4 06 07 Welcome to the Full-time MBA programme at Manchester Business School The MBA is a truly international experience and I ve had the pleasure of working with some of brightest individuals from almost 30 nationalities. A Manchester MBA gives you more than just a thorough understanding of the latest business theory. It gives you the chance to put that theory into practice. Through live projects working with real companies on real briefs you get the chance to reaffirm the skills you re learning throughout the course. The MBA is a truly international experience and I ve had the pleasure of working with some of the brightest individuals from almost 30 nationalities. The opportunities afforded by the small class size are very beneficial you can t go unnoticed and you re not lost in a sea of individuals. The extensive extracurricular offering is so strong, with students going off to competitions on an almost weekly basis. Although these are optional they really complement the course. Looking back on my journey I m proud to have been part of the team that reached the European finals of the Venture Capital Investment Competition. Manchester is a wonderful city it s only 20 minutes from the countryside but retains a real city feel. It offers everything you would expect from a vibrant European city music, food, heritage, theatre and culture. Sport unites the city and the students and makes it feel like home. The MBA is the beginning of a journey that has transformed my thinking and I now feel equipped to make informed choices about my future career path. My eyes have been opened to new roles and broader horizons. Next year it could be you. Reid Howard MBA President, Class of 2014

10 16 19 MBS Full-time MBA Projects Original thinking, truly applied. The key strength of the Manchester MBA programme lies in the projects. Live projects, in which students have the chance to work with real companies on real briefs, are a mile apart from the case studies and simulated projects on offer at other schools. The Manchester MBA represents a safe and controlled environment to apply your learnings in a way that tests academic theory. My previous experience of education is that you re left to apply theoretical learning after graduation not so at MBS! We believe you can only learn by doing. From day one you will work on consultancy projects with real clients. Our unique, hands-on approach to learning gives you more client-facing hours than any other MBA course nearly six months worth so you can test theories in real-world situations and stay connected to business. You will benefit from working with a diverse range of local, national and international clients, from not-for-profit organisations to global blue chips. You ll gain first-hand experience of the rewards and challenges of working as a team on real business issues and bidding against other teams for your final project. Plus, with every project you work on, you re building up a strong network of international business contacts that could have a real impact on your future career. That s the Manchester Method. 6 Months 600 Hours 30% of your time 4 Minimum client companies Reid Howard Class of 2014, MBA President The projects are designed to bring the best out of the students, to bring you out of your comfort zone, through applied learning in the workplace. The very first project I worked on was for a not-for-profit organisation. We acted as consultants for the client, who were actually facing similar challenges to ones I have experienced in a professional capacity. Learning can t get more hands on than that. Kelly Higgins Class of 2014

11 22 23 The Not-for-Profit Project It s not all about multinational conglomerates we want your MBA to broaden your perspective, open your eyes to different ways of working, take you out of your comfort zone and put you in new and challenging environments. During term one you will start working on your first practical task a live consultancy project with a local, not-for-profit organisation, or with a larger company on corporate social responsibility or sustainability projects. This is your first opportunity to work in a team with your fellow students, giving you a good introduction to the local business environment. Whether you are working with an amateur boxing club, a community café or a cancer support group, this unique project will have a big impact on your thinking and could make a real difference to people s lives. This is your chance to use your skills to give something back to the community. Recent projects include: Action for Sustainable Living Age Concern Air Ambulance After Adoption Fire and Rescue Service National Football Museum Foundation for Peace Henshaws Society for Blind People National Trust The People s History Museum Victim Support YMCA Manchester Aid for Children Prison Advice and Care Trust National Football Museum maximising commercial potential The National Football Museum is home to the world s greatest football collections. An MBA team worked to develop a strategy for the development of the Museum s Hall of Fame, to significantly raise its profile and maximise its commercial potential. They brought an international perspective and fresh ideas, challenging previous assumptions. The team gained an understanding of a major third sector cultural organisation, knowing their recommendations will have a direct impact on the organisation. The Not-for-Profit project gave us exposure to an unconventional business environment, challenged our individual perspectives and made us find solutions that played to all of the strengths in the team. The learning curve was immense, but we got to work with, and generate results for, the prestigious National Football Museum and be part of UK football innovation history. Not-for-Profit Project Team Class of 2013 The group delivered an excellent strategy for the development of our Hall of Fame, which we will be implementing over the next few years. Kevin Moore Director, National Football Museum

12 MBS Full-time MBA The UK Consultancy Project The UK Consultancy Project is an excellent opportunity to practice handling complex and often unstructured business situations. The Mergers and Acquisitions Project This project gives you the perfect opportunity to take risks in a safe environment with support and guidance from our experts. The project builds on your learning from the Not-for-Profit Project and involves working with an external client to solve a real-life business issue. You will work under realistic consultancy conditions bidding against other teams, managing the project and delivering a solution to very tight timescales and budgets. You will be expected to deliver practical and actionable recommendations that will have a genuine impact on your client s business. Although the companies are based in the UK, their problems might not be. Many of the UK consultancy projects have an international dimension, which will not only challenge you but prepare you for the International Business Project and your future career. BMW developing a robust supply chain An MBA team worked with BMW to harness the wealth of knowledge about suppliers that already existed among its employees, outside stakeholders and research institutions. They designed a platform to engage with internal and external agents, crowd source knowledge and enhance collaborative work and research. The team developed a global rollout plan for the platform and provided a range of methods to analyse and maintain it once launched. Working with high level BMW employees on developing a solution which could have far reaching implications, they were able to give the company a business rather than an IT perspective, with the emphasis on user needs. Our recent clients include: BMW Siemens Victrex American Express Cisco Byotrol Confused.com Seer Systems Rightmove Sky Bet Bibby Ship Management Ltd Delamere Dairy Your team will act as the acquisitions function of a major corporation such as Associated British Foods. You will analyse the company and formulate an acquisition strategy. Although the project is simulated, it includes interactive and real-life role-play situations that will test your negotiation skills to the limit. This project is perfect for those who want to develop a career in business development, financial management or investment banking, but it also gives you the multidisciplinary strategy, negotiation, finance and accounting skills essential in modern business. The project showed efficient possibilities for better communication and collaboration within the supply chain. The MBS team also offered a clear recommendation for next steps in implementation and rollout. Norbert Rabauer Project Manager-Purchasing Systems, BMW Group As a marketing and technology professional, I d never had the chance to evaluate organisations financially. The Mergers and Acquisitions Project enabled me to learn about financial analysis, stock evaluation and potential acquisition synergies. This pushed me right outside my comfort zone but it was a great learning experience. Aayaam Kapoor Class of 2014
