2 Safety Procedures Before reading this Technical Note, please refer to the section on Safety Procedures in the Barak User's Manual. About this Technical Note Barak's PCBs This Technical Note describes the procedure for replacing the PCBs on the Barak printer. There are four types of PCB installed on the Barak printer: The PCI is installed on the printer's computer. The BCCs (of which there are two,) are installed on the CARRIAGE, towards the back, as shown below. The Back Plane (of which there are two,) are installed on the CARRIAGE, just behind the PRINT HEADS' flat white cables, as shown below. 3 The DC-to-DC board is installed on the top right side of the CARRIAGE, as shown below. DC-to-DC Card Replacing the PCI Card The PCI Card ESD! 4 1. If the Barak5 FE program is running, close it. 2. Close the WORKSTATION. 3. Shut down the printer. 4. Remove the printer s left panel to access the PC. 5. Disconnect the power cable from the rear of the WORKSTATION. 6. Remove the PC s LEFT COVER PANEL. 7. Disconnect the high-speed COMMUNICATION CABLE from the PCI card. 8. Unscrew the PCI card and remove it from motherboard. 9. Connect the replacement PCI card to the appropriate connector on the motherboard. 10. Secure the card to the PC by tightening the screw. 11. Connect the high-speed COMMUNICATION CABLE. 12. Secure the PC s LEFT COVER PANEL to the computer, using the two hand-screws. 13. Connect the power cable to the WORKSTATION. 14. Relocate the printer s LEFT COVER PANEL and secure it. 15. Start up the printer and boot up the WORKSTATION. 16. Activate the Barak5 program and from the ABOUT option in the Help drop-down menu, check that the Micro-controller and FPGA versions are correct, as shown below. PCI & BCC Version numbers If these two versions are not the same, perform the following Firmware Update procedure A Matan Digital Printers Ltd. Page 4 of 11

5 PCI and BCC Firmware Update 1. From the TOOLS drop-down menu in the MAIN SCREEN, select BCC/PCI FIRMWARE UPDATE. The FIRMWARE UPDATE dialog box appears. Remember to always start with the PCI UC device type. 2. From the FIRMWARE DEVICE TYPE drop-down menu, select the required device. 3. Click select and select the required file, pay attention to choose both the right block and the left block In the OPEN FILE dialog box, browse to the Matan FE folder (i.e. C:\Program Files\Matan Barak FE ) and select the required file from Drivers > PCI and BCC A Matan Digital Printers Ltd. 6 The suffix for the Micro Controller update file is.hex. The suffix for the FPGA update file is.rbf 4. Check the VERIFY AFTER UPDATE option and click UPDATE. The progress bar indicates that the versions are being updated. File path for the PCI and BCC file versions A message above the progress bar notifies you that the update has been successfully completed. 5. Click CLOSE. 6. Close the WORKSTATION and shut down the printer. 7. Power up the printer. 8. Start up the printer and boot up the WORKSTATION A Matan Digital Printers Ltd. Page 6 of 11

7 9. Activate the Barak5 program and from the ABOUT option in the HELP drop-down menu, check that the Micro-controller and FPGA versions are correct, as shown in the following example. PCI & BCC Version numbers Replacing a BCC Card A BCC Card ESD! When touching a component that gives off Electrostatic Discharge (ESD), you must wear the appropriate discharger. 1. Exit the Barak5 FE program, than shut down the Workstation. 2. Shut down the printer. 3. Remove the CARRIAGE COVER. 4. Disconnect the four wide 100-pin data cables from the BCC. Make sure to insert the 100-pin flat cable in the same order. 5. From left to right, disconnect the following cables: HIGH-SPEED DATA COMMUNICATION CABLE (P1), ENCODER CABLE (J3), RS232 COMMUNICATIONS CABLE (J2) and the POWER CABLE (P2) A Matan Digital Printers Ltd. 8 6. Remove the six Allen screws (#4) and their spring washers and remove the board from its location. 7. Install the new BCC Board and secure it to the printer using the six Allen screws and spring washers. 8. From left to right, reconnect the following cables: HIGH-SPEED DATA COMMUNICATION CABLE (P1), ENCODER CABLE (T3), RS232 COMMUNICATIONS CABLE (J2) and the POWER CABLE (P2). 9. Connect the four wide 100-pin data cables. 10. Locate the CARRIAGE COVER and secure it. 11. Start up the printer and boot up the Workstation. 12. Repeat the section PCI and BCC firmware update, this time refer to the BCC UC and BCC FPGA updates, both left block and right block. Replacing a Back Plane A Back Plane ESD! When touching a component that gives off Electrostatic Discharge (ESD), you must wear the appropriate discharger. 1. Exit the Barak5 FE program, then shut down the WORKSTATION. 2. Shut down the printer. 3. Remove the CARRIAGE COVER. 4. Disconnect the four wide 100-pin data cables from the BACK PLANE. Make sure to insert the 100-pin flat cable in the same order. 5. Carefully disconnect the sixteen narrow data cables. 6. Remove the six Allen screws (#4) and their spring washers and remove the BACK PLANE from its location. 7. Install the new BACK PLANE and secure it to the printer using the six Allen screws and spring washers. 8. Connect the four wide 100-pin data cables to the BACK PLANE, as well as the sixteen narrow data cables A Matan Digital Printers Ltd. Page 8 of 11

9 Make sure to insert the 100-pin flat cable in the same order. 9. Locate the CARRIAGE COVER and secure it. 10. Start up the printer and boot up the Workstation. Replacing the DC-to-DC Card 1. If the Barak5 FE program is running, close it. 2. Close the WORKSTATION. 3. Shut down the printer. 4. Disconnect the four labeled wires connected to the card. 5. Remove the four retaining Allen screws and remove the card. 6. Take the new DC-to-DC Card and attach it to the CARRIAGE, using the four Allen screws. 7. Reconnect the four wires to their connectors at the top of the card, according to their labels. 8. Power up the printer and boot up the WORKSTATION A Matan Digital Printers Ltd. Page 9 of 11
