The first truly cooperative, Webscale management service for libraries UNCG believes that WorldShare Management Services are the next major advance in library cooperation. The services significantly reduce redundant and duplicative effort across libraries, thereby allowing each library to focus on their unique content and strengths. Tim Bucknall, Assistant Dean of University Libraries and Head of Electronic Resources and Information Technologies, University of North Carolina at Greensboro We are a worldwide library cooperative, owned, governed and sustained by members since Our public purpose is a statement of commitment to each other that we will work together to improve access to the information held in libraries around the globe, and find ways to reduce costs for libraries through collaboration.
The power of worldwide cooperation comes to library management OCLC WorldShare Management Services provide a unified, Web-based environment that streamlines cataloging, acquisitions, license management and circulation efforts while sharing relevant data across traditionally disparate workflows. WorldShare Management Services also connect back-office library activities directly to a powerful discovery tool, making it easier and faster to get resources into the hands of library users. Continuing the mission of the OCLC cooperative Why libraries are switching OCLC s mission is to connect people to knowledge through library cooperation, in order to increase access to the world s information. OCLC has partnered with members over the last decade to deliver a number of Web-based services focused on better discovery and delivery of library collections. Efforts including the syndication of WorldCat data to major search engines, the launch of WorldCat.org and the release of WorldCat Local, have increased the visibility and accessibility of the resources of libraries locally and globally. Now, WorldShare Management Services deliver system-wide efficiencies across back-office functions while providing new ways for libraries to share resources and innovation. With WorldShare Management Services, OCLC is moving routine yet critical library functions including acquisitions, circulation, cataloging and subscription and license management to the Web. Both replacing and standing apart from traditional ILS systems, WorldShare Management Services enable libraries to share infrastructure costs and resources, as well as collaborate in ways that free them from the restrictions of local hardware and software. The top reasons libraries are choosing OCLC WorldShare Management Services: Shared data. Connects the aggregated data of WorldCat, the WorldCat knowledge base, vendor records, local holdings records, publisher data, authority records and more. Entirely Web-based. When you no longer have to purchase hardware and software, or manage updates, you can reallocate your resources to more important projects and tasks. Radically improved workflows. Seamless integration of ordering, receiving and cataloging saves librarians time. Intuitive and streamlined staff interface. Common interface manages all physical and electronic materials. Increased visibility on the Web. OCLC partnerships redirect users from the Web straight to your library. Apps from the OCLC WorldShare Platform. Creation, sharing and use of new applications will enhance your staff and patron experience. OCLC WorldShare Management Services: In libraries now. Ready for your library today.
RESULTS: The best part for me as a librarian is that WorldShare Management Services have made it possible for us to streamline processes to get books on shelves and into students hands. What used to take a couple of days to accomplish can now be done in a couple of hours. WorldShare Management Services work like they were built with libraries and librarians in mind. Dr. Lynn futch, Dean for Library Services, Ogeechee Technical College OCLC WorldShare Circulation: a single and easy-to-use interface. RESULTS: In terms of technical services, what WorldShare Management Services provide is our ability to update records right in WorldCat, add our local holdings and we re done. We don t export records. We don t worry about authority control. We don t have to keep our holdings in sync. All of that s gone now! That is probably the best feature of the technical services side of WorldShare Management Services the streamlined handling of bibliographic records. STEFANIE WITTENBACH, UNIVERSITY LIBRARIAN, TEXAS A&M UNIVERSITY SAN ANTONIO OCLC WorldShare Acquisitions: Web-based and powered by WorldCat.
A shared infrastructure built on... OCLC WorldShare Management Services are built on a global, interconnected Web architecture the OCLC WorldShare Platform. The WorldShare Platform also provides flexible, open access to library data through APIs and other Web services. Planning for a flexible future. WorldShare Management Services were developed using this shared platform infrastructure. Combining We have been involved in the development and information from many libraries and streamlining workflows across evolution of WorldShare Management Services functions, formats and locations eliminates traditional operational from a very early stage. Considering where the silos and delivers new efficiencies. Over time, new and existing OCLC world is headed, it made sense to us to work services including resource sharing and metadata management will be delivered through the WorldShare Platform. within the library community with OCLC for a cloud-based library management solution. The WorldShare Platform facilitates collaboration across the library community, so that organizations can make effective use of not only OCLC s applications, but also solutions built by other libraries or library partners. The Platform architecture and growing number of available Web services Library Built Partner Built OCLC Built enable partners Goodreads, Sustainable Collection Services and Alibris, to name just a few to enhance existing offerings or to create innovative new solutions. This allows libraries to leverage existing investments in OCLC and to realize extended value across the library Applications ecosystem. In addition, OCLC supports library staff with an interest in coding through the OCLC Developer Network and encourages the use Web Services of the Platform infrastructure to capitalize on the wealth of innovative ideas that emerge from this community. Data Whether an application is created by OCLC, a partner or a fellow library, Infrastructure the WorldShare Platform provides a central place where you can see available solutions and easily put them to use in your library. 5 ...a foundation of cooperative data. Cooperative data is at the heart of WorldCat, and is the foundation of the WorldShare Platform. Sharing data in as many ways as possible not just across libraries, but across functions, partners and geographies enables more connections from people to knowledge through library cooperation. Sharing, connecting and enhancing data. Built by libraries around the globe, WorldCat is the world s largest database of library metadata. Today, WorldCat data and services connect and provide access to more than 1 billion articles, e-books, videos, books, photographs, maps and other library materials. On behalf of libraries, OCLC works to share, connect and enhance this library data so that the full range of library resources can be more easily discovered and delivered at the point of need, through dedicated library portals such as WorldCat.org and WorldCat Local, and by sharing aggregated data with partners such as Google Books, Google Scholar and HathiTrust. OCLC s Webscale solution represents transformative change. Libraries have been working toward this type of solution for years. Taking routine library functions to the cloud will reduce duplication of loading records locally, and eliminates the need for maintaining local systems. Gregg A.Silvis, Associate University Librarian for Information Technology and Digital Initiatives, University of Delaware OCLC works with libraries, regional and national library groups, and content aggregators to represent libraries collective collection and services in WorldCat, including: Digital and licensed collections data (licensed materials, special collections, open access materials) Institutional data (vendor records and library information) Workflow data (acquisitions and circulation data, and resolver, knowledge base, search and interlibrary loan transactions). The future of library data. OCLC continues to explore new technologies, new partnerships and new approaches to data quality management, enhancing libraries ability to dynamically scale up to provide access to a full range of global library resources, or scale down to focus on the unique resources needed by an individual scholar or student. Aggregation and sharing of more data, about more types of library assets and activities, also enable library staff to benefit from new forms of shared intelligence. OCLC is improving and integrating more analytics to better inform decisions that individual institutions and groups make about collection management, resource sharing and service development.
Highlights OCLC WorldShare Management Services include all of the applications to provide a Web-based cooperative library management service for cataloging, acquisitions, license management and circulation, as well as a next-gen discovery experience for library users. Acquisitions for physical and electronic collections. All of your acquisitions functions are available in one service; no need to shuttle back-and-forth among multiple systems. A centralized vendor information center makes B2B services more efficient and cooperative. Circulation and patron management for the 21st century. All functions are handled centrally using a simple, Web-based interface. This intuitive user interface streamlines tasks and reduces the training effort for library volunteers, students and pages. Discovery and delivery as users expect it. OCLC s WorldCat Local serves as the end-user interface. Its single search connects users to all of your library materials (physical, licensed and digital) and the delivery services that get them what they need. Cataloging tools for data creation and enrichment. WorldCat metadata powers thousands of libraries cataloging activities. With WorldShare, this process is integrated with acquisitions your local holdings live in a single place for easy updating and cross-functional use. Collaborative cataloging by the global community builds better records for everyone s use. The results are more records, lower costs and better data. The WorldCat knowledge base. Combining data about your library s licensed resources and linking features, it enables access to content and helps you manage the workflows associated with these materials. Unlike data in a traditional knowledge base, WorldCat knowledge base data is not tied to a particular application it is added and maintained in a single place for use with a growing number of OCLC and non-oclc services. OCLC WorldShare License Manager. An add-on or stand-alone service that centralizes your entire e-resource management lifecycle from selection, negotiation and acquisition, to access and ongoing maintenance in one place. You can manage license agreements, rights, access and resolution to full text from the same interface, eliminating the need to synchronize data across multiple interfaces or devise work-arounds to connect disparate systems. And at no additional cost... a WorldShare Management Services subscription also includes built-in OpenURL functionality, an A to Z list, course reserves, evaluative content, cover art, a mobile interface for a wide range of devices and an OAI harvesting tool. Future innovations OCLC WorldShare Interlibrary Loan will replace the existing WorldCat Resource Sharing Service in a phased migration. The new service will transform traditional interlibrary loan into a broader fulfillment service that supports evolving workflow changes. This will position interlibrary loan as one of many options your library can offer to suit your policies and user needs. OCLC WorldShare Metadata will provide a complete metadata management solution for libraries licensed, physical and digital resources across multiple formats. This solution will be made available in phases over the next few years. WorldShare Metadata Collection Manager is now available for WorldShare Management Services users, while release of the new Record Manager is planned for mid WorldShare Analytics will provide aggregated, sharable data along with analysis tools that will allow your library to leverage cooperative information for better decision-making. They will support cooperative collection development, workflow assessment, collection profile sharing and more.
A closer look: Simpson University Located in Redding, California Just over 1,300 students The library owns 150,000 titles Planning for the future has its perks. When Simpson University Library s old server crashed on December 13, 2010, its staff were able to go live with OCLC WorldShare Management Services within one hour. The journey leading up to this critical point began in June 2009, when Larry Haight, Director of Library Services, and Eric Wheeler, Reader and Digital Services Librarian, questioned the reliability of their existing server, which was then seven years old. When they investigated costs to replace it, they realized that two-thirds of their costs were for services. Said Larry, We had been watching the progress that OCLC had been making with WorldShare and it simply came down to significant cost-savings and features. We presented our case to all of the appropriate groups at our university, all of which agreed with our assessment: WorldShare Management Services was the way to go. In February 2010, they sent MARC records to OCLC for a batchload reclamation project. In August 2010, they went live with WorldCat Local quick start. So when their server crashed, rather than being out-of-luck...they were ready to make the change. We re saving money in a variety of ways with WorldShare Management Services. The one-time implementation fee was less than the cost of purchasing proprietary ILS software, and we won t have to replace an ILS server every seven or eight years. The WorldCat Local advanced search options provide outside discovery services (something we wanted but couldn t afford before). The WorldCat knowledge base replaced our link resolver and the WorldShare License Manager provides for our e-resource management. Larry L.
