8 UP-grade, Grammar Questions to the following notice and review. Metropolitan Star Tribune Puma Poised Boost Devon Motors Sales Devon Motors hinted that its long-awaited new hatchback, Puma, will be released this spring. Critics and fans of the company alike are eagerly awaiting Devon Motors s entry into the compact car market. If it has any of the current Devon Motors styling, it should be hot! Long known for its flashy gas-guzzling SUVs and trucks, Devon Motors has seen its sales plummet as gas prices have risen and consumers shifted to smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicles. Devon Motors expects the Puma to help the company break into the small car market, which up to now has been largely dominated by imports. Automotive Review: Devon Motors Puma The Puma was designed to get your attention, and it does in more ways than one. Start with the styling. Its bold lines and sporty appearance make it stand out from the usually boring design of most hatchbacks. In fact, it resembles a sports car more than a compact station wagon. The 155-horsepower engine is not huge, but it provides plenty of power for this little car. And while it may look like a sports car, it doesn t quite handle like one. Still, it was fun to drive. It has a roomy interior, five seats, and offers plenty of space in the trunk. The Puma has decent fuel economy. With an estimated 32 miles per gallon on the highway and 28 miles per gallon in the city, it s not the best in its class, but it is far better than any of Devon Motors s other cars and SUVs, not to mention its gas-guzzling trucks. This is Devon Motors s first step into the small car market. I predict that we ll see better fuel efficiency in future version of this car as well as their other new smaller models. With a starting price of $15,935, it s not the cheapest in its class, but then again, it s still very affordable. I expect this car will appeal to young adults buying their first car. They are the number one buyers for compact hatchbacks. The independent automobile testing association, Riley Testing, gave the Puma four out of five stars for predicted reliability. Not bad, especially for a company that has recently gotten a reputation for unreliable vehicles. - J. C. Granger. Chapter 4 I 91
9 20. What is the notice mainly about? (A) Changes in imported cars (B) A new car company (C) Trends in truck design (D) A new model of car 21. What does the reviewer say about the Puma? (A) It will appeal mostly to sports fans. (B) It has a lot of space in its trunk. (C) It is overpriced compared to imports. (D) It offers outstanding fuel efficiency. 22. Why did Devon Motors decide to start making smaller cars? (A) To produce less expensive cars (B) To increase sales overseas (C) To respond to consumer demand (D) To increase its reputation for reliability 23. What can be inferred about first-time car buyers? (A) They will be unable to afford the Puma. (B) They tend to buy imported compact hatchbacks. (C) They like cars with lots of seating options. (D) They are only interested in styling and appearance. 24. How is the Puma different from other Devon Motors s cars? (A) It is more expensive. (B) It gets much better gas mileage. (C) It appeals to young adults. (D) It has a sporty design. 92
