1 Ms. Nora Super Executive Director White House Conference on Aging 200 Independence Avenue SW, Suite 637D Hubert H. Humphrey Building Washington, DC Dear Ms. Super, On behalf of Oral Health America and 286 leading national, state, and local organizations and individuals, that believe oral health is an integral component to achieving optimal systemic health, we urge you to include oral health on the agenda of the White House Conference on Aging s Healthy Aging section. Oral health affects an aging population that is growing exponentially in America. In 2009, 39.6 million older adults lived in America. This aging cohort is expected to reach 72.1 million by an increase of 82 percent. For years oral health has been mistakenly disassociated from systematic health. However, oral diseases and disorders affect health and well being across the life cycle. The mouth is the entry point to the body and it can cause and detect disease. Older adults are more susceptible to age-related health risks and oral conditions such as periodontal disease, dry mouth, edentulism and oral cancer. Oral health is also associated with chronic diseases such as diabetes and heart disease both prevalent among older adults. Maintaining good oral hygiene is crucial for older adults to live a healthy life, free of disease. However, access to dental care is one of the greatest challenges facing older adults and their caregivers. This is due to a variety of reasons including lack of affordable insurance coverage and dental shortage areas in both urban and rural communities. 70% of older adults lack dental coverage and many are surprised to find that dental benefits are not covered through Medicare. 31 states have significant Dental Health Provider Shortage Areas (DHPSAs), meeting only 40% or less of dental provider needs. Patricia Cosgrove, an older adult residing in New York, shared her story with us, My dental procedures have been very costly and I had to contact a social service worker to help me understand my bills. Dental care should be more available and affordable because we know poor dental care affects overall health, which is particularly important for seniors. Older adults, like Patricia, should not have to bear the burden of inaccessible and costly oral care. Therefore, it is important to educate older adults that prevention is appropriate at every age, and that preventive measures are essential for maintaining good oral hygiene and minimizing disease. Preventive care is also a highly cost-efficient model across all spectrums of healthcare. While improvements in oral health across the lifespan have been observed in the last half century, longterm concern is warranted for older adults. By empowering older adults with knowledge and a sense of self-efficacy to care for their oral health, improved oral health and general health outcomes are achievable. This is why we contend it is crucial for oral health to be included on the agenda of the White House Conference on Aging s Healthy Aging section in Thank you for your consideration.
