1 Setup MicroStation Distributed Rendering to use the Render Farm: 1. Launch the Process Controller for Distributed Rendering. 2. Configure the network location to \\ \backend\bentley\ and hit OK. Verify that it is setup right 1. Launch the Process Controller from the Start menu again to launch it and make sure it is setup. You will see the Distributed Processing Icon in the system tray (gray calendar icon) 2. Double click the icon to show the scheduler window. (Tip: if you don t want your machine to process renderings for others, set your Number of Processors to Use to 0 and click the Stop MSProcessors button. Alternately you can set a schedule of availability for your CPU to assist others in rendering. 3. Click on the Update Configuration button. A dialog will open that should show Groups and User Information.

2 If you are doing this from your personal laptop, you will need to enter your username and password to complete the access setup: Domain: ARCH Username: your UVa computing login (abc1d) Password: the password you use to login to Architecture School computers. Hit OK. Reopen the Update Configuration button. The dialog should now show a RenderFarm group under My Groups. This means you have access to the School of Architecture s render farm. Chose the Scheduler window. Distributed Rendering is successfully setup and verified.

3 To Use Network Rendering in MicroStation Within MicroStation, you can use Network Rendering to render and save to an image file directly through the Luxology Rendering interface. All Luxology tools are available through this process. Network Rendering processes your image across the network of nodes through breaking up the image into buckets, and processing different buckets on different nodes. You will see render progress interactively through the on- screen rendering window while it is processing. 1. Open a file with MicroStatation IMPORTANT: To network render, the original DGN file and all associated files needed for rendering MUST be running from a standard School of Architecture Network location such that the render farm can find and process those files. You cannot run from a file that is strictly on the local computer, because the render farm cannot access your local computer to get the geometry and materials it needs to complete the render. Usable locations include: (the drive letters must be correct for consistency of access) - Olmsted\Classes mapped to drive G: - Olmsted\Projects mapped to drive I: - Imagecenter\Scantemp mapped to drive H: 2. Setup all rendering setups, lights, etc. to ready the scene for rendering. (as usual) 3. Click the Render icon or choose Utilities > Render > Luxology

4 4. Click the Begin Network Rendering button (second button) to use the network. 5. Optionally, click Include This Session in the dropdown menu to include your own current session of MicroStation in the processing. This makes your computer one of the processing nodes. For renderings that will take significant time to process, it is not necessary to continue to monitor the rendering. Once you submit the process to the farm, the Render Farm job is self- contained. You may: 1. close the rendering progress window and continue working in MicroStation, including submitting more rendering jobs to the Render Farm queue. 2. Quit MicroStation, logout and leave. The file will be processed and saved. Monitoring the Job Queue If you want to see the job queue to see a job s progress and/or status: 1. Right Click on the Distributed Rendering Processing Scheduler icon in the system tray.

5 2. Choose Open Job Monitor 3. Select your job to see progress.
