2 School of Criminal Justice and Legal Studies What s New in Criminal Justice For our Alumni, the Criminal Justice program may look very different - one major change being the name. Now situated within the Faculty of Applied and Professional Studies, the formerly named Criminal Justice program is now the School of Criminal Justice and Legal Studies. Within this program, students are then able to specify a particular stream of interest: 2 Criminal Justice Studies Corrections Legal Studies and Administration All Criminal Justice students graduate with not only a broad knowledge of the criminal justice system, but with practical skills in their area of interest. Many of our current and past students have taken advantage of the Canadore college connection, graduating with a university degree as well as a college diploma in either Police Foundations or Community and Justice services. Beginning in the Fall of 2008, students in the Legal Studies and Administration stream were able to gain a Law Clerk Diploma within four years. This connection has also enabled several Law Clerk, Police Foundations and Community and Justice Services students taking the opportunity of 42 university transfer credits, and furthering their education with a degree in criminal justice. Another major change that occurred was the changing of the degree requirements for, Corrections, Legal Studies and Administration and Criminal Justice Studies students. While the core degree requirements stayed the same for all students, Applied Criminal Justice Statistics and Applied Criminological Theory were added as stream requirements for the above noted streams. Finally, while first year criminal justice students in the past did not have the benefit of taking a criminal justice course in their first year. Starting in the fall of 2010, first year students are able to take Intro to the Canadian Criminal Justice System, as well as intro to Canadian Law. This has been a huge benefit to not only the students, but to the faculty and administration. We are loving the ability to get to know our students earlier, and build even better relationships then we have been able to in the past! For all degree requirements, please check out: and click on programs. Our Students in This year our students were spread throughout the community making a positive impact! Five policing stream students attended Canadore for their PFP year and were able to highlight not only their theoretical knowledge, but also their leadership skills. In addition, leadership outside of the classroom was demonstrated by the field placement students who showcased not only their leadership abilities, but their professionalism. Students were placed at the North Bay courthouse, the O.P.P., the Military Police, North Bay Police, Nipissing Juvenille Dentention Centre, Phonebusters, Canadian Border Services in St. Catherines and Maplehurst Correctional Centre in Milton, Ontario. Even more impressive were the number of students who so graciously donated their time to the program, as well as the community saw a fantastic Criminal Justice Student Association, made up of fourth year students: Natasha Vaessen (president), Emmett McAlear (vice-president), Kyle Gibson (Canadore/Nipissing Liason) and second year student Chelsea Farrell (Secretary). A huge thank you goes out to the executive from the students and faculty. Without you, the year would not have been the same! Other students got involved in the Nipissing community as members of varsity sports teams (hockey and volleyball), New Student Orientation and Frosh Week, as well as the Women s Centre. Students also donated their time within the community, volunteering for the Operation Red Nose Program during the Christmas Holiday Season. The changes made to the program not only gave us the chance to get to know our first year students better, but through various events and activities in and outside of the classroom, our upper years students had the chance to develop academic and personal relationships that will last a life time. Whether it was getting together to attend criminal justice social events, or working on a creative and fun group project in Professor Lechlitner s class, our students definitely grew closer together! The addition of the introductory criminal justice class in first year also helped with this, as first year student involvement was at an all-time high! With a goal of making criminal justice students as successful, productive and happy as possible - we will continually strive to make changes that will have an enormously positive impact for each individual student. As we begin to plan for the next couple of years, we look forward to sharing with you the exciting things to come! School of Criminal Justice and Legal Studies

3 Canadore College Law & Justice For the past several years there has been a swinging door between our two institutions that has seen many of Nipissing s Criminal Justice Students complete Canadore s Police Foundation in a reduced time frame as a part of their overall postsecondary experience. That same swinging door has also allowed many of Canadore s Police Foundations graduates to access the Criminal Justice at Nipissing, completing their degree in a reduced period of time. This agreement has served our respective institutions and programs well and more importantly it has served our students well. I would like to extend congratulations to the class of 2010 C.J. graduates and in particular Natasha Vassen, Kyle Mask, Sarah Burden, Sarah McLaughlin and Steve Hitchins who all completed the requirements of both programs and received full convocation privileges from both institutions. Our faculty at Canadore is very proud of these students and we are pleased that we, in some small way, contributed to their success. We are also very grateful to all C.J. transfers for sharing the benefit of their university experience with the students in our program. The C.J. students bring out the best in their college classmates and generally enhance the classroom learning environment. There is little doubt that many of these individuals will be at the front of the line as their future police application plays through. This has already been proven time and time again and one need look no further than our own local policing service to witness the success of our placement efforts as a significant number of our graduates from both programs have embarked on policing careers with the North Bay Police Service. By hiring a number of our graduates the North Bay Police Service has acknowledged the importance of a balanced theoretical and applied learning experience found in both of our post secondary programs. We look forward to our continued involvement with the Criminal Justice program. I would also like to acknowledge the continued efforts of Dr. Barker, Dr. Brown, Professor Houle-Lechlitner and indeed the entire C.J. faculty for their continued support of this agreement. I would also like to acknowledge the efforts of Kindra McMillan who not only supports this agreement, but works very hard to facilitate the transfer of these students and for her efforts in promoting other program activities. So let s keep that swinging door well oiled as it is apparent that it is going to get considerable more use in the future as this educational arrangement has become an attractive option to students on both sides. Leo de Jourdan Program Coordinator, Police Foundations Phone: ext dejourdl@canadorec.on.ca Institute for Applied Social Research The IASR was established in September The IASR designs and conducts both academic and applied research and evaluation projects, with special emphasis on northern Ontario. An important goal of the Institute is to provide students with the opportunity to assist in conducting research and evaluation projects. The Director of the IASR is Dr. Gregory P. Brown, Associate Professor in Criminal Justice, and Chair and Professor in the Department of Sociology. Students are also employed by the IASR, which not only provide them financial benefits, but also research experience that they would not have the opportunity to receive at a larger university. The IASR draws on the expertise of a wide variety of faculty associates in designing and conducting research projects. There are several current projects being conducted by the IASR in conjunction with The Ontario Provincial Police; The Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services; The Ministry of Health; and The North Bay Police Service. The IASR has expertise in research design and analysis; program and policy evaluation; focus group facilitation; structured interviewing; and statistical forecasting. Conferences In addition to research, the IASR had the pleasure of hosting and co-hosting two major conferences in the fall of In September 2008 the IASR hosted a conference in conjunction with InterRAI/ inemh called the Evidence Based Health Care Practice for Northern and Rural Communities: Ideas for Change. Over 100 nurses and health care administrators from all over Ontario were in attendance. Presenters included PhDs, Psychiatrists and other health care specialists, all of whom are members of InterRAI. InterRAI is a collaborative network of researchers in over 30 countries committed to improving health care for persons who are elderly, frail or disabled ( Their goal is to promote evidenced-based clinical practice and policy decisions through the collection and interpretation of high quality data about the characteristics and outcomes of persons served across a variety of health social services settings. In October of 2008, the IASR co-hosted the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services conference The Changing Face of Corrections: A Conference for Practitioners and Researchers. For more information about the IASR, or past research and events please contact: Dr. Greg Brown - gregb@nipissingu.ca Faculty Publications In 2009, Dr. Jane Barker - Chair of the Criminal Justice Department, published the text Women in the Criminal Justice System: A Canadian Perspective (Emond, 2009). The content ranges from an overview of essential theory, to practical challenges such as mental health issues and community reintegration, to an examination of women s roles and careers in the field of criminal justice This text has been positively received by several Canadian universities and is considered a welcome and timely addition to the small body of Canadian materials on women in conflict with the law and a significant contribution to the relatively thin literature on women in conflict with the law in Canada - a welcome addition to those ranks, and a useful undergraduate text in the field (Rosanna Langer, Laurentian University). Congrats Dr. Barker!!! School of Criminal Justice and Legal Studies 3

5 S E Q U O I A C L U B OPP Commissioner Julian Fantino The CJSA welcomed Ontario s Top Cop, Julian Fantino, to speak with our students about what it takes to be a great police officer. CJ Faculty and the Dean enjoying the evening Signing autographs for a police officer s wife Security Detail February 3rd, 2010 The Criminal Justice department and the CJSA had the pleasure of welcoming OPP Commissioner Julian Fantino to speak to students, faculty and members of the Nipissing, Canadore and greater North Bay community. The Weaver auditorium was filled with more than 150 people, including North Bay Police, West Nipissing Police, OPP Constables and Auxiliary police. Biography Appointed Commissioner of the OPP in 2006, Fantino accepted responsibility for one of North America s largest deployed police services - A police service comprised of approximately 5,900 uniformed members, 1,800 civilian employes and 850 Auxiliary members who provide services to over 922,752 square kilometers of land and 110,398 square kilometers of waterways. Fantino oversees front-line delivery, administrative support services and specialized and multi jurisdictional investigations throughout the Province of Ontario. Previously, Commissioner Fantino was the Chief of the Toronto Police Service as well as the Chief of York Regional Police. During his initial 23 years with the Metropolitan Toronto Police, Commissioner Fantino served in many areas, including uniform patrol, undercover drug enforcement, Detective Branch, Criminal Intelligence, Homicide Squad and as a Division Commander. He has lectured extensively to the international police community, the public sector and government bodies. Commissioner Fantino has authored many articles that have been published on a wide range of public safety and law enforcement issues. He is also the co-author of a best selling biography, Duty: The Life of a Cop. Words of Wisdom for Future Police Commissioner Fantino touched on his life as a police officer; from his beginnings as a Constable, to his then recent controversies as the head the O.P.P. His words were inspiring to the many future police officers in the audience as he spoke about how far he has come, as well how positive an experience the world of policing has been for him. His words also resonated for students interested in other areas of the criminal justice field. He helped students realize that with hard work and determination, they are able to be successful no matter which career they choose. As a Department and a Student Association we are so thankful for the Commissioner taking the time to share his wisdom learned through his experiences. Experiences that are at times, much more valuable then what students and other professionals are able to learn in a classroom alone. Media and Thank You Thank you to Bob Pipe - Nip U Advancement, for all of his help in getting our event publicized in the media, and making our event a success. 8 S E Q U O I A C L U B ALUMNI Our alumni have managed to accomplish some pretty incredible things! Below are just some highlights of what some of our Alumni are up to today. Our Graduates When our students move on from Nipissing we are sad to see them go, but so excited to see what they accomplish beyond these walls. Below are just a few highlights of what our graduates have achieved since leaving Nipissing and the criminal justice department. Student s in Blue Several of our criminal justice graduates have successfully been recruited to various police forces. These forces include: North Bay Police, Peel Regional, Halton Region, Orillia Police Service, Military POlice, the O.P.P (stationed in various cities across Ontario), and the RCMP. One of our graduates, Jenn Burgoyne (graduated 2006) just recently became a member of the RCMP Musical Ride, stationed in Ottawa. Two graduates from this years class are currently being recruited by the OPP. Courts and Corrections While there is great interest from our students to be police officers, several aspire to be involved with a different aspect of the Justice system. Others have found their calling working with children in juvenile detention centers. The courts have also employed some of our students as court clerks and court diversion workers. On the administrative side of correctional services, students have been employed by The Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services - Program Effectiveness, Statistics and Applied Research Unit in North Bay, as well as Correctional Services Canada in Ottawa. Graduate School and Traveling Abroad While some of our students chose to make their mark across the pond in London, England - many of our students, mostly those in the stream, aspire to go on to graduate school or Law School. Within the last 5 years, students have gone on to graduate studies in and Sociology at the University of Ottawa, The University of Toronto, the University of Guelph and the University of Waterloo. A few have also gone onto law school. Tara Schuck (featured on page 10) just graduated from Queen s, and Jacob Downs is venturing to Australia in the next year to begin his law degree. Lindsey Peccaric, who just recently graduated from the University of Ottawa with a Masters degree in is now working at Public Safety Canada as an Aboriginal Affairs Policy Coordinator and Evaluation Analyst within the Aboriginal Directorate. Her Directorate is responsible for providing policing services/agreements to Aboriginal communities across Canada. Our students have done some amazing things since leaving Nipissing, and while these were just some of the highlights - in future issues we will continue to showcase our student s accomplishments by shinning a spotlight on our most successful students from each previous year. We look forward to their continued success and cannot wait to see what they have in store for the future!! 8 School of Criminal Justice and Legal Studies

9 GRADUATION 2010 Do not go where the path may lead; go instead where there is no path and leave a trail Ralph Waldo Emerson June 11, 2010 A HUGE congratulations goes out to our graduating class of 2010! It was a beautiful day in North Bay, and graduates were surrounded by classmates, friends and family who cheered and smiled from ear to ear as their son or daughter received their hard earned diploma. The ceremony included an honourary degree recipient, former Premiere of Ontario, Mike Harris and a very deserving Valedictorian, Anna Fitzsimmons. But, despite the special honours, the main focus that day was ultimately the students. As a program we are incredibly proud to have graduated such a group of amazing individuals. This year, a total of 26 students graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in, and Policy and Administration. A special congratulations goes out to our students who graduated with distinction, achieving an overall average of 80%; Sarah Burden, James Kilroy and Sarah Turcotte. Sarah Burden was also the recipient of the JW Trussler Award for Academic Proficiency in Arts and Science, and the George T. Berrigan Award, which is given to a graduating student in the policing stream who achieved the highest academic average. From left to right: Picture 1: (Brent Woolgar, Kindra McMillan, Kyle Willard) Picture 2: (Shelley Lechlitner and Adam Kearney) Picture 3: (Chancellor David Liddle and Brent Woolgar) As testament to the hard work of our students as a whole, two have already been recruited for policing (OPP and Halton Region) and one has found his calling working with youth at the Nipissing Juvenile Detention Centre. To the graduating class of 2010, the Criminal Justice department would like to send you off in the world with some parting words. First of all, thank you for making our job easy; you are all tremendous individuals! Second, we are so very proud of your accomplishments and we cannot wait to the see amazing things you do in the future. Finally, You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself in any direction you choose. You're on your own. And you know what you know. You are the person who'll decide where to go. ~ Dr. Seuss School of Criminal Justice and Legal Studies 9
