3 Financial Markets Specialization Introduction to Financial Theory This course is an introduction to the theoretical and conceptual foundations of finance. Theories which will be explored and exploited in a progression towards a better understanding of asset value determination and rational decision making include the following: utility theory, state-preference theory, mean-variance portfolio theory, the capital asset pricing model, the arbitrage pricing theory, and the Modigliani-Miller and information theories of capital structure. It uses the case approach to apply these concepts. Introduction to Financial Mathematics This course is an introduction to the mathematical methods used in finance and their practical applications. Topics covered include an introduction to probability, binomial model of asset pricing, measure and integration, as well as stochastic calculus, and the Black-Scholes equation. Foundations for Asset Management This course emphasizes the application of quantitative techniques to asset management problems. The course covers asset pricing models in depth, portfolio optimization and construction, and dynamic strategies such as pairs trading, long-term and short-term momentum trades, and strategies that address behavioral finance anomalies. The course also discusses major forms of asset management structures such as mutual funds, hedge funds, ETFs, and special investment vehicles, as well as examining some of the primary types of trading strategies used by these organizations. Derivatives 1 This course is an introduction to derivatives markets focusing in particular on futures, forwards, and options. The basic concepts, models, analyses, and technical tools of quantitative finance used in these markets will be explained and put to use in this class. A strong emphasis is placed on applications using realistic examples and cases to illustrate and give meaning to all theory covered. Financial Modeling This course is a "hands-on" use of computerized decision aids to analyze a variety of financial problems. The focus of this course is on developing spreadsheet models for a wide variety of financial concepts including, but not limited to portfolio optimization, option pricing, asset allocation, value at risk, asset prices, etc. Students will gain familiarity with the financial instruments through the construction of the models, and will gain greater insights by analyzing and solving the models. Simulation and optimization are used extensively to analyze the models. 3
4 History of Financial Markets, Innovation, & Regulation 12 hours This course focuses on the history of financial markets, placing emphasis on understanding the differences among various financial institutions, the historical context in which they have continued to innovate throughout history, and the regulatory environment in which they operate. This course unlocks some of the important lessons from history to give the student a historical context to help interpret current events and gain better understanding of the interdependence of finance and its role in the economy. This course leads into How Financial Markets Work. How Financial Markets Work 24 hours This course is an introduction to what constitutes financial markets and how they work: stock markets, bonds, money markets, IPO markets, and the role of interest rates, exchange rates, and risk. A historical overview of London's financial markets will also be given in order to heighten the student's understanding of stock markets and trading in the U.K. The role and types of regulators in the U.K. will be addressed to allow the student to be aware of the contemporary policy and institutional issues in banking and finance based upon a good knowledge of the functions and functioning of the various financial markets in London. Business Methods & Know-How Strategic Management This course is an integrative and interdisciplinary course designed to introduce the concepts, tools, and first principles of strategy formulation and competitive analysis. Students will be exposed to theoretical and real-world examples of the information, analyses, organizational processes, skills, and business judgment managers must use to craft successful strategy. Students will be expected to adopt a methodical approach to effectively evaluating, selecting, and implementing appropriate strategies in various environments. Project Management 1 This course is designed to convey the principles, tools, techniques and methods employed in order to be effective in managing projects and leading the people responsible for executing the tasks that comprise the project. Students will be exposed to both the classical foundations of project management and an array of real-life project problems. Upon completion of this course, students will understand the basic concepts and critical factors of initiating, planning, organizing, controlling, and running a project. An argument will be made against cookie-cutter solutions and priority will be given to the ability to adapt one's project management style to unique project characteristics. Course topics will include: project initiation, project success dimensions, integration, scope, planning, controlling and monitoring, time, cost and risk management, project organization, project teamwork, and project adaptation. 4
5 Analytics for Business Intelligence The aim of this course is to provide the student with an understanding of several analytics tools and to provide some insight into how these tools may be used to analyze complex business problems and arrive at a rational solution. The techniques to be studied are forecasting, linear planning, simulation, and modeling. Real-life cases and data of increasing complexity will be used as a base for problem description, definition, and formulation. The computer will be used extensively throughout the course for mining data and performing calculations necessary for exploitable results. Using these results, emphasis will be placed on the student's ability to interpret and implement. Front Office Soft Skills The hard skills of product literacy and financial acumen alone cannot guarantee success in the financial markets industry. It is now widely recognized that soft skills are becoming an increasingly important criterion for determining which applicant gets the job and the career path trajectory for years to follow. This class will focus on raising awareness of this issue as well as providing key communication skills to help the student become a more effective advisor and presenter. Some theoretical background will be exploited in order to instruct the student, yet the emphasis will be largely based on the goal of getting students to practice techniques to overcome stage fright, improve empathy, and engage more effectively with others. Language Skills and Cultural Literacy Advanced Integrated English This is an advanced, intensive, course intended to improve reading comprehension, oral comprehension, written expression and grammar. Students will be exposed to a variety of media: newspapers, magazines, televised news and the internet. Emphasis will be placed on sophistication, and grammatical correctness, of expression with an aim to increasing student awareness of the need to go beyond Globish English and reach an advanced, and more credible, level of writing and speaking. There will also be a significant part of the course dedicated to public speaking and the development of oral skills in general. Understanding Britain This course is designed to help students gain optimum benefit from their study abroad experience by providing an introduction to various aspects of British life, culture, politics and history. In addition to the classes and excursions each student undertakes an independent study on some aspect of British Life. The course also aims to help students find their bearings and adjust to life in London, which may be very different from what they know. Among the topics included are issues of identity, sovereignty issues, empire, immigration and ethnicity, sport and fashion. 5
