However, the term appears to have remained in the shadows as far as job listings are concerned. This was the finding of the DEKRA Academy s latest Job Market Report. Further observations of the Job Market Report, which has traced developments in job listings for a number of years, are that employers in healthcare, the electronics industry and retail in particular are currently increasing their search for new employees. In addition to positive economic sentiment, trends such as the rising average age of the population, the change in information and consumer behaviour as well as the further digitalisation in certain occupational groups are making themselves felt. 12,649 job listings were evaluated for the latest DEKRA Job Market Report. Healthcare accounted for a striking number of vacancies (13.8%). The electrical industry was in second place this year (13.1%). Furthermore, the recruitment drive was particularly high in retail during the survey period (9.5%). Sales: candidates with strong communication skills in demand In particular, call centres focusing on customer service are currently seeking a large number of new employees. In addition, customer service representatives, customer consultants and heads of sales also feature among the top ten professions, with candidates being able to choose from a particularly large number of job vacancies in the electrical industry. Consultancy firms require considerably fewer candidates with a business administration qualification this year. Healthcare: shortage of doctors diagnosed Healthcare professionals and nurses have replaced economists in the ranking, moving into second place. 2 higher than ever; they only just failed to make the leap into the top ten professions (11th place). As one in four doctors is aged 55 or older, this shortage may intensify further. In contrast, there was a surprising fall in vacancies for carers for the elderly this year. This is probably a one-time effect, as there is no denying the rising average age in the demographic development of the population as a whole. This is also noticeable in the number of vacancies for professions such as acoustician. 3 Best career prospects for software developers IT professions make up the second highest share of total job vacancies and this year two specialisations appear in the top ten ranking. Software developers are especially in demand with almost 30% of all IT job vacancies directed at them. In light of increasing digitalisation, the job situation for software developers should remain very good. The significantly higher demand for business information systems professionals may be attributable to this trend too: one in ten IT jobs candidates require equal knowledge of both IT and business (2014: 5.7%). Engineers are also one of the three most sought-after occupational groups, although their share of the professional field of development has decreased for the second year in succession. Electrical engineers have somewhat fewer vacancies to choose from (28.6% of engineer positions). However, demand for candidates specialising in mechanical and automobile engineering has risen by almost 4% (26.2%). Retail benefits from strong consumer confidence German consumers are in a buying mood, which is having a positive effect on the job situation in retail. Retail sales staff are among the three professional groups whose shares have grown the most: they are back in the top ten for the first time since In contrast to this, consumer confidence is not making itself felt in hospitality: almost all specialists in this area have fewer job vacancies to choose from than in the previous year. Cooks are the only exception with an increase of 13.3%. Drop in the proportion of careers in electronics Electronics technicians remain the stars in the job market for technical skilled trades. Nevertheless, their share of the professional field has fallen to its lowest point. Currently, job vacancies are even declining slightly in mechatronics, a shortage occupation. In future, employers for electrical skilled trades will frequently be temporary employment agencies (29.3%): during the survey period, companies either required a large number of new employees quickly or were not certain whether the current very positive economic situation is here to stay. Megatrends and the development of professional fields The influence of certain trends can be seen in the development of the professional fields over the last eight years. One such trend is the change in information and consumer behaviour as a result of the internet: in storage and transport logistics, for example, the trend line is pointing upwards. On the other hand, the proportion Page 3
4 of job vacancies in financial and investment consulting has been in decline for several years. Digitalisation, which is pervading ever more corporate processes, is also responsible for the IT professions increasing share of the job market. Developments such as Industry 4.0 will change the working world to an extent and at a speed that are greater than many people can imagine today, said Jörg Mannsperger, member of the Management Board of DEKRA SE and Managing Director of the DEKRA Academy, when presenting the report to parliamentarians in Berlin. Nevertheless, many companies are concentrating only on the technical aspects of digitalisation. But one thing is certain: the change will affect specialists right across all hierarchy and qualification levels.
