3 Northern Bedford County School District The Northern Bedford County School District was formed in 1957, the result of merging three area high schools Replogle, Smith and Woodbury. The district encompasses 112 square miles and has a population of 6,958 per the 2010 census calculations. All buildings of our district are located on the same scenic, rural 135 acre campus north of Loysburg, Pennsylvania. The district currently serves 456 elementary students and 552 Middle/High School Students. The campus is comprised of three buildings the elementary school constructed in 1988; the vocational-technical school constricted in 1976; and the high school erected in 1963, expanded in 1977 and 1996 for renovations to include a middle school facility. The school campus is located within easy commuting distance of Mt. Aloysius College, Allegany Community College at Everett, Shippensburg University, Penn State Altoona Campus, Juniata College, St. Francis University, University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown and other one or two-year vocational schools.

6 Northern Bedford County School District Shared Values Learning is a lifelong process. Parents or primary caregiver are a child's earliest teachers and remain critical influences. All children can learn. Every child deserves the best educational opportunity the school district can provide. The developmental processes of pre-school children are enhanced through school-based early childhood program services. Learning is a shared responsibility among students, teachers, parents, and community. School is a focal point of the community. The school is a moral force that both shapes and reflects community values. A safe, orderly, and disciplined environment is essential for learning. Curriculum and instruction must address the differing needs and learning styles of each student. The high school diploma represents the acquisition of a core of academic skills. The school strives to lead the community in the use of technology. The school fosters and environment which builds positive relationships among all students. 9 Northern Bedford County School District Innovation and Leadership in Education 1:1 Initiative NBC began a 1:1 laptop computer initiative since 2011/12 for Grades 9-12 Each year netbooks have been purchased for Grade 9 students and these follow them throughout their senior year. Once the student graduates, they have been re-cycled to middle and elementary classrooms. We have an extensive Windows based network There are 14 district wide laptop carts, 69 data projectors, 47 interactive white boards, 1,047 computers district wide with 68 plus Wireless access points. This provides a 1:1 access for the middle school students while also providing availability of technology resources to the elementary students. A technology backbone project for middle/high school was completed in 2013/14.

10 Northern Bedford County School District Innovation and Leadership in Education Biomass Boiler The district underwent an ESCO project which was completed in 2012/13 school year which involved the installation of a 170 horsepower wood fired biomass boiler which fuels all three buildings on the campus. This included a wood chip bunker. This brought the district substantial energy savings to the district which was totally fuel dependent. This resulted in Year 1 of $185,000 in fuel oil savings. The district was awarded the Forever Green Award in 2014 and was recognized as a Biomass Green Heat registered site by the Biomass Thermal Energy Council (BTEC)

11 Northern Bedford County School District Innovation and Leadership in Education Other Highlights First district in state to establish a breakfast program for all students. Our current free and reduced rate is 41.12% First district in the area to establish an on-campus technical building. We currently offer building construction, auto mechanics, agriculture, horticulture and business programs. First district in the state to conduct a vocational trade and industry approved program First district in the area to provide a full-day kindergarten program First district in the area to construct a community built playground Panther Paradise. This playground was recently renovated in 2013 with much community support. One of the first five districts in the state to establish pre-school program. Only district in Bedford County to have all its school buildings on one campus. We offer dual enrollment credit classes with higher education programs for our senior high students. The Northern Bedford Education Foundation receives EITC donations which help us offset some of the cost to parents.

13 Panther Community Stadium Completed in October 2003, thru the efforts of the Northern Bedford Community Athletic Association (NBCAA). The NBCAA members asked local community members and businesses for donations, not only of money, but also donations of labor, equipment, tools, materials or any combination of effort, in order to make this truly a community effort. NBC has hosted numerous District track meets and football and soccer playoff games since this facility has been built

14 Athletics NBC is a Class A PIAA school NBC sponsors 26 teams in 11 sports Each year NBC s male and female athletes build upon the district s rich sports traditions. Panther teams have earned numerous league and District V championships while stressing teamwork, good work ethics, self-discipline and fair play.

15 NBC Elementary School Constructed in 1988 by the combination of three elementary buildings This building houses Pre K4 thru Grade 5. There is also one Head Start classroom for Ages 3 and 4 year olds School-wide Title I building 2011 Blue Ribbon School of Excellence winner Classroom guidance, library, computer lab, art classes, physical education and music instruction create well-rounded school offerings We implement enrichment and intervention (I/E) time and use the RtII model as our main intervention for reading. Incorporate the Olweus Bully Prevention program grades K-5.

16 NBC Middle School A middle school wing was added within the secondary building in 1996 to house students in Grades 6-8. Average class size of 18 students 10 Period school day with an Enrichment/Remediation period for each grade level. 17 NBC Senior High School The high school offers many of its courses as dual enrollment credit courses including Sociology, World History, English Comp and Literature, Statistics and Calculus, A&P II, Physics and Chemistry Career and Technical Education offerings include Auto Mechanics, Building Construction, Ag/Hort, Accounting, Co-op program for CTE offerings Curriculum is aligned to core subjects to meet requirements for Common Core and Keystone assessments All students must pass Keystone Literature, Biology and Algebra I Offer Band, Chorus and Guitar electives and have a Singing Show Choir Wide variety of club offerings in academic and CTE programs
