2 NEW EMV STANDARDS 1) Legacy POS systems must be upgraded or replaced with new chip and pin reader terminals that can read microchips that are embedded in credit cards. 2) In order to handle busy restaurant and bar workloads these systems must be integrated into the POS systems. 3) New POS system hardware will cost retailers $5k to $15k per venue. Desktop and mobile card reader terminals run $400 to $1,200 per unit EuroPay, VISA and MasterCard (EMV) cards embedded with NFC chips 2

3 POS SYSTEMS AND EMV Many POS developers did not build a EMV solution Logic: 1) Their is too much friction with chip and pin technology at restaurants and bars - this is true. 2) Very few chargebacks at restaurants and bars - this is true 3) Assumption - Rather than paying to upgrade their systems, retailers would opt to take the losses Then, something happened that they didn t anticipate 3

4 ROGUE CUSTOMERS Rogue consumers figured out that they can dispute any restaurant and bar purchase that is not processed with a chip card reader swiped VS card reader 4

5 POS SYSTEM CRISIS IS LOOMING 30 customers charge $50 = $1,500 - then dispute the charges 300 customers charge $50 = $15,000 - then dispute the charges When this happens retailers will quickly purchase: a) ingenico card readers b) new POS systems 5

6 INGENICO CARD READERS Owners & Servers dislike INGENICO card readers/scanners because a) they are expensive and are easily broken or stolen b) they take more time to process for the server c) they create friction b/c server must ask for the tip in advance 6

7 THE EMV PAYMENT PROCESS NFC readers take 10 to 12 minutes per table ApplePay & AndroidPay and chip card readers are actually slower than swiping 1. Server asks if the patrons are finished. 2. Server goes to POS system to print customer check 3. Server delivers check to the table in the leather binder 4. Server either brings a mobile scanner to the table or asks the patron to come to POS station. 5. Server must ask for their tip in advance in order to enter it into the ingenico scanner - AWKWARD. 6. Server inserts Visa chip card OR scans phone NFC chip, then asks patron to enter personal code. 7. The chip scanners are very slow, compared to the old card readers. 8. When the server completes the payment process, they return to the POS station to close the ticket. the new EMV payment process is much slower 7

8 THE TIPPING PROBLEM The new scanners require the server to obtain the tip in advance before they process the patron s payment. This process eliminates the possibility of the server entering a higher tip amount after the patron signs their check. Servers dislike asking their patrons for their tips 8

10 EXPRESS CHECK SELF-CHECKOUT Step 1: Patron Checks in Step 2: Server assigns the ticket Step 3: Patron Tips & Pays or the server can use the tablet Erin $43.62 $7.85 $51.47 Taps the ExpressCheck tab and the Patron is checked-in to the Retailer s POS or tablet When the Server assigns the ticket to the Patron, they no longer have to process their credit card ONE STEP completes the payment process Taps the ExpressCheck tab Taps the tip amount and taps Pay Now The Self-Checkout Process takes less than 5 seconds for both the server and the patron 10

17 INDUSTRY SNAPSHOT NFC enabled devices NFC scanners ApplePay and Google Wallet payment solutions have serious issues at restaurants and bars 1) NFC devices require desktop or portable scanners Desktops are non-starters because patrons have to get up from their table to get their NFC chips scanned. Mobile scanners are expensive and can be easily dropped or stolen. 2) These solutions require the server to ask for the tip in advance - which creates an uncomfortable situation for both the patron and the server.
