Teaching Assistant: Kaileena Flores-Emnace Phone: kaimonet@gmail.com Course Schedule First day of classes: Tuesday, January 22 Spring Break: March Last day of classes: April 30 Classes will meet on Tuesdays from 4 6:50 pm at the Los Angeles County Arts Commission 1055 Wilshire Blvd., Suite 800 (corner of Bixel just west of the 110) $4 parking available on Bixel north of Wilshire near 6 th Street. Course Description This survey course explores the theories, processes, and practices behind strategic planning and decision-making in arts organizations today. Practical applications will focus on developing concrete strategies and plans for managing arts organizations, including business plans, managing boards, fund-raising, human resources, facilities, and program development. Guest speakers who are leaders in the field will add diverse perspectives to class discussions of the major topics. Focus on specifics types of arts organizations will depend upon the interests of the students in the course.

2 Student Learning Outcomes: By the end of this course, students will be able to: Become effective arts managers who envision and position their institutions in the largest possible social context. Negotiate the real world challenges of competing priorities. This will involve reconciling aesthetic, managerial and economic considerations. Develop and lead an arts organization from mission definition, strategic planning, organizational development, and program development to resource generation. Lencioni, 2002 Additional reading will be distributed on Sakai. You are also required to: attend a performance at A Noise Within in Pasadena prior to the April 16, 2013 class, and visit the Hammer Museum s exhibition of Game Room before it closes February 17: The Hammer Museum is open on Tuesdays if you wish to attend before class and is free for students with ID at any time. 2

3 Course Requirements and Assignments: During this course, students will gain first-hand experience in the development of a non-profit organization from the ground up. Students will create each component of a new organization from mission statement to the final presentation that includes all aspects of the organization. The management teams will measure their decisions against a commitment to: Excellence and artistic integrity Public accountability and cost effectiveness Students will also select a local arts organization, similar in some way(s) to the virtual organization that they will develop during the semester. Through conversations with organization staff and board, they will research how course issues play out in this institution. Student will present inclass reports on both their local arts organization research as well as their own virtual arts organization. For a final project, students will present a full organizational plan. The written reports and class presentations will be worth 70% of the class grade. Much of the course will be centered on class discussions based on assigned readings and guest speaker presentations. Students active involvement with class group discussion and guest speaker sessions that demonstrates their mastery of the subject matter will be worth 30% of the grade. No incompletes will be given for the class. Material turned in late will not be accepted. Grading 3

4 Letter Grade * Grade Point Description Learning Outcome A 4.0 complete mastery of course material and additional insight beyond course material Insightful B 3.0 complete mastery of course material Proficient C 2.0 gaps in mastery of the course material; not at level expected of a TSRI graduate student Developing F 0.0 inability to demonstrate mastery of any course material or unethical standards of academic conduct Ineffective * 4 core course taken for a letter grade (pass= A or B for a core course) * 2 elective courses taken pass/fail (pass = A, B, C for an elective) Because students are encouraged to take electives outside their area of expertise, a "C" letter grade is passing. 4

5 Attendance Students are expected to attend all classes. Students who are unable to attend class must seek permission for an excused absence from the course director. Unapproved absences or late attendance for two or more classes will result in a lower grade or incomplete for the course. If a student has to miss a class, he or she should arrange to get notes from a fellow student and is strongly encouraged to meet with the teaching assistant to obtain the missed material. Scientific Professional Ethics The work you do in this course must be your own. Feel free to build on, react to, criticize, and analyze the ideas of others but, when you do, make it known whose ideas you are working with. You must explicitly acknowledge when your work builds on someone else's ideas, including ideas of classmates, professors, and authors you read. If you ever have questions about drawing the line between others' work and your own, ask the course professor who will give you clear guidance. The preferred method of submitting a paper or assignment is a hard copy. Written assignments will be returned graded the following week. Sakai will used to post all weekly readings.
