Masters of Science Public Health Department of Epidemiology, Biostatistics & Occupational Health
Why Montreal? McGill s downtown campus is situated in the vibrant, multi-lingual, cosmopolitan city of Montreal. The Department of Epidemiology, Biostatistics, and Occupational Health is located on the upper McGill campus, in close proximity to the McGill University Health Centre and the McGill University Health Network, its Research Institutes, the Québec public health agency, and the Montreal regional health authority.
Who Should Apply to the Program? We welcome candidates from diverse backgrounds. Our students come from the social sciences, natural and quantitative sciences, or health professions. Ours is a very small program, with a strong focus on methodology, so quantitative skills are important. Students must have a good knowledge of differential and integral calculus at the undergraduate level. In exceptional circumstances, the admissions committee may take professional experience into account for mid-career or returning/reentry applicants.
Our Graduates McGill has an international reputation for training outstanding population and public health professionals. Our rigorous academic program ensures that our graduates are well-equipped to tackle complicated public health issues. Students of McGill s Master s of Public Health program will learn about complex population and public health issues, such as improving access to health care, controlling infectious diseases, reducing poor health behaviors, dealing with environmental hazards, addressing substance abuse, and more. These crucial public health challenges demand a well-trained public health workforce. Our students train in: statistical methods, critical thinking, evaluation, analysis, public health ethics, research design, measurement methods, etc. Proficiency is also developed outside the classroom. Graduates of McGill s MScPH program gain valuable experience though a 14 week practicum in a public health institution. During their practicum, students conduct research, design and/or evaluate programs, collect data, and more. Local, national and global placements are available. Graduates of the program will serve as population and public health practitioners, research professionals, educators, etc. Students graduating from this program can expect to find employment within the governmental public health system at the local, national, and international level as well as the non-governmental sector. Students may work as research assistants, coordinators, program planners, health promotion specialists, consultants, or find employment in managerial-level positions.
Our Program The Master s of Public Health (MScPH) is a 2-year, full-time degree program. It consists of coursework supplemented with a summer practicum, which takes place after the first year. A practicum report and oral presentation are required. Students typically carry between 10 to 15 credits each semester. The first year of study is devoted to building a solid quantitative base. MScPH students learn about managing population-level data, interpreting and critiquing research findings, using statistical software, the basics of health surveillance, measurement techniques, and more. The practicum places students in a public health setting to gain real-world experience. This is an opportunity to work under the supervision of an accredited practicum supervisor and apply the knowledge and skills acquired throughout the first year of the program. Second-year courses refine skills for your future career based on your specific interests. These are taken within the department, the university and approved exchanges with other universities. The MScPH department also holds a weekly Forum, which offers an opportunity to learn from researchers and public health practitioners, share practicum experiences, and respond to questions about the program.
