2 Curriculum Vitae SOFIA R. PAULETA 1. Personal Data Dr. Sofia Rocha Pauleta, Dipl. Applied Chemistry - Biotechnology Current position: Invited Scientist in REQUIMTE CQFB, since November 2012 Portuguese Representative in the Division of Chemistry in Life Sciences, in EuCheMS Date of Birth: , Lisboa Nationality: Portuguese Address: Praceta Viana da Mota, 123, R/C ESQ, S. Pedro do Estoril Estoril. Portugal Phone: (+351) Mobile: (+351) Web Page: https://sites.google.com/site/spauletagroup/ Specializations: Biophysics, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Structural Biology using NMR methods, Biomolecular Spectroscopy Metalloproteins, Heterologous Expression of Metalloproteins, Protein- Protein Interactions, Gene Expression, Stress response to metals and oxygen, Denitrification. I finished my 5-year B.Sc. in Applied Chemistry Biotechnology in 1998 (as the best student of Faculty of Science and Technology, New University of Lisbon), and my Ph.D. in Biochemistry-Biophysical Chemistry, in 2003 from the New University of Lisbon, under the supervision of Prof. Graham W. Pettigrew, University of Edinburgh (UK) and Prof. Isabel Moura, New University of Lisbon. My thesis work focused on the biophysical and structural characterization of electron transfer (ET) complexes between Paracoccus cytochrome c peroxidase and its electron donors. During my post-doctoral fellowship I characterized ET complexes involving superoxide reductase and its redox partners, under the supervision of Prof. José Moura, and worked on the determination of the solution structure of the Orange Protein using NMR methodologies, under the co-supervision of Prof. Ivano Bertini, at CERM, University of Florence (Italy). In 2007, I was awarded an Assistant Researcher position at REQUIMTE, where I have been developing my own projects on the characterization of molecular systems (mostly metalloproteins) involved in metal tolerance in bacteria, detoxification of reactive oxygen species from pathogenic bacteria, and cell division of anaerobic bacteria using several spectroscopic (visible, EPR, NMR and Resonance Raman), and biophysical (kinetics, microcalorimetry and analytical ultracentrifugation) techniques, complemented by proteomics and transcriptomic analysis. Structural NMR and the use of paramagnetic probes to characterize protein-protein interactions by NMR are also some of my parallel scientific interests. I have been the organizer of a yearly International Hands-on Course From Proteomics to Proteins (a 15 ECTS Diploma), which has already had four successful editions. I also teach in this course in the Biomolecular NMR and Heterologous Expression and Protein Purification modules. In addition, I teach other disciplines (General Biochemistry, Analytical Biochemistry and Biophysical Chemistry) at the level of B.Sc. and Master. At this moment, I am the supervisor of 3 Post-doc, four Ph.D. students and one Master student at REQUIMTE-CQFB Associated Laboratory. I have published 32 peer-reviewed papers, 2 book chapters, and I have an h-factor of 9. I have made 15 oral communications in Scientific Meetings, 95 communications in International Scientific Meetings and 35 in National Scientific Meetings. I have recently received grants as a PI (in a total of in Research and Development Projects and in Bilateral Projects), and I am also a team member in other active R&D Projects that have been financed (with a total of 120k ) for the next 2/3-years. 2
