2 MEETNG OF THE REGENTS OF THE UNVERSTY OF NEW MEXCO April 25, 1936 Present Absent There was held a meeting of the Regents of the University of New Mexico on Satur<):?-y, April 25, 1936, at eleven a.m. in President Zimmerman's office. Present: Absent: Dr. w. R. Lovelace, President JDr. P. G. Cornish, Vice-President Mr. Adol o c. Gonzales, Secretary-Treasurer Mr. Hugh B. Woodward Mrs. Floyd w. Lee. Dr. Zimmerman reported that final inspection of the Adminis.tration and Laboratory Building, P.vV.A. Project No. 3792, had been made on April 20, The following persons Final Accept- were present: Dr w. R. Lovelace, Charles N. A thorough examination of the building was Building made and it was fom1d that the building had been completed in accordance with plans and specifications with the exception of two minor items. These items will be repaired and replaced in first-class condition at the end of the second semester. After discussion it was moved by Mr. Woodward that upon recommendation of the Architect, John Gaw Meem, the Administration and Laboratory Building, P.W.A. Project No. 3792, be accepted for occupancy as the project has been satisfactorily completed according to the conditions of the contract. The motlon-was seconded by Dr. Cornish and passed unanimously. President Zimmerman presented the follovling resolution to the Regents for their discussion: University Press to Supply Textbook by Hammond & Donnelly WHEREAS., Dr. George P:. Hammond and Dr. T. C. Donnelly, of the University of New Mexico, being the co-authors of a textbook entitled "The Story of New Mexico," have made arrangements with the University of New Mexico Press for the publication of said text book, THEREFORE, BE T RESOLVED, That the University of New Mexico Press, through its manager, Fred E. Harvey, is hereby authorized to negotiate a contract to supply the aforementioned textbook to the state

3 55 Board of Education for a period of six years. The manager of the University of New Mexico Press is further authorized to proceed with any and all details covering the manufacture, sale, and delivery of this book. Mr. Woodward moved that the above resolution be adopted, which motion was seconded by Dr. Cornish and passed unanimously. The following resolution was presented by Mr. Woodward: WHEREAS, by deed dated July 30, 1929, The Regents of the University of New Mexico conveyed unto Pi Gamma of Chi Omega, nc., a corporation, Lot Two (2) of Sorority Row on~the Campus of the University of New Mexico, subject, nevertheless to all of the restrictions, reservations and conditions in said instrument contained, said deed.having been thereafter recorded on August 27, 1929, in the office of the County Clerk and Recorder of Bernalillo County, New Mexico, in Deed Book 108, at page 515; and WHEREAS, thereafter the said corporation executed a certain mortgage deed unto Chas. G. Zapf, covering said property; and WHEREAS, thereafter, the said Chas. G. Zapf died leaving him surviving, as his sole heir and devisee, Pearl E. Zapf, who was thereafter appointed as Executrix of the estate of Chas. G. Zapf; and WHEREAS, the mortgage indebtedness in favor of said Chas. G. Zapf, and his estate, or a large amount thereof, remains unpaid and unsatisfied, and, by reason of the restrictions, reservations and conditions in the deed aforesaid contained, the said Sorority is unable to refinance said mortgage indebtedness; and WHEREAS, the Board of Regents of the University of New Mexico have heretofore, by appropriate resolution, authorized the investment of Six Thousand ($6,000.00) Dollars of the trust funds of the University in said real estat_e, and the said Board of Regents desire to fully protect and secure said advancement, THEREFORE, BE T RESOLVED, That said Board does hereby authorize the investment of said amount of Six Thousand ($6,000.00) Dollars, on the following terms and conditions: Purchase of Chi Omega Mortgage from Chas. G. Zapf Estate by University.;.

4 , The said corporation shall convey, by appropriate deed and bill of sale, to THE REGENTS OF THE UNVERSTY OF NEW MEXCO, said real estate and the improvements erected thereon, together with all'of the furniture, fixtures and equipment as contained in the Sorority House erected upon said lot, said conveyance to be accepted when accompanied by the o.pinion of the attorney acting for the University that the title to said -land is free and clear of liens and encumbrances. 2. Upon the delivery of said conveyance, the Board of Regents hereby authorize the Secretary and Treasurer, for and in behalf of said Board, to execute a contract of lease to said corporation, by the terms of which the University shall receive, as rental for said property, the sum of Sixty ($60.00) Dollars, per month, payable monthly on the first day of each month, until the full amount of Six Thousand ($6,000.00) Dollars, together with interest thereon at the rate of six (6) per cent per annum, payab~e quarterly, shall have been fully paid and discharged, with the right on the part of said corporation to anticipate any and all payments thereon. 3. That, upon the full payment of said sum of Six Thousand ($6,000.00) Dollars, and the interest thereon as hereinabove set forth, The Regents of the University of New Mexico will reconvey said real estate and personal property to the said corporation by sufficient instrument of conveyance, or, in lieu thereof 1 execute a long term lease on the real estate, reserving a ground rent in the sum of Five ($5.00) Dollars, per year, at the option of the said corporation, but, in either event, said deed or said lease shall be subject to all of the restrictions, reservations and conditions as contained in the above described deed as made by The Regents oft he University of New Mexico to Pi Gamma,of Chi Omega, nc., a corporation. 4. The transaction, as outlined, shall be consummated within sixty (60) days from the date of the passage of this resolution, and, if not consummated within said time, this resolution shall be void. 1 The foregoing resolution having been duly read, thereupon the adoption of the resolution, as read, was moved by 1tr. Gonzales, seconded by Dr. Cornish. All the Regents having

5 voted affirmatively, the resolution was declared carried and the President of the University was authorized and directed to. take such steps as might be n~cessary to carry said resolution into effect. Prof. of Economics 2300 President Zimmerman explained that with the exception of a few small increases the.salary schedule as approved is the same as last year. A written memorandum was presented to the Regents giving the qualifications of Mr. J. L. Bostwick. Upon the recommendation of President Zimmerman, Mr. Woodward moved that Mr. Bostwick be appointed Dean of Men, which motion was seconded by Mr. Gonzales and passed unanimously. of The resignations of Dr. Francis F. Coleman and Mrs. Kathryn K. O'Connor were accepted by the Regents. Upon the recommendation of President Zimmerman the following leaves of absence were approved by the Regents7for the year 1936~37: Edwin Snapp, nstructor in W. F. J. DeJongh, Assistant Professor in Modern Languages W. B. McFarland, nstructor in Economics. President Zimmerman.reported that the University Senate'at its meeting on April 22 gave unanimous approval to the plan for the establishment of a College of Fine Arts, the general proposal for the establishment of which was presented to the Regents in a memorandum dated March 9, t was moved by Mr. Gonzales, seconded by Dr. Cornish, and passed unanimously, that the plan for the College o:f Fine. Arts be approved by the Regents, to begin operation with the fall semester of the academic year. A suggested statement to accompany the request to the State Board of Finance for a restoration of appropriation was presented, and it was decided that each Regent would attend the meeting of the Board of Finance when the request is.. presented~ There being no further business, the meeti~g Date: 2f'd'--{ ---- /f.31 Signed: wa; adjourned.
