1 Fort McMurray MBA Program The University Of Alberta School Of Business will be offering its MBA Program in Natural Resources, Energy & Environment in Fort McMurray. The Fort McMurray MBA Program, delivered at Keyano College by the U of A School of Business Faculty, is cohort-based with the next intake happening in August Students will complete the 60-credit program over a three-year period. The program includes 11 courses (33 credits) in core management courses, 6 courses (18 credits) in Natural Resources and Energy courses, an international business course (3 credits), and 2 electives as chosen by the class (6 credits). Program Overview Three-year part-time MBA Program Starting in August 2016, completion date of June 2019 Delivered at Keyano College in Fort McMurray Course work follows the existing University of Alberta MBA Program with specialization in Natural Resources, Energy & Environment Eight one-week intensive courses o August 2016 (Orientation and course) o May/June 2017 (2) o August 2017 o May/June 2018 (2) o August 2018 Fall/Winter term classes: o Classes are held over five Friday/Saturday weekends each term (approximately once per month) o Classes would run during the day, typically 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. o Two courses per term (e.g. ACCTG 501 all day Friday; BUEC 503 all day Saturday) o Midterm and final exams scheduled during weekday evenings Program Cost: $45,000 Fort McMurray MBA in Natural Resources, Energy & Environment

2 Admission Requirements The MBA is a graduate degree program and individuals must meet the requirements of the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research at the University of Alberta to be considered for admission to the MBA Program: Recognized undergraduate degree with a grade point average of 3.0/4.0 in the last two full years of study or last 60 credits Two years of full-time work experience GMAT score of 550 of greater English language proficiency test (if required) Three letters of reference Statement of intent Resume Admission interview Financial Aid A number of students receive financial support from their employer. You could also look for support through Student Aid Alberta: Program Cost and Schedule of Payment The cost for the Fort McMurray MBA Program is $45,000 and is split into ten equal installments. The program fee does not include textbooks. Students purchase the course texts from the bookstore at Keyano College. The schedule of fees payments is listed below. International Component Within the Fort McMurray MBA program, students have the opportunity to travel as part of BUEC 663 NREE Capstone course. Past destinations have included Australia, the UK, Norway, Colombia and Germany. The exact destination(s) will be determined in Fall Students also have the opportunity to participate in one of the MBA international study tours that allow students to be immersed in a different business culture. The tours would count as one of the free program electives. The current international study tour destinations are China, Japan, and Europe (Germany and the Netherlands). 4 MBA Course Descriptions MBA Core/Required Courses: ACCTG Introduction to Financial Reporting and Analysis: Accounting information s role in recording and reporting on economic and business events including the primary financial statements: balance sheet, income statement, and cash flow. Concepts and purposes underlying financial reporting. The course begins to develop students abilities to evaluate and interpret financial information through basic financial analysis. ACCTG Accounting Information and Internal Decision Making: Accounting concepts used by managers in planning and decision-making. The course introduces concepts of cost and profit behavior, contribution margin, and activity-based costing, as well as relevant costs and revenues for production, marketing and capital budgeting decisions. The course also introduces students to the management planning and control system and its components budgets, variance analysis, performance evaluation in centralized and decentralized organizations, and management compensation plans. The importance of designing a system to fit the organizations strategy is emphasized. BUEC Economic Foundations: This course focuses on economic decision making at the level of the firm and consumer, utilizing demand and supply analysis to help understand a variety of economic and managerial issues. Formal models of managerial economic problems will be developed and used for purposes of analysis. The course will also deal with public economics, regulatory economics and introduce issues of information economics and strategic behavior. The theory of public choice and public goods will be used to analyze a variety of public economic issues. The course will also cover macroeconomic issues including: measuring macroeconomic variables, sources of economic growth, business cycles, interest rates, exchange rates, government debt, and other topics. MGTSC Data Analysis and Decision Making: This course begins with a survey of graphical and numerical techniques available for studying and describing data. Following an introduction to probability distributions, an overview of statistical inference for means and proportions is provided. Regression, analysis of variance, and time series models are discussed. The data analyzed throughout the course will be representative of data commonly employed by managers. MARK Principles of Marketing Management: This course commences with an examination of core marketing concepts, including strategic marketing planning, segmentation and the marketing mix (product, price, place and promotion) and the integration of these concepts into a marketing plan. Specific focus is then provided to developing pragmatic skills regarding marketing effectiveness. Fort McMurray MBA in Natural Resources, Energy & Environment 4

5 SMO Managing People: This course introduces students to organizational behavior (OB) and human resource management (HRM), and how to generate energy and commitment in employees. It examines options relevant to staffing, performance management, reward systems, leadership, motivation, decision-making, communication, labor relations, and current issues in the field of management. SMO Leadership Skills: The purpose of this course is to increase the student s understanding of leadership roles and skill in exercising those roles. These include team building, mentoring, managing conflict, delegating, managing participative decision-making, creative problem solving, and time and stress management. BUS 505- Ethics and Corporate Social Responsibility with Communications: This course focuses on the application of moral principles and models for ethical decision making to individuals and businesses in the 21st century. Contemporary ethical and social issues will be examined through the use of case studies, class discussions and presentations. Topics include concepts of individual ethics, workplace issues, corporate compliance and social and environmental responsibility. While examining ethical issues, emphasis will be placed on improving students' proficiency levels in verbal and written business communication. FIN 502 Introduction to Financial Valuation: Fundamental concepts in asset valuation are discussed in the context of simple asset pricing models. This course introduces the valuation of financial assets such as bonds and stocks. The concept of Net Present Value in capital investments is also introduced, along with basic financial planning. Other topics include an introduction to Markowitz diversification, the Capital Asset Pricing Model, and basic cost of capital estimation. FIN 503 Introduction to Corporate Finance: Fundamental concepts in the modern theory of corporate finance are discussed. This course introduces dividend policy, capital structure, cost of capital and its relation to leverage, and an advanced treatment of capital investments. An introduction to derivatives payoffs and valuation concludes the course. SMO 641 Business Strategy: This course examines top management decisions and emphasizes the development of business and corporate strategy. It integrates the management principles studied in the business core using a series of business cases. NR&E Courses and Electives: BUEC Energy Industries and Markets: This course provides a broad introduction to the energy industries and markets, focusing on market structure, firm strategy and behavior, regulation and public policy. The evolving nature of industries and markets, including technological challenges, environmental constraints and globalization, are discussed. 6 BUEC Environmental Management: The economic theory of externalities is introduced and applied in a discussion of alternative policy instruments such as taxes, tradable permits, and regulatory standards which are used to deal with pollution. Topics include current environmental regulation issues such as climate change, water and air pollution and firm strategy. Extensions include an introduction to cost-benefit analysis and environmental impact assessment tools for project evaluation as well as a discussion of the economics of nonrenewable resources. OM Operations Management: This course focuses on (1) the comparative advantage that a business unit can derive from innovative and efficient production of goods and services and on (2) analytical solution methods that are useful to analyze an organization s operations. Specific modules include process management; operations strategy; business forecasting; measuring and managing flow times, capacity, and inventory; and supply chain coordination. Analytical solution methods include risk and decision analysis, Monte Carlo simulation, and optimization. Cases will be used extensively. FIN 654 Risk Management: The main purpose of this course is to provide students with a working knowledge of how derivatives can be used in managing financial risks. The course will show how to use and price these securities, describe the markets in which they trade and examine how risk management contributes to firm value. Several cases will be used to put the participants in the position of a firm with a financial risk management problem. BLAW Natural Resource and Environmental Law: This course develops an understanding of the legal context within which managerial decisions relating to resource development are made. This will include a consideration of regulatory schemes to obtain required approvals, as well as the environmental and other considerations that go into decisionmaking. BUEC 663 Natural Resources and Energy Capstone This is a project-focused course dealing with market, business and policy issues and challenges in the natural resources and energy sectors. The specific content and issues addressed can change from year to year as a function of the evolution of markets and business activities. The core course activity is a group project focused on a specific industry or business challenge. BUEC The Global Business Environmental: Examines the changing global business environment and hot is impacts international business decision-making. Covers such topics as Trends in Globalization, International Business in Canada, Managing Multinational Corporations, Importing and Exporting, International Labor Markets and the Market for Skills, International Financial Markets, Financial Crises, and Corporate Governance in Different Countries.
