1 Library Statistics of Schools in the Health Sciences: Part II BY THE COMMITTEE ON SURVEYS AND STATISTICS* OF THE MEDICAL LIBRARY ASSOCIATION ABSTRACT This report is a continuation of "Library Statistics of Health Science Libraries: Part I," published in the July 1966 issue of the BULLETIN. Interlibrary loan transactions, space assigned to library functions, historical collections, pharmacy libraries, new library construction, and automation are covered in this paper. Questions are raised concerning the adaptation of a general university library questionnaire to the subset of health science libraries. THE tabulation published in the July 1966 issue of the BULLETIN contained the major portion of the data obtained from the questionnaire sent to dental, medical, pharmacy, public health, and osteopathy schools in December The tables published in this part include remaining data derived from the survey. Tables 7 and provide data on interlibrary loan transactions, square feet assigned to library functions, and historical biomedical collections. Tables 9 through concern pharmacy libraries which are administered by general libraries, new library construction (195-64), and automation. PHARMACY LIBRARIES The U. S. Office of Education's questionnaire for survey of college and university libraries, which was used for this survey, was designed to elicit information on separate library operations. However, of the seventy-two accredited colleges of pharmacy, only twenty-two have separate libraries. Data for these libraries were published in Part I of the survey. Data received from twenty-six of the fifty integrated libraries are presented in Table 9. The question of when a subset of a collection should be administered as a separate unit or amalgamated with the whole collection appears * Susan Crawford, Chairman; Alice Dunlap; Maxine Hanke; Elizabeth L. Keenan (resigned Dec. 1966); Marilyn Miller; Vern Pings; Alan Rees. to be a relative one. In actual practice, it was found that approximately two-thirds of the medical schools amalgamated their pharmacy collections with the general medical collection. AUTOMATION Those who feel that electronic data processing (EDP) equipment should be a part of every library will be disappointed to learn that only 5 libraries of the 136 report any present use of such equipment, and only 9 others are planning for its use. Table 10 is a compilation of the responses to the question of whether mechanized services were operational for certain processes and, if not, when such services were expected to be operational. Although several libraries indicated that the use of EDP equipment was not expected until 1969 or later, all such responses were listed in the 196 column. NEW CONSTRUCTION Twenty-nine libraries reported the construction of new facilities between January 195 and December Both additions to existing facilities as well as completely new plants (such as the Countway Library at Harvard) are listed in Table. Allocation of space for various functions was compared against the guidelines established by the profession. STORAGE SPACE K. M. Metcalf has estimated that ten volumes of medical literature can be stored per square foot of storage space (1). By Metcalf's standard, four of the new libraries have all but reached the limit of their storage space, and six of the libraries must now be piling materials on the floor. Four of the ten libraries were constructed in 1961 or later. SEATING SPACE The "Guidelines for Medical School Libraries" suggests that seating space should be provided for 17

2 HEALTH SCIENCE SCHOOL LIBRARY STATISTICS percent of the total faculty and student population and that a minimum of twenty-five square feet be allotted per reader (). Using this guideline, the square feet available for seating space was divided by 0 percent of the facultystudent population as given in Table 1. Nine libraries have less space per reader than recommended in the "Guidelines;" six of these libraries also have storage problems, as noted above. An attempt to relate the daily census figures with the student-faculty population results in a confusing picture. One library reported a daily census of only 4 percent of the student-faculty population, whereas, on the other extreme, another library reported a daily census of 136 percent of its student-faculty population. The environments in which medical libraries operate must indeed be varied. STAFF AREAS The "Guidelines" suggest that 15 square feet be provided for each member of the library staff (3). Dividing the staff offices and work area space (Table 7) by FTE staff (Table ), we find that LIBRARY ACTIVITIES AND RESOURCES sixteen of the twenty-five libraries reporting do not meet the requirements set up by the "Guidelines." In the several areas subsumed under this section, the census function of this study should be clearly distinguished from the research function. The committee has, therefore, refrained from attempting to draw inferences from the data on such matters as quality of service. Further analysis of the data has been planned in cooperation with the Institute for the Advancement of Medical Communication. An attempt will be made to isolate parameters which will be most useful to the medical community in characterizing libraries. REFERENCES 1. METCALF, K. D.
