessful applicants may wish to apply for the BN course in future years. All applicants who meet the academic entry requirements will be considered. ii. INTERVIEW Before an offer is made, applicants who meet the minimum entry requirements may be invited for an interview. Interviews are held within the Wolfson Medical School Building or the Nursing & Health Care School and take place from January until March and are normally conducted by one academic member of staff, one clinical NHS representative and/or senior nursing student. Offers are normally made by late March/early April each year. Please note that meeting minimum entry requirements does not guarantee an interview. 8

Any experience of caring for individuals, either paid or voluntary, should be included in your personal statement in the first instance. Applicants may be assessed against some, or all, of the following criteria: Ø Independent thought and motivation Ø Expectation of and enthusiasm for a nursing career Ø Understanding of current issues Ø The nursing curriculum Ø Communication skills Ø Work experience/experience in caring for individuals Ø Their ability to recognise caring attributes Ø Evidence of team working, ability to get on with people Applicants should respond promptly to the Nursing & Health Care invitation for interview. Any applicant who cannot attend an interview should notify Nursing & Health Care immediately. Applicants who do not attend their interview, and have not notified the Nursing & Health Care School prior to the interview time, will not be considered further. Applicants will be asked to briefly discuss why they have chosen to apply to undertake nursing and what experience they have gained in caring for people. The BN Admissions Committee has members who are Nursing and Health Care staff, Clinicians and senior Nursing students. All members are updated on the admissions process and undertake Equality & Diversity training. Interviews are not normally rescheduled unless the applicant is unable to attend through ill health. There may be a degree of flexibility for international (non EU) interviewees, who may be offered a telephone interview. Applicants with a criminal record should bring with them to interview a written statement of the event and any supporting evidence. 4 DISABILITY AND HEALTH a) Nursing & Health Care welcomes applications from individuals with disabilities. Support is available to prospective and registered students from the University s Disability Service. A disability need not be a barrier to becoming a nurse if the student can fulfil the rigorous demands of professional Fitness to Practise as a registered nurse. Disclosure of a disability will enable Nursing & Health Care to offer advice and support where necessary. b) Applicants must consider the implications of their disability or health issues for a future nursing career before applying and are advised to contact the 9

Admissions Officer at Nursing & Health Care in the first instance to discuss the issues in greater depth. ( ) c) Applicants are expected to disclose a medical condition, mental health difficulty, dyslexia, or a physical, mobility, visual or hearing impairment. This can be noted on the UCAS application form, or applicants may wish to contact Nursing & Health Care directly. graham.macintosh@glasgow.ac.uk d) Applicants who have disclosed a disability or health problem on application are considered for admission on the same criteria and principles as for other applicants. However, due to the physical and emotional demands of the nursing course and profession, a decision on entry to Nursing may need to take into account any overriding health and safety concerns, barriers relating to professional requirements or the University s ability to make necessary adjustments. A meeting may be required with the applicant to discuss issues regarding disability and health to determine if modifications or additional support are required. Discussion with/assessment from the University Disability Service and/or Occupational Health Adviser/relevant health professional, may be required. e) Should a place be offered and accepted, a referral will be made to the appropriate support service(s), who will liaise with Nursing & Health Care as necessary in an attempt to assist the individual and their needs. 5. HEPATITIS B AND HEALTH SCREENING a) Confirmation of Hepatitis B Surface Antigen negative status is identified by the University s Occupational Health Unit s compulsory screening programme, prior to admission. No student will be admitted without having this blood test. b) Identification of Hepatitis B in a potential student will not preclude registration to BN. However, a meeting may take place with the student and a member of the Nursing & Health Care School staff to discuss whether modification would be necessary within the undergraduate course. c) Students must complete a full course of immunisation against the Hepatitis B virus. The immunisation process can take up to nine months and applicants are therefore advised to commence this process at the earliest possible opportunity. However, it is not a requirement for students to have completed the immunisation process prior to admission. Please note that your GP is NOT under obligation to immunise you. d) Nursing students can complete the full course of Hepatitis B immunisation by attending the University s Occupational Health Unit. This can only be done once they are registered as a student. The immunisation process must be completed by the end of the first year of the course. A candidate who has not satisfactorily completed their Hepatitis B immunisation will not be permitted 10

to register and attend classes in the following session until such time as this has been satisfactorily completed. 6. CRIMINAL CONVICTIONS/CAUTIONS a) Previous or recent criminal convictions and cautions must be made known to Nursing & Health Care through the UCAS form or by contacting the Admissions Office directly before the closing date of application ( Applicants must declare any criminal convictions or cautions issued after the UCAS application form has been submitted as soon as these are known by the applicant. b) A satisfactory Disclosure report from the relevant Disclosure Bureau is required of applicants prior to registration on the BN programme. Applicants must check the relevant bureau s website for updated information on disclosure applications. c) Protecting Vulnerable Groups Scheme (PVG) Disclosure Scotland will deal primarily with PVG scheme membership applications for people who: Ø are new to regulated work with vulnerable groups; Ø have changed posts or, Ø have had some other change of circumstances requiring confirmation of scheme membership. Information held by Disclosure Scotland on scheme records relating to PVG Scheme members is simply a collation of vetting information already held on police computers. It is not new information and will be held simply to speed up and improve upon the disclosure process for people who work with vulnerable groups and to ensure that those who have regular contact with children and protected adults through work do not have a known history of harmful behaviour. Disclosure Scotland will continuously update the records they hold about PVG Scheme members so that any new vetting information (eg convictions) will be added to their record as it becomes available. This will ensure that new information indicating that Scheme members might have become unsuitable can be acted upon promptly. PVG Scheme members will no longer have to complete an application form every time a disclosure check is required. Each member will be allocated a unique ID number, which will last a lifetime and can be used for multiple organisations, and will end when membership is no longer required. d) The information provided will have no influence on the consideration of the applicant s academic and professional aptitudes demonstrated within the UCAS application form. Normally a decision on admission will be withheld 11

from UCAS and the applicant until a decision regarding the conviction(s)/caution(s) have been made. e) Should a criminal conviction or caution (or equivalent) be held by an applicant, the applicant is required to provide an explanatory letter for the consideration of the appropriate members of University and Health Board staff. Further documentation may be requested. f) It should be noted that applicants who have obtained admission after consideration of a criminal conviction or caution by Nursing & Health Care will be required to declare their conviction/caution to the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) on graduating. Any decision of the NMC regarding criminal convictions or cautions is independent of any decision made by Nursing & Health Care. Applicants who have criminal convictions or cautions are encouraged to contact the NMC at as early a stage as possible regarding future registration. The University will not be held responsible should an applicant with a declared criminal conviction or caution be admitted to the BN and subsequently refused registration by the NMC following graduation. g) If a conviction or caution is made known to the Admissions Office after an offer has been made, the offer may be withdrawn by the University if deemed appropriate. 7. FEE STATUS a) The Fee Status section of the UCAS form must be completed. The definition of an international student can be obtained from the following website and SAAS can advise UK domiciled students further. Nursing & Health Care may require additional information from applicants during the admissions process. b) Completion of Fee Status Enquiry forms may be required in cases where applicants have resided outside the UK/EU. Applicants who are unsure of their fee status can complete a Fee Status Enquiry Form prior to applying for admissions. The Fee Status Enquiry Form can be obtained from: The form will be returned to the International Admissions Assistant for determination of Home or International status. Nursing & Health Care upholds decisions made by the International and Postgraduate Service in relation to fee status. 8. BN ADMISSIONS ADMINISTRATIVE PROCEDURES a) UCAS All applicants must apply through UCAS. Initial offers will be made through UCAS, followed by further details directly from Nursing & Health Care. 12
