Adina Alpert Current city: San Diego, CA Hometown: Tarzana, CA Current position: Youth Director, Congregation Beth Am College: University of California, San Diego, Class of 2012 Ramah camp: California / Years working at camp: 4 (Counselor, Staff Programming Coordinator) Future Plans: For now, I hope to continue in my current job in Jewish informal education and potentially go back to school for a masters degree in education. Why are you excited to serve as an RSC intern? I am excited to combine the two major Jewish influences and experiences in my life: that of USY and Kadima and Camp Ramah. I look forward to providing my Kadimaniks and USYers with more information and opportunities to continue their Jewish experiences at camp! What do you love most about Ramah? What I love most about Ramah is how it brings Jewish youth together for a summer to live Jewishly, celebrating and learning about their Jewish heritage while also learning how to live independently and communally. I love the memories and friends I have made there over the years. Sarah Attermann Current city: Atlanta, GA Hometown: Orlando, FL Current position: Solomon Schechter Kindergarten Teacher, USY Advisor College: University of Florida (BA and MA), Class of 2009 Ramah camp: Darom / Years working at camp: 5 (Senior Programming Counselor, Division Head) Why are you excited to serve as an RSC intern? I am excited to show others how wonderful Ramah can be, and that it is more than just attending a camp; it is a chance to learn and explore all while having fun. We have wonderful programs that appeal to kids of all ages and backgrounds. Ramah is an amazing place and everyone should get a chance to experience it! What do you love most about Ramah? I love the passion that comes out when kids are engaged in a program at Ramah, and the love that is apparent when you walk into a camp. It is a place where kids grow and explore their Jewish heritage and learn to be proud of who they are and where they have come from. 1
Adam Baldachin Current city: Riverdale, NY Hometown: New Providence, NJ Current position: Rabbinical Student, Jewish Theological Seminary; Gladstein Fellow/Rabbinic Intern, Conservative Synagogue Adath Israel of Riverdale; Student Rabbi, Beth Shalom of Lake Norman, NC College: List College, Class of 2006 Ramah camp: Nyack, Wisconsin, and Rockies / Years working at camp: 6 (Counselor, Assistant Unit Head, Senior Educator, Staff Training Coordinator, Family Camp Coordinator) Future plans: I am currently a 4th year rabbinical student and hoping to work in the pulpit. Why are you excited to serve as an RSC intern? I believe that Jewish camping is crucial to meaningful Jewish experience and want to facilitate families forming a connection with Camp Ramah. What do you love most about Ramah? I love the positive feelings about living Jewishly the power of Jewish singing, tefilah (prayer), learning, and community. Additionally, the relationships formed with other Jews are especially rich at Ramah, since it is a learning community that provides for a constant engagement with others to achieve new personal and spiritual heights. Zoe Beiner Current city: Gainesville, FL Hometown: Atlanta, GA Current position: Student, MASA Intern College: University of Florida, Class of 2015 Ramah camp: Darom / Years working at camp: 2 (Lifeguard, Counselor) Why are you excited to serve as an RSC intern? I am excited to make my involvement with Ramah year round. It has always been a very important part of who I am; I am really looking forward to spreading Ramah s message in my local community and extending the camp experience to as many children as possible. What do you love most about Ramah? My favorite part of Ramah has always been the sense of total community and safety I have felt there. Ramah was my second home growing up it was the place I felt happiest and most comfortable. It is an incredible place to learn about yourself and grow, no matter what age you are. 2
Sam Feldman Greene Current city: Claremont, CA Hometown: Los Angeles, CA Current position: Religious School Teacher, Temple Sholom in Ontario, CA College: Pitzer College, Class of 2014 Ramah camp: California / Years working at camp: 3 (Counselor) Why are you excited to serve as an RSC intern? I have an opportunity to be a representative of the camp that I enjoyed attending so much. It would be so great if I were to help a child find Camp Ramah and be the person who directed him or her toward having the same amazing Jewish experience that I had as a chanich (camper). What do you love most about Ramah? I love the community that a person becomes a part of when they go to Camp Ramah. It is a community that you will always be a part of. Tamar Friedman Current city: Philadelphia, PA Hometown: Huntingdon Valley, PA Current position: Student College: University of Pennsylvania, Class of 2015 Ramah camp: Poconos / Years working at camp: 2 (Counselor) Why are you excited to serve as an RSC intern? I would love for more people to have the positive religious and social experience I had at Ramah. I think that going to summer camp can be very influential, and I hope to bring more people to participate in the amazing camping experience. What do you love most about Ramah? What I love most about Ramah is the sense of community it harbors. Living, learning, and playing together for two months builds incredibly close relationships both among campers and between campers and staff. It is a community that is not limited to the two months of the year actually spent at camp. Benjamin Landsburg Current city: Philadelphia, PA Hometown: Cherry Hill, NJ Current position: Marketing and Advertising Sales Representative College: Rutgers University Ramah camp: Poconos / Years working at camp: 6 (Counselor, Teacher, Division Head) Future Plans: I hope to be a teacher or do some sort of work in the Judaic world. Why are you excited to serve as an RSC intern? It seems like a great opportunity to be involved with Ramah during the year as well as being able to plan programs, which has always been one of my favorite things to do as a staff member during the summer. What do you love most about Ramah? Everything! Some of my best friends that I have today, 3
I met at camp over ten years ago. Also, over the past few years the food has drastically been better, which is something that I value highly. Elisheva Layman Current city: College Park, MD Hometown: Olney, MD Current position: Student College: University of Maryland, Class of 2012 Ramah camp: New England / Years working at camp: 4 (Counselor, Division Head) Future plans: My future plans for Jewish education and leadership include continuing my work at camp and religious school and promoting awareness of Judaism and social justice issues on campus. As a special education major I also have plans to work in the field of informal Jewish education for many years to come. Why are you excited to serve as an RSC intern? It will give me the opportunity to expand my leadership roles and interact with many students who have special needs. I work in the Tikvah program at camp is because I believe that everybody, no matter their ability, should have the right to a Jewish camping experience, which includes year-long Jewish education. What do you love most about Ramah? I love the culture of Ramah and especially the Tikvah program! I love that every camper, no matter what kind of needs he or she might have, are a part of the growing community at camp. There is so much love for the program and for all of its participants, which really goes to show how inclusive and warm camp can be. Becka Lefkoe Current city: Philadelphia, PA Hometown: Lower Merion, PA Current position: Student College: University of Pennsylvania, Class of 2013 Ramah camp: Poconos / Years working at camp: 3 (Counselor) Future plans: Biblical Archaeology or a Jewish Teacher Why are you excited to serve as an RSC intern? I get to talk about how much I love Ramah! What do you love most about Ramah? Do I have to pick one? I love the little bubble that camp creates, how nothing in the world matters when you are at camp except what goes on with your campers, your friends, your Judaism, and your experiences. I love the inspiration camp creates in campers and the 24/7 Jewish environment. And, of course, I love getting to dress up for no reason at all! Aily Leibtag Current city: Toronto, Ontario Hometown: Dundas, Ontario 4
Current position: Youth Director, Beth Tzedec Congregation College: McGill University, Class of 2011 Ramah camp: Canada / Years working at camp: 5 (Counselor, Division Head) Why are you excited to serve as an RSC intern? Ramah helped shape me as a person. It is one of the things that helped me be passionate about my Judaism during the summer and all year round. There is a huge difference in outlook when one experiences Judaism as opposed to participating in it. Ramah has allowed me to experience Judaism and I look forward to creating Jewish experiences for the Beth Tzedec youth. What do you love most about Ramah? I love the community, I love the environment, and I love that every day I am challenged. Ramah was fun for me when I was 9, important for me when I was 16, and inspiring for me at 22. What I love most about Ramah is that is never stops being a part of my life. Leah Loeterman Current city: New York, NY Hometown: Los Angeles, CA Current position: Rabbinical and Jewish Education Student, Jewish Theological Seminary; Religious School Teacher, B'nai Jeshurun College: Brandeis University, Class of 2010 Ramah camp: California / Years working at camp: 3 (Counselor, Tzedaka/Tikkun Olam Coordinator) Future Plans: I am a student at JTS, studying and preparing for a career in the rabbinate focused on Jewish education. Why are you excited to serve as an RSC intern? I look forward to connecting with families about Ramah, something that has always been an important and influential part of my life. I hope to impart a sense of what an amazing experience and community Ramah can be. What do you love most about Ramah? I love the community and strong sense of Jewish identity that Ramah fosters in its campers, staff, and affiliated families. 5
Myra Meskin Current city: Los Angeles, CA Hometown: Los Angeles, CA Current position: Religious School Teacher, Temple Aliyah in Woodland Hills, CA College: University of California, San Diego, Class of 2010 Ramah camp: California / Years working at camp: 6 (Counselor, Special Programs Coordinator/Educator, Division Head) Future thoughts or plans (if any) to work in Jewish education/leadership: I am planning to apply this year for masters programs in experiential Jewish education. Why are you excited to serve as an RSC intern? I'm excited to use this opportunity to bring the spirit of Ramah into the other ten months of the year and to hopefully breathe new life into my synagogue community. What do you love most about Ramah? What I love most about Ramah is that it allows me to be the best version of myself personally, professionally, and religiously. And I believe that we can give everyone who enters our community the opportunity to feel that. Marcy Morris Current city: Boca Raton, FL Hometown: Boca Raton, FL Current position: Student, Religious School Teacher College: Florida Atlantic University, Class of 2013 Ramah camp: Darom / Years working at camp: 4 Why are you excited to serve as an RSC intern? The chance to reach out to new families and stay in touch with the Ramah families in our community year-round, for me, is a chance to see our families enjoy camp, just as much as their children do during the summer. Sharing the Ramah values and sense of learning with those in my community is also rewarding. What do you love most about Ramah? I love that no matter where I go, I always seem to know someone from the Ramah community. I can easily relate to and share similar values and experiences with those who have also attended or worked at a Ramah camp. The sense of community is a comfort and blessing. 6
Graeme Ossey Current city: Durham, NC Hometown: Greensboro, NC Current position: Religious School Teacher, USY Adviser; Center of Innovation for Nanobiotechnology Associate College: Emory, Class of 2011 Ramah camp: Darom / Years working at camp: 5 (Madrich Hevrati, Rosh Edah) Why are you excited to serve as an RSC intern? I am really excited to infuse a traditional learning environment with programming and activities that make Jewish learning fun. Religious school is a big time commitment for students and families to make and I think Ramah-style programming can make this time more valuable and enjoyable for the students. What do you love most about Ramah? I love being with my best friends in the world in an environment where Jewish living is a given and Jewish Learning is taken to extraordinary levels. Ari Polsky Current city: Davis, CA Hometown: Sherman Oaks, CA Current position: USY Advisor, Sacramento College: UC Davis, Class of 2012 Ramah camp: California / Years working at camp: 4 (Counselor, Division Head) Why are you excited to serve as an RSC intern? I grew up in an active and engaged synagogue community, in which camp was regularly a part, and I would like to see that happen in this community as well. What do you love most about Ramah? I love how natural the relationships are that come from camp, and how even if you haven t seen a camp friend in years, once you reconnect, it s as if no time passed. I love that aspect of friendships and community that camp creates. Joey Resnick Current city: Providence, RI Hometown: Teaneck, NJ Current position: Religious High School Teacher College: Brown University, Class of 2013 Ramah camp: New England / Years working at camp: 3 (Counselor) Future plans: While I am not sure where I see myself post-college; I have certainly enjoyed any and all opportunities to teach Jewish values in both formal and informal settings. I will remain committed to my local Jewish community (wherever that may be) and hope to be able to contribute to its success. Why are you excited to serve as an RSC intern? I value the years that I spent at Ramah and hope to share the same experiences with others. The RSC allows me to work with my local community in Providence to spread commitment to Jewish camping. 7
What do you love most about Ramah? Ramah provides a 24/7 environment in which every action, thought, and feeling is intentional within the context of a living, breathing Jewish community. Entering any Ramah camp is becoming immersed in an awe-inspiring community that fulfills the spiritual needs of all who are present. Rebecca Schatz Current city: Los Angeles, CA Hometown: Los Angeles, CA Current position: Master s Student, American Jewish University; Religious School Teacher and USY Advisor, Sinai Temple College: Indiana University, Class of 2010 Ramah camp: California / Years working at camp: 6 (Counselor, Division Head) Future Plans: After receiving my master s degree from the AJU in May, I plan to attend rabbinical school. I am hoping to combine my two passions of being a high school choir director and an educational Rabbi at the same institution. Through this long journey, I will always be connected to National Ramah, will continue to work at a Ramah camp through every step of my career, and will make sure that my students and my own children attend! Why are you excited to serve as an RSC intern? My Judaism started in my home and continued to flourish at Ramah California. I am excited to utilize the experiential educational outlook of how to treat Judaism at a Ramah camp and bring it to the classrooms, schools, and synagogues I am working in and will continue to be part of forever. What do you love most about Ramah? The cliché home is where the heart is could not be more true about Ramah. Once you go to Ramah, your heart remains at your camp until the next summer and you bring the ruach (spirit) and kavanah (spirituality) for Jewish education with you during the year. The relationships and lessons you learn as a camper or staff member at Ramah are lifelong and give you the additional bonus of doing everything through a Jewish lens. Scott Scheff Current city: New York, NY Hometown: Orangeburg, NY Current position: Adult Conversational and Beginner's Hebrew Tutor College: List College and Columbia University, Class of 2014 Ramah camp: Nyack and Berkshires / Years working at camp: 3 (Tefillot Coordinator, Counselor) Future plans: I don't know exactly what my future plans are at this point, but my goal is to always be involved in the Ramah camping movement in one way or another. I love Judaic education and, whether it is in a formal or informal setting, I will try to teach and educate young kids wherever I go. Why are you excited to serve as an RSC intern? I now have the opportunity to give back to an organization that has given me so much. I am extremely excited about the opportunity to present 8
kids and young adults with the possibilities and experiences Ramah has to offer because I have first-hand knowledge as to how they can change a person's life. What do you love most about Ramah? The sense of community. Everyone comes from a different Judaic background, both academically and religiously; even so, none of that matters because everyone is so tolerant and understanding about the position of his or her friends. Ramah breeds this kind of discussion and tolerance, and I don't believe you can really get that anywhere else in the world. Laura Silverman Current city: East Brunswick, NJ Hometown: East Brunswick, NJ Current position: Religious School Teacher, East Brunswick Jewish Center College: Rutgers University, Class of 2011 Ramah camp: Berkshires / Years working at camp: 7 (Waterfront Staff, Waterfront Director) Future plans: I hope to continue teaching the classes that I teach at the East Brunswick Jewish Center. Why are you excited to serve as an RSC intern? I am excited to serve as an RSC intern because I love camp, and now I will have the opportunity to help other people love camp by bringing some of the camp ruach (spirit) home and advocating for people to come to camp during the summer. What do you love most about Ramah? I love that no matter where I am there is someone there with a connection to Ramah. It's an instant connection. Whether or not we went to the same Ramah camp, we know each other or we know people in common. It's amazing. Rafi Spitzer Current city: Boston, MA Hometown: Sharon, MA Current position: Informal Educator, Congregation Kehillath Israel College: Boston University, Class of 2012 Ramah camp: New England / Years working at camp: 3 (Counselor, Assistant Division Head) Future plans: I would like to be a rabbi. Why are you excited to serve as an RSC intern? I am excited to be an RSC intern again this year because as such I feel like I am a part of something worthwhile. This is a really exciting way to bring camp home, and to use the skills I learn at camp throughout the year. As KI's informal educator, I've been doing a lot of Ramah-style programming. What do you love most about Ramah? I love the people, the conversations, the depth of interactions that can happen at camp, and the possibility for growth and impact. 9
Aaron Walinsky Current city: Philadelphia, PA Hometown: Bensalem, PA Current position: Student College: Temple University, Class of 2014 Ramah camp: Poconos / Years working at camp: 3 (Counselor) Why are you excited to serve as an RSC intern? Because I love camp and want other people to attend and see why I love it so much and still make it a significant part of my life. What do you love most about Ramah? The community and the friends I have made over my years at camp are the best I have in my life and I don't know where I would be without them. Mike Weiss Current city: Orlando, Florida Hometown: Boca Raton, Florida Current position: Youth Director, Temple Israel in Winter Springs, Florida College: University of Central Florida, Class of 2014 Ramah camp: Darom / Years working at camp: 2 (Miktzoi, Senior Hevrati) Future plans: I look forward to continuing to work as a youth drector for several years to come. I love the mix of education and social environment that USY gives to Jewish youth. Why are you excited to serve as an RSC intern? I am excited to serve as an RSC intern because I want to bring my memories and excitement about camp to families that have not had the Ramah experience yet. What do you love most about Ramah? I love most the different personalities each child brings to camp. Everywhere you go in camp, you meet other Jewish kids from all over the United States who enjoy the same activities you do. 10
