3 Thesis title Abstract Time Diversity Solutions to Cope with Lost Packets Modern broadband wireless systems require high throughputs and can also have very high Quality-of-Service (QoS) requirements, namely small error rates and short delays. Lost packets, either due to errors or collisions, are usually discarded and need to be retransmitted, leading to performance degradation. An alternative to simple retransmission that can improve both power and spectral efficiency is to combine the signals associated to different transmission attempts. This thesis analyses two time diversity approaches to cope with lost packets that are relatively similar at physical layer but handle different packet loss causes. Finally, it is shown that both approaches represent viable solutions for future broadband wireless communications complementing each other. Title of qualification awarded and classification Principal subjects Dates September December 2007 University Thesis title Short Abstract Master of Science in Electrical and Computer Engineering Course: Integrated Master in Electrical and Computer Engineering 5 years - Bologne Process 1 o Cycle Grade: 13 out of 20 Average Final Grade: 15 out of 20 2 o Cycle Grade: 17 out of 20 Master Thesis Grade: 19 out of 20 Telecommunications Sensory Systems and Image Processing Robotics Electronics Electrical Systems FCT/UNL - Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia da Universidade Nova de Lisboa Caparica, Portugal Hybrid Medium Access Control Protocol for Wireless Sensor Networks Wireless Sensor Networks with applications that generate huge peaks of traffic, pose high energy consumption and functional difficulties to the current technology. A new medium access control protocol, MH-MAC, is proposed in order to handle with infrequent peaks of traffic. MH-MAC is a multimode hybrid protocol that can be configured by the application to run in asynchronous mode or in synchronous mode, with or without contention, providing a good performance-consumption trade-off.
