5 Overview of 3D scan precision measurement of Bangudae petroglyphs in Daegok-ri, Ulsan This report is an illustration of the results of the 3D scan precision measurements on the Bangudae petroglyphs (National Treasure No. 285) in Daegokri, Ulsan, which were converted into images. The Bangudae petroglyphs in Daegok-ri, Ulsan is an engraving on stone that has high value for research on archaeology and art history, together with the Petroglyphs in Cheonjeon-ri,Ulju. It has various drawings engraved on a stone cliff with a shape having a height of 3m and width of 10m. It has over 75 types and 200 drawings such as sea animals including the whale, seal and turtle, land animals including the tiger, deer and goat, and other drawings such as a shaman wearing a mask, hunter, fisherman on a boat, wooden fences, nets, etc. In addition, the engraving method is divided chiaroscuro ( ), which expresses figures by taking out, and petrogram ( ), which makes lines by digging in. Through such techniques, it is evident that this was produced in the later Neolithic Age or during the Bronze Age. It is believed that this was engraved in hopes of making hunting successful and so that there will be abundant game. However, due to the completion of the Sayeon Dam in 1965, it is submerged under water for most of the year and its destruction is being accelerated due to the repetition of high and low waters. Thus, the Cultural Heritage Administration pursued a 3D image record preservation project using the latest 3D scanners in order to accurately record and preserve the status as of March The Division of Architecture Heritage of NRICH (National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage) was commissioned for the project utilizing its equipment and techniques. For the method of survey, a precision 3D scanner was used to record the precise image of the illustration surface and to record the rocks using long range 3D scanner. These were then combined to obtain the general image. Equipments used for this were the Vivid910 for the precision scanning and Cyrax2500 for the long range scanning. Work was usually conducted in the night because Vivid910 is in-door equipment and is very sensitive to sunlight. The survey period was two months beginning on March 30, 2004 after installing scaffolds and establishing survey plans and ended on May 29, 2004 with 3D scanning on the entire stone cliff. The daily scanning area was about 15cm x 18cm, and the actual scanning rage considering follow-up work was about 12cm x 15cm, and the one day scanning area was approximately 3m 2. Through follow-up work in 2005, the entire image was completed. In particular, new petroglyphs that were not reported in the past were discovered during the 3D scanning. At about 8:00 pm on May 6, 2004, traces that were not reported in the past were discovered through the façade finishing procedure following the 3D scan. The following day, they were filmed and once again 3D scanned, and after holding a meeting on May 11, it was found to be a new engraving. The rock surface on which the new image was found was located on the left side of the Bangudae petroglyphs. Because it is facing west, there is usually no lighting and after 4:00 pm, because it is exposed directly to sunlight, it is hard to distinguish with the naked eye. The additional images were a total of six, made up of one image supposedly being a whale, three animals, one person, and one miscellaneous image. A number of other traces that could not be made out were also discovered
