3 Short Bios Lee Epstein Lee Epstein is the Provost Professor of Law and Political Science and the Rader Family Trustee Chair in Law at the University of Southern California. A recipient of twelve grants from the National Science Foundation for her work on law and legal institutions, Epstein has authored or co-authored over 100 articles and essays, as well as 15 books. Her most recent book, The Behavior of Federal Judges, with William M. Landes and Richard A. Posner, was published by Harvard University Press in January Principal Investigator of the National Science Foundation funded project on the U.S. Supreme Court Database. Julio Ruiz-Figueroa Assistant Professor at the Division of Political Studies at Centro de Investigación y Docencia Económicas, A. C. (CIDE), in Mexico City. He received his Ph.D. in Politics from New York University (NYU). Professor Rios-Figueroa's research focuses on comparative political institutions, constitutionalism, law and courts, and Latin American politics. He is co-editor of the volume Courts in Latin America (with Gretchen Helmke). Professor Rios-Figueroa is currently working on a booklength project on institutional design and constitutional interpretation in Latin America. Andrew Martin Andrew D. Martin is the Charles Nagel Chair of Constitutional Law and Political Science at the Washington University School of Law. He currently serves Vice Dean of the School of Law and the Founding Director of the Center for Empirical Research in the Law. He is also Professor of Political Science in Arts & Sciences. He is a principal of the analytics consultancy Principia Empirica LLC. Professor Martin is the principal investigator of a cross-national study that examines decisionmaking in constitutional courts around the globe. He is also a collaborator on The Supreme Court Database project. With his collaborator Kevin M. Quinn (UC Berkeley), Professor Martin developed the Martin-Quinn Scores that are widely used to measure ideology on the U.S. Supreme Court. Current research projects include studies of legislative behavior and roll call vote analysis, the design and change of judicial institutions (with application to the European Court of Justice), and statistical tests of game theoretic models. Currently serving as the Director of the Centre for the Study of Law, Politics and Economics. Catalina Smulovitz Professor of Political Science at the University Torcuato Di Tella in Buenos Aires. She has come to be considered one of the world s leading political scientists, especially in the areas of social accountability, a concept originated by her and Enrique Peruzzotti, and judicial mobilization. Hartmann Professor of Law at Fundação Getúlio Vargas Law School in Rio de Janeiro (FGV Direito Rio). Mr. Hartmann holds an LL.B. and an M.A. in Constitutional Law from the Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul; an LL.M. from Harvard Law School and is currently an S.J.D. candidate at the State University of Rio de Janeiro. He heads the Supreme Court in Numbers project at FGV Direito Rio, which employs data mining and natural language processing to research a database of over 1.5 million Brazilian Supreme Court cases. Fernando Leal Professor of Law at Fundação Getulio Vargas Law School in Rio de Janeiro (FGV Direito Rio). Mr. Leal holds an LL.B., an M.A. and an S.J.D. in Public Law from the State University of Rio de Janeiro,
