SERVICES FOR TEACHER CANDIDATES Certification All applicants for certification in Kentucky must be recommended by the institution where the student completed his/her program. Students desiring an Interdisciplinary Early Childhood Education (IECE) Certificate, an Elementary Certificate, a Middle School Certificate, or a Secondary Schools Certificate must file an application prior to the date of anticipated graduation. This application is to be filed in the COEHS Advising Center at Northern Kentucky University. Students desiring certification in other states must meet all of the requirements for Northern Kentucky University s program. Kentucky s Education Professional Standards Board requires all applications for teacher certification to be accompanied by an official transcript of grades. If a student has completed coursework at an institution other than NKU, an official transcript must be requested by the student from that institution. The transcript should be sent to the COEHS Advising Center so that it can be submitted with the certification application. The Kentucky Education Professional Standards Board has established time limits for issuance of a certification after completion of a program; therefore, it is recommended that application be made during the clinical experiences semester even though employment is not anticipated immediately after graduation. Initial certification of all new teachers requires the successful completion of appropriate written tests prior to certification. The test battery currently required is the Praxis Series both content and Principles of Learning and Teaching. The tests measure knowledge in the specific teaching field of the applicant and the Principles of Learning and Teaching. The Educational Professional Standards Board shall determine any additional assessment necessary and the minimum acceptable level of achievement on each test. It is the applicant s responsibility to become aware of testing dates and make appropriate application. Please check to verify all tests that are required for your certification. Students are required to designate Northern Kentucky University and the Education Professional Standards Board (R7283) as recipients of the results. Upon successful completion of the tests and the approved teacher preparation program, a statement of eligibility (SOE) valid for five (5) years shall be issued. All new teachers and out of state teachers with less than two (2) years of successful teaching experience who are seeking initial certification in Kentucky shall serve a one-year internship. The teacher shall be a full-time or part-time employee with supervision, assistance, and assessment during the one-year internship. Successful completion shall be determined by a majority vote of the beginning teacher committee. The internship period shall be counted as experience for the purpose of continuing contract status, retirement eligibility and benefits for single salary experience increments. Teacher candidates are required by the Kentucky Education Professional Standards Board to successfully complete all PRAXIS II tests in order to be eligible for certification. Teacher candidates must bear the expense for these examinations. Test dates are established by Educational Testing Service (ETS). Registration information and dates can be found in the test booklets which are available in COEHS Advising center (MEP 230) or on-line at Applicants for initial Kentucky certification must designate the Kentucky Professional Standards Board and NKU as score recipients. The Certification Specialist in the College of Education and Human Services will provide assistance. Also, one of the clinical experience seminars will address certification and testing information.
CERTIFICATION INFORMATION FOR ALL TEACHER CANDIDATES SEEKING CERTIFICATION: The Registrar s Office must have posted your graduation date on NKU s transcript before Teacher Certification Applications can be filed. This process takes 4-6 weeks after your graduation ceremony. There is no way to speed up this process. You must pass all Praxis II required tests before your application can be completed for state certification. Include NKU(code: RA1574) as a score recipient. If you take Praxis out of state include EPSB(code: R7283) as a score recipient. If you are unsure if you had the scores sent to our office, please stop by MEP 230 or Christy Swanson at swansonc1@nku.edu. has the most updated list of Praxis requirements Search by state to see the required tests for KY. We will not list the test numbers as they are subject to change. Your score reports are posted to your ETS account. They are not mailed to you. Please save your reports as you never know when you will need them again. Be aware of testing windows as some tests are limited to certain dates: Official transcripts are required from all Universities and Colleges you have attended. You will need one for each state you are applying for. Do not wait until the last minute to register for your tests as some locations fill more quickly than others. You must have met all College of Education and Human Services criteria for graduation. Please make sure you have paid all fees to the university and completed the Senior Survey (DIFFERENT FROM THE STUDENT TEACHING SURVEYS). You will need to complete an application for each state you intend to apply for certification. Kentucky is moving to an Online application January 2015!
CERTIFICATION INFORMATION INFORMATION FOR KENTUCKY CERTIFICATION Please complete the CA-1 application for Kentucky and return it to the Certification Specialist. The CA-1 Application can be found: Select Certification, then Application forms. IT MUST BE SENT FROM OUR OFFICE TO FRANKFORT You will fill out page 1, 3 and the top of page 5 only. This can be turned in prior to graduation. There is no fee to apply in KY. Your CA-1 application will not be sent to EPSB until you have passed all Praxis II requirements and your degree has been posted. The Certification Specialist must have Official transcripts from ALL other universities and colleges that you have attended. The copies you gave the NKU Admissions Office upon application cannot be used for certification. Include your official transcripts WITH your CA-1 application. You will receive a Statement of Eligibility (SOE) that enables you to seek employment. The Certification Specialist will also request a Five Year Substitute Teaching Certificate for you. Once you have been hired by a school district in Kentucky they will send a Confirmation of Employment (COE) to the Education Professional Standards Board (EPSB) in Frankfort. As a 1 st year teacher you are enrolled in the Kentucky Teacher Intern Program (KTIP) and will receive a 1 year provisional teaching certificate. Upon successful completion of KTIP you will receive a 4 year professional certificate. If the internship is unsuccessful, you can appeal the decision and if granted, repeat the internship process a second time.
SECTION 3: OHIO CERTIFICATION 2 for 1 - Ohio will honor Kentucky Praxis II requirements if applying for Kentucky certification. It is our recommendation you take Praxis II test requirements and complete the Kentucky application process as stated on the previous page. You will then be able to include your Statement of Eligibility with the Ohio application showing certification in Kentucky. Ohio will not require you to take the OAE when completing this process. You can include a copy of your Praxis scores with your ODE application. When applying for licensure you will submit your application online through ODE. When completing your online application select the Initial 4 Year Resident Education/ Teaching Out of State application NKU cannot become an e-signer since we are not an Ohio institution. The application does not require an e-signer if it does then you have chosen the wrong application. The out of state teaching application and information packet can be found here: education.ohio.gov/topics/teaching/educator-licensure/audiences/out-of-state-licensure If you do not want to apply for Kentucky certification then you will need a letter of eligibility from the NKU COEHS Certification Specialist to include with your application. This letter states that you have successfully completed student teaching and the grade levels for the program you completed. This letter can be sent to you after you have completed student teaching. You will mail All Official College Transcripts to the Ohio Department of Education. Praxis II tests completed and passed through August 31, 2013 are acceptable. As of September 1, 2013 Ohio moved to the Ohio Assessment for Educator s test. Please visit the following website for more information: Prepare-for-Certificate-License/Educator-Licensure-Examinations To register for the OAE test please visit this site: As a first year teacher you will be part of the Ohio Four Year Resident Educator Program. For all other information please contact ODE directly.
Reading Course Requirement for Certification in Ohio 1. If you are an elementary, middle grades, special education, or IECE student, Ohio licensure requires a minimum of twelve semester hours of coursework in the teaching of reading, including at least one separate three semester hour course in the teaching of phonics. NKU offers EDU 317, Teaching of Phonics in the Elementary and Middle School, which satisfies the phonics course requirement. Please note EDU 317 is NOT required for graduation from an NKU education program. NKU also offers EDU 525, Differentiated Instruction in Literacy which can satisfy additional reading hours needed. Please note EDU 525 is not required for graduation from an NKU education program. Elementary students will take EDU 302, Teaching of Reading, which will satisfy another 3 hours of reading coursework. Middle grades students will take EDU 304, Reading and Writing Across the Curriculum, which will satisfy another 3 hours of reading coursework. IECE students will take EDU 554, Language Development and Emergent Literacy, which will satisfy 3 hours of reading coursework. 2. If you are a secondary or P-12 student, Ohio requires a three semester hour course on the teaching of reading in the content area. Secondary English Education and World Language majors will take EDU 530, Reading in the Junior and Senior High School, which will satisfy the reading course requirement. 3. Most students will leave the NKU program needing 3-6 hours of reading coursework that is required for an Ohio Four Year Resident Certificate. It is important to know that Ohio schools will hire you (and many NKU graduates are hired each year by Ohio schools) but you will need to complete the required reading coursework within your first four years of teaching, while completing the Ohio Resident Educator Program. 4. There could be additional coursework that Ohio or other states will require you to take to become fully licensed/ certified, as licensure/ certification requirements are determined by each individual state.
SECTION 4: INDIANA CERTIFICATION Indiana will honor KY certification if you would like to become eligible in both states. You will need to follow requirements for Kentucky listed on page 2. Indiana will then give you a year to complete any required state deficiencies. All initial licensure applicants in Indiana are required to take the pedagogy exam for the grade level in licensing. You will have a year to meet this requirement. New Testing in Indiana - Indiana Core Assessment(s) For more information and to register for the test: Indiana will accept Praxis II passing content test(s) taken by May 31, If you do not want to apply for Kentucky certification you can apply directly to Indiana and they will evaluate your credentials. There is a $35 evaluation fee. Other application requirements: More information can be found here:
