1 Governor s Career Technical Academy at the Arlington Career Center What are you doing to align the high school experience to the graduate s workplace readiness? GCTAA partners with local industry, business and post-secondary organizations to provide students with related industry credentials, dual enrollment opportunities and work-based learning experiences: Auto Tech students may earn Workplace Readiness and ASE certifications; dual enrollment credits with NVCC; and 8 week paid summer job internships at local auto dealerships. Emergency Medical Tech students may earn CPR/First Aid credential and EMT-b license; dual enrollment credits with NVCC; and experience 1 patient contact hours through ambulance ridealongs and emergency room rotations at local hospitals. Early Childhood Education students may earn Para-Pro certification; dual enrollment credits with NVCC; internship hours at the Career Center Infant Care/Pre-School and Henry Elementary School. How much planning and outreach had to be done to build partnerships with businesses and higher education? The superintendent, principal, director, and teachers meet with local businesses and workforce industry organizations to develop work based opportunities for the students. In partnership with the Executive Director of the Workforce Innovation Opportunity Act, Dave Remick, current in demand jobs are identified and related local industry organizations and businesses are matched as potential partners with existing Career and Technical Education programs. Individual meetings and focus groups connect local industry organizations and businesses with teachers and administrators. Partnerships are further developed with class visits, job shadowing, and may culminate in an onsite extended internship or work-based experience. Through the NVCC dual enrollment liaison and in house NVCC career counselor new dual enrollment courses are added each year to match the identified workforce areas that are currently in demand and are projected to grow in the future. How would these practices inform and develop a Profile of a Graduate? Industry credentials validate the skills required for specific career pathways; Dual enrollment credits provide students with a jumpstart to post-secondary education; Dual enrollment is a cost-saving opportunity for students who pursue higher education; Work-based learning equips students with authentic experiences which develop both their soft skills, hard skills and a passion for continued learning. What policy levers should the Board use/revise to achieve this? Allow each district flexibility, within a clear over-arching structure, to move forward and progress at a pace that works for them Identify changes in SOA and SOQ to increase district-level flexibility concerning o Staffing and hiring o Awarding of credit o Curriculum development o Alternative assessments Provide tax incentives for businesses to participate in work-based learning opportunities for students. 1
