1 I n t e r n at I o n a l t r a d e P r o g r a m Overview
2 2015 Introduction: As an important component of the economic development process, international trade programs represent an excellent economic growth opportunity for communities and regions. The Birmingham Business Alliance (BBA) is the lead economic development agency for the seven-county Birmingham metropolitan region (Bibb, Blount, Chilton, Jefferson, St. Clair, Shelby and Walker counties). The BBA s international trade efforts are implemented through our existing industry program to encourage and assist companies throughout central Alabama to take advantage of significant global business opportunities. These efforts complement the BBA s programs to market and promote the region and state as a destination for foreign direct investment. Program Overview: The BBA International Trade Program is led by an International Trade Council, which is comprised of industry leaders and international trade practitioners who assist with the planning and facilitation of seminars and group training sessions highlighting the mechanics of exporting. The International Trade Council partners with the Export Alabama Alliance to sponsor seminars, training sessions, trade briefings and trade marketing to promote export opportunities to businesses in Central Alabama. The committee occasionally considers international trade-related policy matters and advises the BBA Public Policy Committee accordingly. The BBA also processes Certificates of Origin for local and regional manufacturing companies and works closely with other organizations to host foreign diplomats.
3 International Trade Education and Awareness Services: Alabama Department of Commerce Work in partnership with the Export Alabama Alliance, the District Export Council and other trade organizations to provide a team of export advisors to support and promote trade efforts for companies located in the seven-county Birmingham region (Bibb, Blount, Chilton, Jefferson, St. Clair, Shelby and Walker counties). Conduct a Trade Leadership Series in partnership with the Export Alabama Alliance, Alabama District Export Council, Alabama International Trade Center, the U.S. Foreign and Commercial Service and other trade organizations to increase international business skills of companies seeking to export or grow their current skill sets. Work closely with other organizations to host visiting foreign diplomats, including those from the countries that represent companies that have made direct investments or do business in Alabama. Host Export 101 information sessions for companies within the Birmingham region in partnership with our economic development allies. Support the State of Alabama Department of Commerce International Trade Division by hosting and promoting international trade mission market briefings. Utilize the BBA s communication channels to promote success stories of companies that are benefiting from exporting. Promote and distribute trade publications and information compiled by the Alabama Department of Commerce and the Export Alabama Alliance partners.
4 International Trade Marketing and Outreach Services: Alabama Department of Commerce Work in conjunction with the State of Alabama Department of Commerce to diversify Alabama s export base, concentrating on small- and medium-sized businesses working in energy, bioscience, advanced manufacturing and information technology. Process Certificate of Origin documentation for area companies through the BBA. Identify, solicit and host inbound trade missions when delegations visit the Birmingham region. Support events and programs with key international organizations, including: Japan America Society of Alabama AlabamaGermany Partnership Alabama India Business Partnership Support and participate in selected trade missions led by the Alabama Department of Commerce International Trade Division. Conduct marketing outreach to selected international trade multipliers, including foreign consulates and other trade organizations. Work with individual companies to address their export opportunities and challenges. Recognize employers that have exemplified trade excellence in our region as part of the annual BBA Small Business Awards Celebration. Companies recognized are nominated for the Governor s Trade Excellence Award.
