9 Who Should Attend? ESS courses and programs are primarily designed for engineers and scientists. However, technicians, lawyers and other professionals who are working in engineering or science-related industries, governmental agencies, universities or research institutes may also find the programs helpful in strengthening their knowledge of a given topic. Method of Instruction Lectures, case studies, discussions and visual aids are used to present course material. The laboratories and computer facilities at AUC are available to participants. The teaching materials are in English and are selected from recent sources. However, to improve communication between lecturers and participants, both Arabic and English may be used in instruction. Participants who are enrolled in professional programs are entitled to a Blackboard account. Blackboard is a web-based course management system that is designed to allow students and faculty members to communicate and use online materials and activities that complement face-to-face instruction. Through Blackboard, faculty members are able to add online resources for students, thereby enhancing the teaching and learning process. General Information About Professional Programs Online Programs and Courses ESS also offers programs for participants who are too busy to attend regular face-toface courses or who are working and living outside of Cairo. Since participants may lack previous experience in conducting online courses, online instruction and technical assistance will be available to help them overcome any issues. Professional Programs 9
