HOW TO USE THIS BOOKLET This booklet contains the information first- and second-year students need to decide what to study in Part II and how to enrol on-line for your second and third year modules. Section 1 describes what you must know and do in order to enrol on-line and to have your enrolments formally approved by the Department. Section 2 describes all Part II schemes of study involving History, and their rules and guidelines. You should consult the section relevant to you with care, so that you enrol on appropriate combinations of modules. Section 3 provides a list of all Part II modules offered by the History Department, together with the names of the tutors concerned. Module descriptions are available in the History Part II Module Guides and the university s on-line module catalogue. The Department can only confirm the availability of modules on a year by year basis, so if you are especially committed to taking a particular HIST2xx module and it is available you are strongly advised to take it in your second year. As the number of students taking history is high, some modules are heavily oversubscribed, and the Department applies a quota or limit to each of its modules. To choose your modules and enrol for your Part II scheme of study you should: CHECK YOUR SCHEME OF STUDY in Section 2 to ensure that you are aware of what modules the regulations allow or require you to study. SELECT YOUR MODULES from the lists provided in Section 3. FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS ON ENROLMENT PROCEDURES outlined in Section 1, and those for online enrolment provided by the Undergraduate Student Registry. SOME KEY TERMS SCHEME OF STUDY A degree scheme such as History major or History and Religious Studies combined major ; any acceptable package of modules which total 240 credits. MODULE A discrete course with a name and mnemonic (e.g. HIST204). CREDITS The term used to describe the weighting of modules taken to form Part II. Each History module is worth either 15 credits (HIST2xx modules), 30 credits (HIST300 Dissertation) or 60 credits (HIST3xx Special Subjects; currently taken by History (including Medieval and Renaissance Studies) major and combined major students in their final year). Part II comprises of 240 credits in total, made up of 120 credits in each of Years 2 and 3. UNIT A term previously used to describe the weighting of modules taken to form Part II. The History Department now refers to credits alone but we have included a conversion table in Appendix 1 at the end of this booklet to assist you with the enrolment process should other Departments still refer to units. CORE MODULE A compulsory module taken by a cohort of students as a requirement of their degree scheme. Core modules aim to develop foundational general skills about the study of the discipline of history and the curriculum as a whole (e.g. HIST250). 2

SECTION 1: ENROLMENT PROCEDURES 1 ENROLMENT PROCEDURE This section tells you what to do, where to go, and when, in order to enrol for your choice of modules. IF YOU ARE A CURRENT FIRST-YEAR STUDENT, THEN GO TO SECTION 1.1 IF YOU ARE A CURRENT SECOND-YEAR STUDENT, THEN GO TO: SECTION 1.2 (ALL HISTORY MAJOR AND COMBINED MAJOR DEGREES); or SECTION 1.3 (TAKING HISTORY AS A MINOR SUBECT). 1.1 PART I HISTORY STUDENTS At the beginning of the Summer Term (in , just before the start of Week 21, i.e. Friday 15 April), you will enrol on the Part II modules you intend to study in your second year. This is done using the University's on-line web-based enrolment system, about which you should have already received information from the Undergraduate Student Registry. This section gives you the information you need to select appropriate modules, from the many available to you, in order to pursue a recognised scheme of study involving History. If you are planning to change your current scheme of study in any way you should read the box overleaf and try to complete the process as soon as possible and certainly before the end of on-line enrolment, that is, by Tuesday 26 April You must complete your on-line enrolment between Friday 15 April and Tuesday 26 April Your enrolment options will be based on your current scheme of study. What follows is intended to help those of you planning to enrol on History modules at Part II and, in particular, those proposing to take History, Medieval and Renaissance Studies, or one of the combined major schemes of study involving History. All schemes involving History place certain restrictions on the combinations of modules on which you can enrol. Since you yourself will be enrolling on-line, you are advised to read this booklet, and to attend the departmental talk on Wednesday 16 March, 13:00, in the Bowland Main Lecture Theatre, in order to make the best choices and to avoid enrolling incorrectly. You are welcome to approach any tutor at any convenient time to seek help or information. The Department, however, is also running an enrolment counselling programme. 3

SECTION 1: ENROLMENT PROCEDURES CHANGE OF SCHEME OF STUDY If you are planning to change your scheme of study, for example from a History major or combined major to some other scheme, you should try to complete the process as soon as possible and certainly before the end of on-line enrolment, that is, by Tuesday 26 April You will need to obtain the History department's approval and complete a change of major form. Forms are available as a download from the Undergraduate Student Registry web page. To obtain approval you should see in the first instance the Administrator for Part II History, Laura Hogarth, in B114, Bowland Main ENROLMENT TALK & COUNSELLING PART II ENROLMENT BRIEFING TALK: WEDNESDAY 16 MARCH A briefing talk will be given by Dr John Welshman, the Director of Part II Studies, in the Bowland Main Lecture Theatre at 13.00, in which he will discuss the choice of modules in the various major and combined major schemes on offer. 10 SECTION 1: ENROLMENT PROCEDURES OPPORTUNITIES FOR WORK PLACEMENT Work Placements HIST299 (15 credits) From Education to Employment: History Work Placement Module History Majors and Combined Majors have the option in their 2 nd Year of taking a 15 credit-bearing Work Placement Module in a heritage setting. These range from prominent multi-site organisations to small independents, and include for example art galleries, museums, the National Trust etc. Students on work placements might, for example, find themselves analysing data on visitor experiences; improving the description of collections; writing text for exhibitions; and researching world-class collections. The module aims to foster awareness of, and reflection on, career opportunities in the heritage sector and elsewhere. It is assessed through coursework only, specifically a portfolio and a reflective report. Enrolment on the History Work Placement module, HIST299, is managed separately from the on-line enrolment process will begin in the latter half of the Summer Term in , this academic year. The placement is classed as a Lent Term module although, depending on the provider, it may start during Michaelmas Term and end/take place during the Easter vacation. The History Department will contact all eligible students regarding this opportunity in the latter half of the Summer Term with more details, including the application process. In the meantime, students who think they may wish to take the History Work Placement module should enrol as normal, but also express their interest by ing Becky Sheppard r.sheppard1@lancaster.ac.uk (Becky is the History Department s PG Co-ordinator, but she also has responsibility for aspects of the Department s placement activities, whether Undergraduate or Postgraduate) OPPORTUNITIES TO STUDY ABROAD EXCHANGE YEAR / STUDY ABROAD Part I students should be aware that the Department also participates enthusiastically in Exchange Programmes with universities in other countries. During their second year, such exchange students in effect do their second year modules abroad and then return to do a normal third year here. Students interested in this possibility should contact Dr John Welshman via [ j.welshman@lancaster.ac.uk]. They should be aware that although fees and living expenses (room and board) are exchanged, the programme still involves extra expenditure that must come from the participants. Current 1 st year students intending to undertake study abroad in their 2 nd year should note that their participation the exchange programme is only officially confirmed after Part II on-line enrolment has taken place and therefore that they must enrol on-line for their Part II modules as if they will be remaining in Lancaster. Once the Department has received confirmation that they are indeed on study abroad, their enrolment record is then amended at the start of the academic year to reflect this. This serves to ensure that your enrolments are in place should for unforeseeable and/or unavoidable reasons the exchange does not go ahead HISTORY AS A MINOR SUBJECT Students who have passed Part I History may take up to 60 credits of History as a minor subject during their second and third years. Such students choose from the list of HIST2xx modules on offer. Students who have not taken Part I History but who have a demonstrable interest in History, or whose prospective History modules relate to modules taken as part of their major subject(s), may be eligible to take up to 30 credits or, exceptionally, up to 60 credits as a minor. They must discuss their eligibility with Dr John Welshman, Director of Undergraduate Studies, before they enrol. Students taking History as a minor subject at Part II should follow the enrolment procedures of their major, enrolling department. 8

SECTION 1: ENROLMENT PROCEDURES 1.2 SECOND YEAR HISTORY MAJORS AND COMBINED MAJORS Current Year 2 History Major and Combined Major students may or may not have enrolled provisionally on Year 3 modules in the Summer Term of Year 1, depending on the guidance of your administering department. You are, however, required to confirm or, in some cases if you wish to, change your enrolments. Remember: a Year 3 module you enrolled on provisionally in the Summer Term of Year 1 may no longer be running and therefore no longer available for enrolment. You must follow the procedures below ON-LINE ENROLMENT: FRIDAY 15 APRIL to TUESDAY 26 APRIL You must enroll/re-enrol on-line for your chosen Year 3 modules during this period, preferably as soon as possible. The on-line enrolment screens will be available via the Internet with links from the University and Student Registry home pages. To access the screens you will use your standard network username and password. Once you have entered them you will be taken to your record, and a series of screens will enable you to choose modules and to confirm enrolments. During the period there is no limit on the number of times that you are able to enter the screens and amend your enrolments. After Tuesday 26 April the screens will be 'read-only'. Before you access the on-line screens, the Undergraduate Registry will have entered the modules you may have enrolled on at the end of Year 1. These may include compulsory modules that you will not be able to change. For example, the dissertation module HIST300 is compulsory for all History majors. History Major and Combined Major students should note that they will NOT see displayed the Special Subject allocated to them and posted in the Department at the start of the Summer Term. Instead, you MUST re-enrol on the generic or dummy Special Subject HIST301. The Department will subsequently enrol you on your allocated Special Subject in place of HIST301 before the process of signing off enrolment, i.e. checking and approving your on-line enrolments, takes place on THURSDAY 5 MAY (see below). Changes to these Special Subject enrolments can only be made after consulting the Department (see below), and can only be made by the Department. You are expected to be familiar with this booklet, especially Section 2: Regulations for Part II schemes of study. The on-line screens display some rules and information about your scheme of study, but are intended as a guide only. They also contain some instructions in the main text and there is further guidance in the left-hand margin including links to a help screen. They may not display detailed descriptions of modules. You should therefore refer to this guide and ensure you have read the module descriptions, which can be found in the History Part II Module Guides (distributed online) and on the Department s website. The process expects you to know the structure of your scheme of study and the content of your preferred modules. 9

SECTION 1: ENROLMENT PROCEDURES SPECIAL SUBJECTS (60 CREDIT MODULE) Current Year 2 students on the History Major (including Medieval and Renaissance Studies) and all Combined Majors with History are required to take a Special Subject module (60 credits) in their third year. Such students will already have received information from the Department about this aspect of the enrolment process. In summary, you are asked to indicate your first, second and third choice of Special Subject in the Lent Term of Year 2. A provisional list of special subject groups, compiled from this information, will be posted on the noticeboard in the History mixing bay on Monday 18 April. As far as possible, we will have allocated students to the subject of their first or second choice. However, we have to ensure that no one module is over-subscribed and a special subject may not run if the number of students enrolled is fewer than six. Any students who seek to change their Special Subject allocation must consult Dr John Welshman, Director of Part II Studies, in his room (B140) between 2.00pm and 4.00pm on Monday 18 April. 1.3 SECOND YEAR STUDENTS TAKING HISTORY AS A MINOR SUBJECT Students who have passed Part I History may take up to 60 credits of History as a minor subject during their second and third years. Students taking History as a minor subject at Part II should follow the enrolment procedures of your major, enrolling department. 12

SECTION 2: REGULATIONS FOR PART II SCHEMES 2 REGULATIONS FOR PART II SCHEMES OF STUDY 2.1. HISTORY SINGLE MAJOR DEGREES The History Major can be taken as either a 240 credits (all in History) or 180 credits History Major (with a minimum of 180 credits in History and maximum of 60 credits as a minor) or anywhere in between. Intended minor subjects can include amongst others: Economics, English, European Languages and Cultures, Geography, Philosophy, Psychology, Religious Studies, Politics, Sociology. The History Major can also be taken including Study Abroad. Whichever scheme of study is chosen, 120 credits are studied in each year and History Major students normally take at least 90 credits in History each of Year 2 and Year 3. The structures of these schemes are presented overleaf. The History Major offers a variety of modules that provide students with the opportunity to gain practical experience of the intellectual benefits of studying the subject over an extended period of time and also the study the history of more than one society or culture. In order to obtain a well-rounded historical education, students should choose a combination of history modules that vary in time, place and approach. The History Major scheme includes four kinds of modules: Core Year 2 modules (HIST250 and HIST251) Optional HIST2xx (15 credit modules); Special Subjects (60 credit module); and HIST300 Dissertation (30 credit module). For History Major (incl. Medieval & Renaissance Studies) students there are two compulsory (core) modules in Year 2: HIST250 and HIST251 (15 credits each). And also two compulsory modules in Year 3: the History Dissertation HIST300 (30 credits) and a History Special Subject (60 credits). For enrolment purposes the History Special Subject will appear on the system under the dummy module code HIST301; this will remain on the system at this stage and you will enroll on your actual History Special Subject in the Lent Term of your 2 nd year. The kinds of modules are as follows: CORE modules (HIST250 and HIST251) have to be taken by all History Major students in Year 2. HIST250 The Nature and Practice of History is designed to introduce you to theoretical and methodological aspects of the discipline of history, with the help of particular historical case studies. HIST251 Writing History: Questions, Methods, Conclusions is a module intended to equip you with the skills necessary for the inception, planning, and preparation for a major historical project. The module will support the work of HIST300 (Dissertation module) taken in Year 3. HIST2xx (i.e. modules prefixed by 2 ) are 15-credit modules. These modules are designed to deepen an understanding of change and development over long periods of time and how such changes should be analysed and/or to deepen an understanding of the causes and consequences of historical events by addressing key historical themes. The issues and themes chosen for study vary considerably from module to module in this range. SPECIAL SUBJECTS (i.e. modules prefixed by 3 ) are compulsory 60-credit modules taken in Year 3 in which a given issue or topic, usually of limited chronology, is studied in depth. Special Subjects are studied from selected contemporary sources, linked to secondary material, and enable students to get to the

SECTION 2: REGULATIONS FOR PART II SCHEMES threshold of research knowledge on the topic. The Special Subject enables students to build on skills acquired in their first- and second-year modules. The History DISSERTATION (HIST300) is a 30-credit module which is compulsory for History Majors (including Medieval and Renaissance Studies). The Dissertation is taken in Year 3, but teaching on this module begins during the Lent and Summer Terms of Year 2. A student s Dissertation topic ought normally to lie in an area of History different from that of his/her Special Subject. History Majors participating in the North America exchanges are required to take HIST300, although they will be absent from Lancaster for meetings with supervisors in the Summer Term of Year 2. They should therefore contact Laura Hogarth in B114 in the first instance for advice on the alternative procedures in place.

SECTION 2: REGULATIONS FOR PART II SCHEMES 2.2. CONSORTIAL SCHEMES OF STUDY MEDIEVAL AND RENAISSANCE STUDIES Students on this consortial degree scheme should seek individual consultations from the Director of Undergraduate Studies, Dr John Welshman (Room B140, Bowland Main). They will need to take 240 credits in total from appropriate History modules and Cross-disciplinary modules set out overleaf, subject to availability. Students will take at least 150 credits in History. YEAR 2 YEAR credits, minimum of 60 in History 120 credits, minimum of 90 in History HIST250 & HIST251 (30 credits total) 90 credits from: HIST2xx modules (minimum 30 credits) and Cross-disciplinary modules (maximum 60 credits) 1 HIST300 Dissertation (30 credits) 1 Special Subject module (60 credits) 30 credits from HIST2xx modules / Cross-disciplinary modules Cross-disciplinary Modules running in ENGL202 Renaissance to Restoration: English Literature, ENGL306 Shakespeare PPR201 History of Philosophy (30 credits) It is important that availability of modules is checked with individual departments.

SECTION 2: REGULATIONS FOR PART II SCHEMES 2.3. COMBINED MAJOR SCHEMES For History Combined Major students there is one compulsory (core) module in Year 2: HIST250, and also one compulsory module in Year 3/Final Year: a History Special Subject (60 credits)*. For such students, the History Special Subject will therefore form the entire History aspect of their 3 rd Year/Final year of study. You will select your specific History Special Subject module in the Lent Term of Year 2 and the Department will enrol you on it. For enrolment purposes the History Special Subject will appear on the system under the dummy module code HIST301; this will remain on the system at this stage and you will enroll on your actual History Special Subject in the Lent Term of your 2 nd year. * From , History Combined Major students can opt to take a History Dissertation (30-credits) INSTEAD of a History Special Subject (60 credits) in their 3 rd /Final year; but IF you choose to do so you MUST also take HIST251 in your 2 nd year. This is because HIST251 (taken in Year 2) is a pre-requisite for the HIST300 Dissertation (taken in Year 3/Final Year). Please note that, in order to ensure you have enough History credits on your enrolment profile, if you opt to take a History Dissertation instead of a History Special Subject you MUST also take two HIST2xx modules (15 credits each) in your 3 rd /Final Year, chosen a year hence at enrolment when in your 2 nd year. The enrolment system is set up to default to History Combined Major students undertaking a History Special Subject (HIST301) in their 3 rd /Final Year so, IF you do wish to undertake the History Dissertation (HIST300) in your 3 rd /Final Year, instead of a History Special Subject, then you must go and see your administering department and ask them to change your record manually and enroll you on HIST300 in your 3 rd /Final Year AND HIST251 in your 2 nd year. It is appreciated that it is early days to ask History Combined Major students to commit to the decision of whether to take a History Special Subject v History Dissertation in their 3 rd /Final Year at this stage in their 1 st Year. As such, you will be provided with the opportunity to confirm your intentions in relation to this at the start of the Lent Term of your 2 nd Year, but it is important that you indicate your preference either way at this stage during this on-line enrolment period. Please note that these requirements do NOT include the Triple Major: History, Philosophy and Politics. YEAR 2 YEAR 3/Final Year 120 credits, 60 in History 120 credits, 60 in History HIST250 (15 credits) HIST251 (15 credits) IF taking HIST300 Dissertation in Year 3/Final Year 3 HIST2xx modules (45 credits) OR 2 HIST2xx modules (30 credits) IF taking HIST251 1 Special Subject module (60 credits) OR 1 HIST300 Dissertation (30 credits) AND 2 HIST2xx modules (30 credits) 60 credits in other Major 60 credits in other Major

SECTION 2: REGULATIONS FOR PART II SCHEMES ENGLISH LITERATURE AND HISTORY The History component of this combined degree scheme will normally comprise the equivalent of 120 credits in History, 60 in each year. HIST250 is a compulsory (core) module taken in the 2 nd Year. History combined majors are also required to undertake a History Special Subject module (60 credits) in Year 3/Final Year (selected in the Lent Term of Year 2). From students on combined majors with History will be able to choose to take HIST300, the History Dissertation module (30 credits), along with two HIST2xx modules (15 credits each), in place of a History Special Subject module (60 credits) in Year 3/Final Year. Such students MUST also take HIST251 in their 2 nd Year; a compulsory pre-requisite for the HIST300 Dissertation. There are also 120 credits in English: in the English component, ENGL201 (30 credits) is compulsory in the second year. Apart from this requirement there are no further stipulations about course choices. Students, however, should choose their courses with the aim of creating a coherent scheme of study across the two subjects of the degree. English and History Combined major students may, if they wish, take either 2 or 4 English 15-credit (half-unit) modules in their third year. During online enrolment students wishing to take 2 ENGL half-units should enrol for ENGL398. Students wishing to take 4 ENGL half-unit modules should enrol for both ENGL398 and ENGL399. These are generic mnemonics to indicate your intention to take English half-unit modules. Once online enrolment has closed students who have enrolled to take English half-unit modules must visit the Department of English and Creative Writing on either Wednesday 4 th May or Thursday 5 th May to choose their modules. This combined major scheme is administered by the Department of English and Creative Writing and students should consult with them in the first instance and follow the enrolment procedures of your major, enrolling department. 24 SECTION 3: PART II MODULES 3 PART II MODULES IN HISTORY 3.1 AVAILABILITY OF MODULES The following pages list Part II History modules running in It is important to stress that the Department can only confirm the availability of modules on a year-by-year basis; so, if you are especially committed to taking a particular module and it is available, you are strongly advised to take it in your second year. Please note that the Department aims to ensure that details of availability are as accurate as possible and makes every effort to give students early warning where a module will not be available in a particular year due to staff research leave or other causes. Students should note that unforeseen circumstances sometimes result in late changes in module availability. Exceptionally, some modules may not run if there is insufficient enrolment. Furthermore, quotas will be imposed if demand is excessive. 3.2 QUOTAS It is Departmental policy to keep enrolments on individual modules at an appropriate level to achieve the best balance between retaining student choice and flexibility in degree programmes and to ensure greater quality, variety and parity of the student learning experience through reducing pressure on learning resources, on seminar group numbers, assessing work and assisting individual students, to the benefit of both staff and students. Consequently the Department applies a quota or limit to each of its modules. Quotas for HIST2xx modules are implemented at the point of on-line enrolment, essentially on a first come, first serve basis. When you enrol on-line, the system will inform you of how many places are available on a specific module or when a module is full. As on-line enrolment takes place over a period of 1 1/2 weeks, it is possible that places may become available on previously full modules if students re-enrol for alternative modules. However, students do tend to enrol once they have made their decision about which modules they wish to study. You are therefore strongly advised to think carefully about which modules you wish to enrol on, to ensure you understand the rules for your scheme of study (and if a current 1 st year student to take advantage of the Department s enrolment counselling programme - see page 5) and enrol as soon as possible during the on-line enrolment period. Whilst quotas inevitably restrict the number of students who can enrol on a module, students should not be unduly concerned about module availability. The quota limits are set so as to ensure that all students can be accommodated in terms of being able to take the number of credits required according to the rules of the degree schemes and students are automatically pre-enrolled on any compulsory modules. Quotas are reasonably high and the demand for individual Part II History modules tends not to be above these limits. Further, whilst the Department cannot guarantee module availability, those HIST2xx modules that are not available for enrolment in one year are often available in the other.

SECTION 3: PART II MODULES History Major (including Medieval and Renaissance Studies) and Combined Major students are provided with further details of the rationale for quotas and the additional enrolment process for Special Subjects during the Lent Term of their 2 nd Year. 3.3 CORE Second-Year Modules (HIST250 & HIST251) There are two compulsory (core) modules in Year 2. HIST250 The Nature and Practice of History is compulsory for all History Majors/Medieval and Renaissance Studies and Combined Major students. HIST250 offers History students (in both Single and Combined Major degree schemes) an introduction to the practice of the discipline of history as a whole: its good and bad practices, its methodologies and different genres, its relation to both past and present, its uses of primary and secondary sources. While this is a module that focuses on the theory of the discipline and skills required for advanced historical study in Part II, it has been designed in a way that allows a more engaging delivery. To that effect, each broad theme (inception of enquiry, historical/historiographical field, sources and evidence, audience) is discussed in relation to carefully selected historical case studies. In addition, each thematic lecture will also make a contribution to the students' cognitive development in key areas of the History curriculum, with a good balance between ancient/medieval, earlymodern, and modern themes, as well as with a spread of topics from European and global history. HIST251 Writing History: Questions, Methods, Conclusions is a compulsory pre-requisite for the History Dissertation (HIST300 taken in Year 3). It is therefore compulsory for History Majors/Medieval & Renaissance Studies students, and also for those History Combined Major students who opt to take the History Dissertation HIST300. HIST251 intends to make prospective dissertation students more aware of the cognitive and analytical processes that they need to follow in order to define their future dissertation topic, construct a detailed research proposal, conduct a reflexive feasibility study for their project, present their preliminary findings, and respond to feedback from experts in their prospective field of research. More broadly, the module aims to equip you with the necessary skills to design any research proposal for an extended project, locate it in its relevant historiographical field, test its viability, scope available sources, and produce outlines, detailed structures, and bibliographies that will help them in the process of conducting advanced historical research. The module makes use of both standard and innovative forms of delivery (including an intensive 'Dissertation Conference' early in the Summer Term). While running in parallel with HIST300 (and being independent from it), HIST251 is designed to support and enhance it. 3.4 OPTIONAL HIST2xx Modules (15 Credits) Students can take any combination of HIST2xx modules as long as it adheres to the rules for the scheme of study (see Section 2) and University regulations in relation to assessment type (see Section 3.7) and adds up to 120 credits in each of Years 2 and 3. Students are strongly encouraged to take an equal balance of credits across the Michaelmas and Lent terms, i.e. 60 credits per term, in their own interests and it is Departmental policy that students on degree schemes administered by History should NOT enrol on modules with an unequal balance across terms of more than 15 credits i.e. students can take a total of 45 credits in one term and 75 credits in another but no less or more. Students should note that any issues in relation to balance of workload across terms will not be accepted as reasons for any claim of mitigating circumstances in relation to poor performance. 3.5 DISSERTATION (HIST300) All History Major (including Medieval and Renaissance Studies) students must take the HIST300 Dissertation (30 credit) module in Year 3. From , History Combined Major students can opt to take a History Dissertation (30-credits) INSTEAD of a History Special Subject (60 credits) in their 3 rd /Final year; but IF you choose to do so you MUST also take HIST251 in your 2 nd year. See Section 2.3 for further details.
