7 TITLE BAR CODE LABEL REQUIREMENTS Page 7 of 22 Bar Code Label Requirements There are four different types of labels described in this document: intermediate container labels, shipping labels, packing list labels, and outer pack labels. These labels are described in detail in the following four sections. This section is intended to graphically describe the labels required for each type of purchase order. Purchase orders with single line items require a (4S) Packing List Label for each shipment, (3S) Shipping Label for each carton, and Intermediate Container Labels for each intermediate container. Purchase orders with multiple line items require a (5S) Outer pack Label, (4S) Packing List Label for each line item in the shipment, (3S) Shipping Label for each carton, and Intermediate Container Labels for each intermediate container. If Purchase Order contains... A single line item, then generate... Intermediate Container Label (if applicable).. 3S Shipping Label.. 4S Packing List Label.. Multiple line items, then generate... Intermediate Container Label (if applicable).. 3S Shipping Label (use on each box per line item).. 4S Packing List Label.. 5S Outer pack Label.. Janelle Murphy Page 7

8 TITLE BAR CODE LABEL REQUIREMENTS Page 8 of 22 Intermediate Container Label Description: This label should be affixed to all intermediate containers and this data is used for tracking purposes. It may be used by both the supplier and the customer. If necessary, more than one label may be used but must be on the same side of the container to insure that all required information is clearly visible. Dimensions: Label size will depend on data required and size of container. Human readable characters shall be a minimum of 0.1 inches (2.54 mm) high. Minimum bar code symbol height shall be 0.25 inches (6.35 mm). Minimum quiet zones of 0.25 inches (6.35 mm). Recyclability: Label material and adhesive should not prohibit ability to recycle the substrate. This may be a requirement for certain packaging applications in certain countries. Placement: The ends of boxes and ammo packs, sides of reels opposite sprocket holes, reel bags, tops of tray sleeves, reel boxes, and bundles. Example - if a reel is placed in a bag then BOTH the reel and bag shall be labeled. If the reel is sealed in moisture barrier bag prior to labeling, an extra easy peel label MUST be supplied for application to the reel when the bag is opened. The easy peel label must be attached to the moisture barrier bag. Intermediate Container Label -Example Janelle Murphy Page 8

9 TITLE BAR CODE LABEL REQUIREMENTS Page 9 of 22 NOTE: Both the 1T & the 9D are required. Both bar codes MUST be present on the intermediate label. If the supplier only has one type of data (lot code or date code) the data must be bar coded twice, once with each data identifier. Example of what data would scan: 9D0425 1T0425 A Unique Lot Code must be generated to track combination of both lot or codes. A maximum 15 alpha-numeric character field length is supplier generated and must be traceable. No more than two lot or date codes may be packaged on one reel, tray, sealed bag, etc. Moisture Sensitivity Level (MSL) rating MUST be in accordance with AEC and JEDEC criteria. Country of Origin 2 character country code is defined in ISO The country name may be spelled out on the label or company logo may be used. Manufacturer s Company name is required. Company address is optional on this label. Information may be divided onto two labels, if it is not possible to get all the required information on one label. If two labels are used, they must be on the same side of the reel, sealed bag, box, etc. Minimum bar coded data elements for Intermediate Label: Data Identifier Title Definition (P) Customer part number (1T) Trace code / Lot Code Continental part number is on purchase order. It is must be encoded without dashes. (refer to examples) Traceability number assigned by the supplier to identify/trace a unique group of entities (e.g., lot number, batch number, etc.). A Unique Lot Code must be generated to track combination of both lot or codes. A maximum 15 alpha-numeric character field length is supplier generated and must be traceable. (9D) Date code Date of Manufacture or assembly (structure and significance mutually defined). A Unique Date Code must be generated to track combination of both lot or codes. A maximum 15 alpha-numeric character field length is supplier generated and must be traceable. (Q) Quantity Unit quantity within the container. Quantity field is numeric only. Use of leading zeros or punctuation is prohibited. (V) Supplier code Mutually agreed upon supplier/vendor identification code as it appears on the purchase order. Leading zeros if any are required in this field. Human Readable Data Element Supplier Name: Country of Origin: Moisture Sensitivity Level (MSL) Definition Company name of manufacturer/supplier. Country manufactured or assembled in. May use 2 character designation as in ISO 3166 or write country name. Moisture sensitivity level rating MUST be in accordance with AEC and JEDEC criteria. All components must have an MSL designation noted on the intermediate label. If part is not moisture sensitive, use MSL 1 Unlimited. Janelle Murphy Page 9

Title - the name used to identify the data. Data - the data in the bar code field. Bar code label. (Q) Quantity: 1000 Human readable field. Bar Code field. Leading quiet zone. (0.25 minimum before bar code) Trailing quiet zone. (0.25 minimum after bar code) THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT THIS SAMPLE This is a sample code 39, also known as a code 3 of 9, bar code label. Use of the extended character set is not required for this application. When scanned with a bar code reader the user will see Q1000 as the de-coded data. Code 39 uses the Asterisk (*) which is the symbology s start and stop code. The asterisk s are not shown in this example but they are in the bar code symbol. The start and stop code is a required part of code 39 and they are put in the bar code automatically when off the shelf (purchased) bar code software is used to print bar codes. The length of the bar code symbol increases as the number of data characters increases. Normally a 4 inch wide label can accommodate 22 characters of data - this includes quiet zones and start and stop codes. The quiet zone is an area that is free of any marks. Janelle Murphy Page 20
