1 2016 DES SUMMER INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES Searching for a dynamic, educational and fun-filled summer? Take a look at the summer intern positions available at the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services. We have a variety of internships available in many of our programs and the experience will last a lifetime! INTERNSHIPS ACCOUNTING CLERK CLERK II (LG 5) STREAM DATA SURVEYOR INTERNS (4 Positions Available) ENV. TECHNICIAN II (LG 12) GENERAL DUTIES Assist staff with all day-to-day accounting functions as well as year-end closing and budgets. The selected candidate should have experience with Excel Spread sheets. The selected candidate will gain valuable experience with accounts payable, accounts receivable, filing, reconciling, and audit preparation. These four positions will be responsible for conducting stream crossing assessments in south central, southwest and the south-east coastal watershed sections of New Hampshire. This will benefit DES and DOT to identify the most problematic crossings for potential replacement of culvert replacing and upsizing to proper capacity. Fish & Game will also benefit from these surveys to identify stream crossings that cannot provide adequate fish passage. The selected candidates will learn valuable field work, compilation, organization and reporting of environmental data using established protocols and techniques. Further the interns will see how the data will be used in real world situations. The selected candidates must possess a valid driver s license and have a good driver s record. PUBLIC INFORMATION OFFICE ASSISTANT This position will assist with public relation efforts including writing of press releases, writing articles, contributing to newsletters, press releases and other publications. This position will also assist with social media, website development, environmental education and outreach activities. Assist staff with serving customers needs in publication sales, file reviews and customer improvement initiatives as needed. The selected candidate will learn what it s like to work in a busy and large state agency, and will learn first-hand how to keep critical elements of our business practices current. This position will allow the intern to learn real world experience in communications and public/media relations. The intern will leave DES having built a professional portfolio of articles they have written for publication in various newsletters.

2 PERMITTING INTERN ENV. TECH. I (LG 9) This position will assist the Air Resources Division, Permitting and Environmental Health Bureau (PEHB) in developing and implementing permitting programs and educating the public and staff on specific air programs. In addition, this intern will assist in developing the Stationary Source Database on-line permitting system, and in testing new database modules. This position will allow exposure to all aspects of air regulations from regulatory, to permitting and compliance assurance. The intern will have the opportunity to see up close how site inspections are completed, stack testing is done and the ability to visit air monitoring sites throughout the state. AIR COMPLIANCE INTERN DATA CONTROL CLERK I (LG 7) AIR QUALITY INTERN TRANSPORTATION & ENERGY EDUCATION & OUTREACH INTERN This position will assist the Air Resources Division, Compliance Bureau in data collection, developing and implementing compliance programs and educating the public and staff on specific air programs. In addition, this intern will assist in enhancing the Stationary Source Database (SSD) compliance modules, developing reports from the SSD, and in testing new database modules. This position will allow exposure to all aspects of air regulations from regulatory, to permitting and compliance assurance. The intern will have the opportunity to see how air rules/statutes are developed and implemented as well as the enforcement and inspection process. This position will conduct field work and shadow various employees as they conduct inspections and site specific testing throughout the state. This position will work on a modeling project needed to support state obligations under the Federal Regional Haze Rule. This position will monitor data analysis in order to understand current and recent air pollution patterns in New Hampshire. Assist with summaries of air quality reports and summaries. This position will introduce the selected candidate to environmental modeling, monitoring and data handling techniques as well as a broad understanding of air pollution patterns in New Hampshire and across the eastern U.S. The intern will learn how to organize and manage large volumes of data as well as how to analyze it. This position will work inventorying on-line publications and links on the Transportation, Climate & Energy web pages, review other state web pages and propose suggested changes to the NHDES web pages, identify connections to other NHDES programs to link to the Transportation, Climate & Energy web pages, prioritize the materials to be updated or replaced and develop needed content, and develop FAQ s relative to transportation and climate & energy. This position will allow the intern to work with a team of DES staff that are engaged in educational, regulatory and legislative efforts at the local, state, regional and the national level in order to address transportation, climate & energy issues. This work experience will dramatically expand their own experience, so they will have a better understanding of this work to help identify those areas that are of most interest to them when they are looking for work in the future.

3 DRINKING WATER QUALITY INTERNS 3 positions available ENV. TECH. I (LG 9) SMALL QUANTITY GENERATOR PROGRAM ASSISTANT 13 weeks SMALL QUANTITY GENERATOR COMPLIANCE ASSISTANT ENV. TECH. I (LG 9) 13 weeks These three positions will assist with the collection of drinking water samples from private wells, populate data collected by field staff following the collection of water quality samples, monitor and update databases and spread sheets with information collected from water samples and review DES files for sample results pertaining to MtBE for digital upload into a database. The candidates selected for these positions will learn valuable experience collecting and managing data relative to environmental sample collection which will be transferrable to future positions in the private and public sectors. The selected candidates must possess a valid driver s license and have a good driver s record and successfully pass a criminal background check. This position will conduct an estimated 100 to 150 follow-up surveys of Small Quantity Generators (SQG) in Belknap, Carroll, Coos, Grafton, Merrimack and Sullivan counties. The intern will focus on verifying the self-certification documentation submitted by the facility on its SQG self-certification and declaration of compliance form through the survey. The ideal candidate should possess knowledge of the hazardous waste rules, travel throughout the state, researching state files for the submitted forms and a physical inspection of the SQG Facility. A final comprehensive report on the overall survey findings will be required to compare the SQG s submitted documentation to current actual practice. The candidate selected for this position will learn about the Resource Conservation Recovery Act (RCRA) that small businesses are required to understand and comply with, write reports, learn observation, computer, listening, speaking and writing skills and provide a poised, self-assured presence at the sites being visited. The selected candidate must possess a valid driver s license and have a good driver s record and successfully pass a criminal background check. This position will conduct follow-up visits to non-responders and recalcitrant Small Quantity Generators (SQG) facilities state wide to collect the required self-certification forms and/or fees that have not been submitted to the SQG Program and will visit those facilities that appear to be having difficulties with the forms that have been submitted. This intern will be the ambassador for the SQG self-certification program to provide assistance to those delinquent SQG s come into compliance. This candidate should possess excellent people, communication, active listening and negotiation skills. The candidate selected for this position will learn about the Resource Conservation Recovery Act (RCRA) that small businesses are required to understand and comply with, write reports, learn and observe their findings, use computer and writing skills and provide a poised, self-assured presence at the sites being visited. The selected candidate must possess a valid driver s license and have a good driver s record and successfully pass a criminal background check.

4 LAND RESOURCE MANAGEMENT WETLAND INTERNS (2 positions available) ENV. TECH I LG 9 WASTEWATER ENGINEERING CLERK CLERK II (LG 5) LAND RESOURCE MANAGEMENT (LRM) INTERN ENVIRONMENTAL TECH. I (LG 9) These two positions will review wetland delineations, site plans, and erosion sediment control plans of permitted Land Resource Management projects, interact with property owners, contractors, and environmental professionals to evaluate stormwater treatment practices, investigates complaints from the public, performs assigned field inspections of permitted development sites to ensure compliance of permit conditions pertaining to wetlands, surface water and stormwater, documents and measures potential unpermitted impact found at project sites, maintains environmental records and prepares field inspection reports, prepares and enters data into a computer, retrieves, revises, updates and reproduces data as required. The candidates selected for these positions will gain valuable experience in reviewing technical plans such as wetland delineations and site plans and will gain report writing skills and gain field experience in documenting site conditions as well as an increased knowledge in land development regulations that will be of benefit when applying for positions in the public or private sectors. The selected candidates must possess a valid driver s license and have a good driver s record. *These two positions will be located at the Pease International Tradeport located in Portsmouth. This position will be responsible for scanning documents, checking forms and reports for proper coding and accuracy with standardized procedures, filing records, data entry, correspondence, forms and other related documentation and retrieving information upon request. The ideal candidate should be familiar with using standard office equipment such as a computer, scanner and copier. The candidate selected will benefit from working with a diverse group of individuals and gain knowledge of the various programs of the Wastewater Engineering Bureau and will be able to take the experience learned with them should they go to work in an office environment. This position reviews wetland delineations, site plans, and erosion and sediment control plans of permitted LRM projects, interacts with property owners, contractors, and environmental professionals to evaluate the stormwater treatment practices, performs field inspections of permitted development sites to ensure compliance of permit conditions pertaining to wetlands, surface water and storm water, documents and measures potential unpermitted impacts found at project sites, maintains records and prepares field inspection reports and enters data into a computer, retrieves, revises updates and reproduces data as required. The candidate selected for this position will gain valuable experience in reviewing technical plans such as wetland delineations and site plans and will gain report writing skills and gain field experience in documenting site conditions as well as an increased knowledge in land development regulations that will be of benefit when applying for positions in the public or private sectors. The selected candidate must possess a valid driver s license and have a good driver s record.

5 LAND RESOURCE MANAGEMENT (LRM) INSPECTOR ENG. TECHNICIAN I (LG 10) SOURCE WATER PROTECTION INTERN ENV. TECHNICIAN II (LG 12) FRESHWATER BEACH INTERN This position completes field inspections on approved commercial and residential development projects, including routine quality control checks and maintenance of stormwater treatment facilities, performs technical engineering review of development plans, stormwater plans and permit conditions to determine compliance with approved plans, interacts with property owners, managers and contractors to assess maintenance of stormwater treatment facilities and review past maintenance logs, ensures environmental compliance of state laws and regulations pertaining to surface water quality, wetlands and stormwater treatment, compiles field reports, and documents and measures unpermitted impacts found at project sites. Prepares and enters environmental data into a computer, retrieves, revises, updates and reproduces data as required. The candidate selected for this position will gain valuable experience in reviewing technical engineering plans such as site development plans and will gain technical report writing skills and gain field experience in documenting site conditions as well as assessing the engineered design of many types of stormwater treatment practices that will be of benefit when applying for positions in the public or private sectors. The selected candidate must possess a valid driver s license and have a good driver s record. This position will conduct GPS field work to improve inaccurate geographic information (wells/intakes, potential contamination sources, PCSs) that DES staff and the regulated community rely upon. Update GIS or MS Access databases and complete GIS or related work to enhance source protection of public water supplies, assist in community private well testing organization and logistical support, and work on initiatives to collaborate with other programs, including 319 Watershed Programs, summarizing impairment data in water supply watershed, reviewing VRAP/VLAP monitoring data and work on other program initiatives. The candidate selected for this position will strengthen GIS/GPS skill-building, well water sample collection protocols, standards for drinking water, time management/organizational skills, and a better understanding of treatment technology options for well water as well as collecting feedback designing/using survey or other mechanisms during community well testing events. The selected candidate must possess a valid driver s license and have a good driver s record. This position will conduct 168 inspections on a monthly basis of freshwater beaches during the summer months for water quality monitoring, quality control requirements and standard operating procedures, will interact with town officials, the public and the media on problem areas, collect cyanobacteria samples to make sure public beaches are from toxins and are safe for swimmers. The candidate selected for this position will gain valuable experience working with fellow staff in the field as well as in the office, water quality monitoring, database management and data quality control and procedures in conducting fresh water beach inspections. The selected candidate must possess a valid driver s license and have a good driver s record.

6 COASTAL BEACH INTERN BIOMONITORING STREAM BIOLOGIST (2 Positions Available) 1 of the 2 positions may last up to 18 weeks EXOTIC SPECIES PROGRAM INTERN 24 weeks This position will conduct beach inspections of coastal beaches according to the tiered monitoring protocol of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), this position will need to inspect 16 coastal beaches during the summer for a total of 24 inspections each week, five or six coastal beaches are inspected Monday through Thursday. Friday inspections are conducted of those beaches with advisories. The candidate selected for this position will gain valuable experience working with fellow staff in the field as well as in the office, water quality monitoring, database management and achieving goals provided in the BEACH guidance manual and conducting coastal beach inspections to determine if beaches meets state standards. The selected candidate must possess a valid driver s license and have a good driver s record. These two positions will assist the Biomonitoring Program Manager in completing field work including the collection of biological (fish and macroinvertebrates), chemical and physical data from streams and rivers state wide, field work is extensive, includes working under strenuous conditions, and operation of complex and heavy equipment. A 2-4 person field crew is required to complete the necessary sampling. This position will assist the manager through September in completing field work and compiling field data collected throughout the summer months. One of these positions may be considered to work through early fall. The candidates selected for these positions will learn valuable experience about the Federal Clean Water Act and development of water quality analysis and criteria (numeric nutrient and temperature criteria), field experience and biological assessments. The selected candidates must possess a valid driver s license and have a good driver s record and the candidate selected for the 18 week position must successfully pass a criminal background check. This position will include a diverse mix of field, lab and office work related to exotic aquatic plant monitoring, mapping and control in surface waters of New Hampshire, but mostly in lakes and ponds, field work includes working on a variety of boats to perform surveys of exotic aquatic plants and other aquatic life on water bodies in New Hampshire using GPS equipment and underwater cameras and sonar devices. Laboratory work includes performing a variety of bench top analyses for lake and tributary water quality samples, preparing plant samples for identification and preparing herbarium specimens. Office work includes assisting with the preparation of long-term management plans for water bodies with exotic aquatic plants, performing data entry and management tasks, preparing presentations and education materials for outreach activities and some work in GIS to prepare maps for management plans and efforts. The candidate selected for this position will learn valuable experience in a well-rounded mix of field, laboratory and office activities related to freshwater biology and invasive aquatic species mapping and management, will become proficient in field and laboratory sampling related to freshwater biology and invasive aquatic species, perform outreach and education activities, report writing and data entry activities. The selected candidate must possess a valid driver s license and have a good driver s record and successfully pass a criminal background check.

7 EXOTIC AQUATIC SPECIES PROGRAM INTERN VOLUNTEER LAKE ASSESSMENT PROGRAM INTERN This position will include a diverse mix of field, lab and office work related to exotic aquatic plant monitoring, mapping and control in surface waters of New Hampshire, but mostly in lakes and ponds, field work includes working on a variety of boats to perform surveys of exotic aquatic plants and other aquatic life on water bodies in New Hampshire using GPS equipment and underwater cameras and sonar devices. This position will train and audit 500 volunteer monitors on 180 lakes on water quality sampling techniques, interact with volunteers and the public to educate them on lake ecology principles, analyze water quality samples in the Jody Connor Limnology Center for a variety of water quality parameters, perform weekly data quality assurance and quality control checks (QA/QC) and compile and mail monthly date reports to volunteers. The candidate selected for this position will gain training in field and laboratory experience, working with citizen scientists and people of all age groups, learn to evaluate citizen science performance, and analyze water quality samples for multiple parameters and interpret the data by understanding general limnology and lake ecology principles. The selected candidate must possess a valid driver s license and have a good driver s record.

8 PUBLIC POOL & SPA INSPECTOR 14 weeks This position will be responsible for inspecting Public Bathing Facilities (PBF s) and collect water samples in order to ensure compliance with DES rules, interact with pool owners on compliance issues and compiles data into the program database. The candidate selected for this position will be exposed to a wide variety of scientific disciplines (chemistry, microbiology, physics, etc.), field inspections, public/environmental health and safety, water analysis, laboratory procedures, scientific reporting, data management, regulatory compliance, conflict resolution, and effective communication. The unique variety of experiences provided in this position will provide an opportunity to identify areas of interest that might not otherwise have been considered. The selected candidate must possess a valid driver s license and have a good driver s record and successfully pass a criminal background check. The hourly rate for each labor grade (LG) is as follows: LG 4 ($11.24), LG 5 ($11.56), LG 7 ($12.23), LG 9, ($13.17), LG 10 ($13.68), and LG 12 ($14.74). Unless otherwise specified, internship hours are 8:00 am 4:00 pm Monday through Friday.
