Who Gets Financial Aid? Every student, who meets some basic eligibility requirements, can get some type of financial aid regardless of age or family income. More than $150 billion of aid is available every year to students to help cover tuition and fees, room and board, books and supplies, transportation, and other educationrelated expenses.

Online Access Student Information System (OASIS) Answers questions about your student s financial aid 24/7! Accessed through My USF logon on the main webpage:

Online Access Student Information System (OASIS) Students can use OASIS to: Check for unsatisfied requirements Check for deferments Check Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) View and accept financial aid awards

Where Do I Start? FREE Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) The FAFSA is a form that parents and students must annually complete to apply for federal student aid School code:

Which FAFSA is Needed? When do you start at USFSP? Summer 2016 Complete the following FAFSA(s): & Fall

Summer 2016 (15-16 Academic Year) 1516 FAFSA: Uses 2014 Tax information for student and parent (**use IRS import)

Fall/Spring (16-17 Academic Year) 1617 FAFSA: Uses 2015 Tax information for student and parent (use estimated tax information to complete, then use IRS import after taxes are completed)

How Do I Apply? Fill out the online FAFSA, to apply for federal, state and institutional financial aid. The simplified online application is available at As part of the process, the student (and a parent if dependent) will need to create an FSA ID to electronically sign the application.

How Do I Apply? You can use the FAFSA On the Web Worksheet (FOTW) to practice on paper what needs to be filled in online.

FAFSA Points to Remember Use the name that is on the student s Social Security Card as well as the correct SS Number Students under age 24 are considered dependent. You must report both parent and student information on FAFSA Student of divorced parents must use information of parent they lived with most in the last 12 months. If parent is remarried, must also use step-parent s income

When Do I Apply? To be considered for the maximum amounts and types of aid, apply for the Annual application as soon as possible between January 1 st and March 1 st of every year. Note: Beginning Academic Year, there are two MAJOR changes to FAFSA: FAFSA application will be available in October 2016 instead of January Income information will be from 2 years prior, not 1 year prior.

I ve done the FAFSA Now What? Results of the FAFSA SAR, or Student Aid Report delivered to you by 3-5 days after your FAFSA has been processed, if you provided an address when you applied. Your SAR summarizes all the information you provided on your FAFSA.

I ve done the FAFSA Now What? Make corrections if necessary and submit online. USFSP receives your electronic FAFSA approximately 2 weeks after you receive a confirmation.

SAR Contains: Two important numbers: 1. DRN (Data Release Number) 4 digit number that uniquely identifies your FAFSA. 2. EFC (Estimated Family Contribution) Calculation using the student and parent tax information provided to the federal processor on the FAFSA. The resulting federal formula is the Expected Family Contribution (EFC). USFSP will use your official EFC to determine how much financial aid you are eligible to receive, based on our cost of attendance

Factors that affect EFC Student Income Student Assets Parent Income (if the student is dependent) Parent Assets (if the student is dependent) Spouse Income (if the student is married) Spouse Assets (if the student is married) Household Size Number of Family Members in College (excluding the parents) Age of the Older Parent Student Characteristics Used to Determine the Student s Dependency Status

How Does a School Determine What Types of Financial Aid a Student Receives? PART 1: Federal Formula ESTIMATED FAMILY CONTRIBUTION The EFC calculation is the minimum amount a family is expected to contribute toward a student s education.

How Does a School Determine What Types of Financial Aid a Student Receives? PART 2: Estimated College Costs COST OF ATTENDANCE (Inflated Budget) Tuition and Fees + Room and Board + Books and Supplies + Transportation + Miscellaneous Living Expenses = Cost of Attendance

Estimated Cost of Attendance (COA or Budgets) Summer 2016 Financial Aid Budget Florida Resident, On/Off-Campus Summer B (6 weeks) Books & Supplies $240 Tuition & Fees $1,167 Room & Board $1,734 Personal Expenses $469 Transportation $300 TOTAL COA $3,910 Financial Aid Budget Non-Resident, On/Off-Campus Summer B (6 weeks) Books & Supplies $240 Tuition & Fees $3,350 Room & Board $1,734 Personal Expenses $469 Transportation $300 TOTAL COA $6,093

Estimated Cost of Attendance (COA or Budgets) Fall 2016 or Spring 2016 (per semester) Financial Aid Budget Florida Resident, On/Off-Campus Full-time (12+ hours) Books & Supplies $600 Tuition & Fees $2,911 Room & Board $4,700 Personal Expenses $1,250 Transportation $800 TOTAL COA $10,261 Financial Aid Budget Non-Resident, On/Off-Campus Full-time (12+ hours) Books & Supplies $600 Tuition & Fees $8,368 Room & Board $4,700 Personal Expenses $1,250 Transportation $800 TOTAL COA $15,718

So, Financial Need-Based Aid is: The difference between the standard Cost of Attendance and the EFC COST OF ATTENDANCE - EXPECTED FAMILY CONTRIBUTION (EFC) = FINANCIAL NEED

Forms of Financial Aid There are two forms of financial aid: gift aid and self-help aid: Gift aid includes grants and scholarships gifts of money to pay for college that don t have to be repaid Self-help aid includes employment, such as on-campus part-time jobs that help curb college expenses, and loans that you will need to repay Gift Aid is based on demonstrated need and is designed to help students who cannot afford the cost of attending college

As a Result, You Can Receive: GRANTS (need-based) SCHOLARSHIPS (both need & non-need ) STUDENT EMPLOYMENT (need-based) LOANS (both need & non-need) Student Loans Parent Loan for Undergraduate Students (PLUS)

Grants Money that does not have to be paid back Need-based award that depends on priority FAFSA application deadlines (before every March 1 st for USF) Exception to the priority date is the Pell Grant.

Scholarships Money that does not have to be paid back Based on merit, skill, financial need. Apply for other Scholarship Opportunities (priority deadline for 1617 scholarships was January 29, however, we are still accepting applications for the USFSP Privately Funded Scholarships until April 15, 2016)

Student Employment Federal Work Study Need-based award Allows student to earn money via a paycheck paid twice/month Flexible work schedule Doesn t count against Financial Aid awards

Federal Direct Stafford Loans Subsidized and Unsubsidized Repayment does not begin until after graduation or when the student drops below 6 credit hours in a semester. Subsidized (need-based) Government pays the interest while in school Unsubsidized Charged interest from the time loan is disbursed until it is paid in full

Loans Money that parent or student borrows Money students and parents can borrow to help pay educational expenses Repayment usually begins after education is finished, or student drops below half-time enrollment Only borrow what is really needed Look at loans as an investment in the future: they help to establish positive credit

Deferments Provided to financial aid students to postpone payments for: Tuition and Fees: Automatically offered to students enrolled half-time who have: Incoming Scholarship or Bright Futures or FAFSA on file 10 days before classes Housing: Requires acceptance of a certain amount of financial aid Term Tuition Payment Date Deferment Payment Date Check OASIS to see if either deferment has been posted BEFORE classes begin each semester Summer B July 1 st July 15 th Fall August 26 th October 21 st

Financial Aid, Bright Futures and Florida Prepaid Payments At the end of the first week of classes, any financial aid, scholarships and Florida Bright Futures (FBF) funds are applied to the charges on a students account. Florida Prepaid will be applied approximately 30 days into the semester. Any disbursements will be applied to pay the remaining tuition charges before being applied to any additional charges owed to USF and posted to your student account.
