Our Science Team Our scientists are experienced and highly qualified Professional status with the world s leading professional bodies Periodic evaluations and assessments throughout the courses Martin Boughtflower Martin is involved in the production and analysis of proficiency testing samples for our UKAS accredited Fapas quality assurance scheme which specialises in food-based test materials. Martin s experience is in traditional methods for qualitative and quantitative analysis of foodbourne pathogens, food spoilage and incidator organisms from foodstuffs. Nicola Brereton Nicola leads the Trace Elements Team and has over 20 years of experience in trace element analysis in a wide range of matrices including food, feed, clinical materials and soils. Her specialism is in ICP-MS and research interests include element bioavailability, speciation and profiling for food authenticity. Paul Brereton Paul is the Coordinator of Agri-Food research and the R&D programme manager in applied research in (bio)analytical chemistry concerned with food and feed. He has published over 70 peer reviewed papers and books on food safety and authenticity and has close links with the food industry, UK public sector, academia and the European Commission. James Donarski James is the Head of Food Authenticity and has a background in analytical chemistry, authenticity determination and small molecule structure elucidation. His current focus is the identification of small molecule targets that can be used to classify commodities and where applicable, the subsequent development of rapid and/or portable tools for their detection. He is the co-author of several food authenticity publications in peer-reviewed journals. Susan MacDonald Susan is one of Fera s mycotoxins experts and Head of UK National Reference Laboratory for Mycotoxins. Her research skills include the development of analytical methods for a range of mycotoxins and matrices, including food and feed samples, research on the fate of mycotoxins during processing, and development of multi mycotoxin methods. Sadat Nawaz Sadat leads the pesticide residues section at Fera after completion of his PhD and postdoctoral studies, Sadat has worked for 20 years in the fields of mycotoxins and pesticide residues. He represents the UK at various EU Reference Laboratories networks and a member of the Analytical Sub-group of the UK Pesticide Residues in Food (PRiF) Committee. He has travelled extensively to Europe, Africa, Asia and South America to provide training and consultancy on pesticides residues analysis and setting up monitoring programmes. 5
6 Emiline Quill Emiline has experience across many areas of microbiology from clinical trials, commercial environmental, water and food testing as well as working at high containment. She is the UKAS Technical Manager for microbiology and manages resources across the team. Gareth Rees Gareth is an Analytical Chemist in Food Authenticity and Traceability with a specialism in the application of stable isotope and trace elements to food traceability and authenticity studies. Gareth is the co-author on a number of publications in peer reviewed journals relating to food authenticity and traceability. Martin Rose Martin is the scientific lead on researching dioxins and other emerging contaminants specialising in the application of analytical chemistry to multi-disciplinary research projects. Past member of the EFSA Panel on Contaminants in the Food Chain (CONTAM) and a member of the EFSA Panel on Food Additives and Nutrient Sources Added to Food (ANS). He has authored and co-authored over 200 peer reviewed journals, books and articles. Monika Sehnalova Monika specialises in the development and optimisation of methods for determination of Fusarium mycotoxins by means of liquid chromatography with mass spectrometric detector (HPLC-MS/MS) and gas chromatography with electron capture detector (GC-ECD). Her professional skills are concerned with method development for analysis of various food and environmental contaminants using LC-MS/MS. Matthew Sharman Matthew is our Veterinary Medicine Residues Expert, Head of UK National Reference Laboratory for Veterinary Medicine Residues and Advisor to the UK Veterinary Residues Committee. His main research skills are in the development of rapid and comprehensive methods for detection methods of chemical residues in food and feed based on mass spectrometry and biosensors. Certification On successful completion of any of our courses you will receive a quality assured certificate on departure. This can be used to provide evidence for compliance and audit as well as adding to your qualification portfolio. All of our courses are accredited by the CPD Certification Service as conforming to universally accepted Continuous Professional Development (CPD) guidelines. Coming Soon Fera and UMIST (University of Manchester) are coming together in partnership to offer units delivered through a blended learning model, consisting of intensive week-long blocks held at Manchester complemented by online teaching support with a final year research project. 8 Food Contaminants Mycotoxins in Foods This course provides training in methods routinely used in the EU for analysis of mycotoxins in food. Advanced Mycotoxins in Foods This course is designed to expand and develop on topics covered in the Mycotoxins in Food course, focusing on method development and testing using LC-MS. Materials and Articles in Contact with Food This course provides training in migration test methods as well as methods of analysis for a number of potential migrants included in EU legislation. Process Contaminants This course provides training in methods routinely used for analysis of process contaminants in food. Authenticity, Origin & Traceability Food Authenticity This course provides training in methods for stable isotope analysis, NMR Spectroscopy and High Resolution LC-MS to detect food adulteration and determine food origin. The course will be delivered through a stimulating mix of seminars, case studies and practical work using state-of-the-art analytical equipment. Environmental Contaminants Pesticide Residues in Foods This course provides training in a portfolio of multi-residue and single residue methods commonly used in the EU for the determination of pesticide residues in fresh produce. Course Duration: 10 Days Veterinary Medicine Residues in Food This course provides training in methods to determine veterinary medicine residues in a wide range of animal products. Course Duration: 10 Days Advanced Detection of Chemical Residues in Food, Focusing on Multi-Residue Techniques This course provides training in a portfolio of multi-residue residue methods commonly used in the EU for the determination of pesticide and veterinary medicine residues in foodstuffs. Course Duration: 10 Days Trace Elements in Foods This course provides training in methods for measuring heavy metals in food, beverages and clinical samples. Course Duration: 3 Days 9
10 Techniques & Methods Training Principles of Liquid Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS) This course provides an insight into the general principles of LC-MS, with a particular emphasis on the different types of ionisation, mass analysers and modes of operation best suited to the analysis of chemical residues and contaminants in food. Principles of Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) This course provides an insight into the general principles of GC-MS, with a particular emphasis on the theory behind gas chromatography and its related techniques. Course Duration: 3-5 Days Food Virology This course provides training in principles and practices of food virology, focussing on the recently developed standardised methods to detect Hepatitis A virus and Norovirus. Loop-mediated Amplification (LAMP)-Based Method for the Detection of Salmonella in Food and Feed This course provides training in the practical skills required for setting up, running and interpreting the results of the LAMP based detection method. Course Duration: 2 Days Traditional Microbiology Methods This course provides training in the practical skills required for setting up, running and interpreting the results of traditional microbiological methods.
