Why become a GS1 Australia Member
GS1 Australia s Value Proposition The GS1 System can help your business achieve faster delivery of goods, improved operational efficiency, better inventory management, accurate sales data, decreased costs and increased market share. GS1 Australia can help you achieve this. GS1 Australia
Welcome Thank you for your interest in wanting to become a GS1 Australia Member. We hope the information provided to you in this booklet is beneficial for you to make an informed decision. We also encourage you to call our Customer Service Desk on our National Number to speak with one of our helpful staff or visit us online at Maria Palazzolo CEO GS1 Australia
Who is GS1 Australia? GS1 is a neutral, not-for-profit organisation that has been providing information and direction on supply chain standards for 30 years. In the 1970 s the organisation was known as Australian Product Numbering Association (APNA), and later changed its name to EAN Australia. In 2005 the organisation was renamed GS1 Australia, as part of a global initiative. What Does GS1 Australia Do? As a member organisation of GS1, we administer the GS1 System, a global system of standards and solutions to improve supply chain management. Everything we do is aimed at helping business work smarter and more efficiently with the GS1 System as a platform. What is the GS1 System of Standards? The GS1 System is an integrated system of global standards that provides accurate identification and communication of information regarding products, assets, services and locations. It is the most implemented supply chain standards system in the world. The GS1 System: one global system, one global language. Why Consider Becoming a Member? At this stage you are probably a new organisation starting out in business that has one or many products and needs a bar code number/s (GTINs). You may also be an established business who is extending its range into the larger retailer stores or even trading internationally. Either way, GS1 Australia will guide and assist you through this process to ensure that your bar code number/s (GTINs) is unique to you and supported by the global GS1 System. We work in partnership with our members to ensure the authentication of your bar code number/s (GTINs) is globally unique and provide support and advice as required. Is it just a Number? There are many reasons to become a GS1 member. The most important is at GS1 we don t just give a bar code number/s (GTINs) and hope that you are able to work out the rest for yourself. We work with you to determine your requirements to ensure that we provide you with the appropriate bar code number/s (GTINs) and the right support with a cost effective solution.

Can I Buy Bar Codes From Anywhere? It is possible, however you must be aware of what you are buying and for what purpose. If for example, you require a ticketing system to monitor attendance at your next event, then a propriety bar code system may be sufficient and appropriate. If however you are buying a bar code from a bar code reseller then you MUST be aware of the fact that the bar code number/s (GTINs) you have purchased at a low cost, may have already been allocated to another company. It will therefore not be registered with GS1 Australia. It is possible that the number you have purchased has already been allocated to another company, and that: A retailer may not accept your product/s; and You may be required to relabel your product/s Note: Major retailers use GS1 Australia s bar code testing service. This assists them to ensure the readability of bar codes and verify they are authorised and registered to the brand owner.
Do I Licence the Bar Code Number (GTIN) for Life? Yes, unless your organisation ceases to operate or your product range diminishes and you no longer have use of the bar code number/s (GTINs). You must return these numbers to GS1 Australia. This way our registry is updated globally. Whilst you are an operating entity your bar code number/s (GTINs) are solely allocated to your organisation and no one else.* * NOTE: As long as the account is financial and meets all the current Terms & Conditions of your licence. What does Being Allocated a Bar Code Number/s (GTINs) Mean? When you register for membership you will receive a bar code number which is called a Global Trade Item Number (GTIN). It is this number that is allocated to every individual product. Bar code numbers are illustrated graphically so the information can be scanned and read. GS1 Australia provides the bar code number (GTIN). The artwork for a bar code is called a film and can be supplied in a physical form or as an electronic image. GS1 Australia can assist you in this process. Visit our Solution Providers Directory at
