1 Curriculum Vitae Joffre Swait, PhD Director: Academic Research Professor Institute for Choice, UniSA Business School The University of South Australia Business Address: Level 13, 140 Arthur Street North Sydney NSW 2060 Telephone: Internet: Professor Swait received his Ph.D in 1984 from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, specialising in modelling discrete choice behaviour, particularly with respect to choice set formation. Complementing his academic achievements, Professor Swait has extensive consulting experience in North and South America, where he conducted consumer behaviour modelling in such diverse areas as transportation, telecommunications, packaged goods, financial services, computer hardware, and tourism. Professor Swait has written for leading academic journals such as Transportation Research Record, Journal of Marketing Research, Marketing Science, Journal of Consumer Research, Journal of Environmental Economics and Management, Organizational Behaviour and Human Decision Processes, Journal of Mathematical Psychology, among others. He currently serves on editorial boards for the Journal of Choice Modelling, Journal of Marketing Research, Journal of Retailing and Consumer Services, Marketing Science, Transportation and Transportation Research Part B. AREAS OF EXPERTISE Professor Swait is acknowledged as global expert in choice set formation and a leading scholar in choice modelling research. His particular areas of expertise include choice modelling methods, stated preference methods (SP), choice data combination methods and brand equity measurement and management. Emphasis on the use of discrete choice analysis for prediction of consumer behavior. Cambridge Systematics, Inc. (July 1991-Feb 1992) Senior Associate. Participation in various marketing research (conjoint choice, market segmentation), transportation (toll road diversion) and energy (conservation program impact evaluation) projects, performing statistical data analysis of various types. Also responsible for questionnaire and experimental designs for conjoint choice studies, which were analyzed using discrete choice models. One of five partners in this consulting firm, founded in Managed projects in simulation modeling (Carajas railroad) and internal software development efforts. Responsible for business development, writing of proposals and administrative duties. Instituto de Pesquisas Tecnologicas do Estado de Sao Paulo S/A (Technological Research Institute of the State of Sao Paulo) (Sept 1988-Mar 1990) Senior Researcher, Transportation Engineering Group, Division of Economics and Systems Engineering. Hired with the specific mission of redefining and redirecting the Group's research efforts. Participated in two research projects: (1) identification of the information processing needs of urban bus operating companies through in-depth case studies; (2) vehicle routing and scheduling methods for problems with time windows. (Sept Mar 1990) DisBra - Distribuidora Brasileira de Produtos S/A (Food Distribution Company) (Sept 1987-July 1988) Chief of Planning and Analysis, Logistics Division. Responsible for the functional definition of computer systems for the operating sectors of the division, supervision of software development and system implementation. Conducted analyses of distribution fleet investments and warehouse infrastructure and equipment decisions. Interim Logistics Manager for Central Area (Jan 1988-July 1988). Responsible for following operations: inventory control, warehousing, order processing and physical distribution. The operation involved a throughput of about 10,000 metric tons/month with a total of 150 employees, covering the states of Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais, Espirito Santo, Distrito Federal, Goias, Mato Grosso do Sul, Mato Grosso, Rondonia and Amazonas (in all, an area covering more than 50% of Brazil and including about 50% of its population). Also responsible for freight rate negotiations with trucking companies. BRAP Engenheiros Consultores Ltda. (Oct 1986-Aug 1987) Software Development Manager. Custom software development projects for cargo and passenger transportation companies (way bills management information system, fleet maintenance control). IPEA - Instituto de Planejamento Economico e Social (federal government research institute) (Aug 1985-Sept 1986) Consultant to develop diesel oil demand models for the urban freight distribution sector in Brazil. Based on sector census information, a translog cost function was used to test government policy options. Consultant to execute a project entitled "Characterization of Short-Run Logistical Decisions in Industrial and Commercial Companies", in which the interrelationship between transport mode choice and shipment size was examined through the simultaneous estimation of a discrete logit mode choice model and continuous shipment size model based on an inventory- theoretic approach. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Aug 1980-July 1984) Research Assistant, Transportation Systems Division, Dept. of Civil Engineering. Worked on the GEIPOT/MIT Technical Cooperation Program, which had the objective of introducing advanced transportation planning techniques in Brazil.
