6 Deep Freeze Snap-in for Novell ConsoleOne Overview About the Deep Freeze Snap-in for Novell ConsoleOne The Deep Freeze Snap-in for Novell ConsoleOne allows administrators to control and manage the state of Deep Freeze on workstations in their environment through the use of specific tasks that can be created and scheduled through ConsoleOne. System Requirements The Deep Freeze Snap-in for Novell ConsoleOne supports workstations running Windows 2000, XP and Windows 98 that have Deep Freeze 6.3 installed. Specific requirements for individual components are listed below. Refer to the section of this guide titled: The Deep Freeze Snap-in for Novell ConsoleOne components for more information on individual components. Deep Freeze Snap-in for Novell ConsoleOne ConsoleOne 1.3.6f ZENWorks 7 Desktop Management Snap-ins must be installed. Workstation objects representing the workstations that are to be managed have been created in the NDS tree. Snap-in Scheduler The computer hosting the Snap-in Scheduler must have the Java runtime installed. The latest runtime can be downloaded from The Snap-in Scheduler can be installed on Windows 2000/XP/2003, Novell NetWare 6.5 and Novell s SLED Linux distribution. Snap-in Workstation Agent Deep Freeze 6.3 must be installed. A command line password (DFC Password) must be configured at each workstation which will be managed.
7 Deep Freeze Workstation Installation For instructions on configuring the Deep Freeze workstation installation file on Windows machines, refer to the Configuration Administrator section of the Deep Freeze Enterprise user guide in the Faronics Content Library. The Deep Freeze workstation installation files must be configured with a command line password for the Snap-in to be able to send events or commands to the workstation. If the command line password is not set on a given workstation the copy of Deep Freeze will not be manageable through the Deep Freeze Snapin. For information on setting command line passwords, consult the Deep Freeze Enterprise user s manual. The Deep Freeze Snap-in for Novell ConsoleOne Components: The Deep Freeze Snap-in for Novell ConsoleOne consists of three major components: ConsoleOne Snap-in The ConsoleOne Snap-in allows for the selection of a Workstation object, Workstation Group object, or Organizational Unit with Workstation objects within it. Once selected, administrators can send the workstation(s) Deep Freeze tasks such as Reboot Frozen, Reboot Thawed as well as Reboot Thawed and Locked. Snap-in Scheduler The Snap-in Scheduler receives tasks sent from ConsoleOne and sends the tasks to the workstation(s) at the scheduled times. The password parameter is the only setting that is stored on a per session basis. Once the password is set, it is not necessary to set it again until the current ConsoleOne session ends. To access the configuration panel, select Tools > Deep Freeze > Update Configuration. For more information, consult the section titled Configuring the Scheduler in ConsoleOne. Snap-in Workstation Agent The Snap-in Agent must be installed on all workstations with Deep Freeze software installed. The Snap-in Agent listens on port 7724 for tasks from the Snap-in Scheduler. The Snap-in Agent then passes the task to the workstation via the command line (dfc. exe) component installed with the Deep Freeze workstation software. Refer to Appendix B for more information on changing port numbers.
8 System Diagram Each workstation featuring Deep Freeze must have the Snap-in Workstation Agent installed manually or deployed via ConsoleOne. For more information consult the section of this guide titled: Installing the Snap-in workstation Agent. The Snap-in Scheduler can be installed and run on any of the three following three systems: Windows, NetWare and Linux SLED. The Deep Freeze Snap-in for Novell ConsoleOne supports the typical deployment scenario for Novell users. The Deep Freeze Snap-in for Novell ConsoleOne can be installed and run with ConsoleOne which is installed on the NetWare server. It can also be deployed to a Windows system with ConsoleOne installed. It is recommended that the components of the Deep Freeze Snap-in for Novell ConsoleOne be installed in following order: 1. ConsoleOne Snap-in 2. Snap-in Workstation Agent 3. Snap-in Scheduler
9 Deep Freeze Snap-in for Novell ConsoleOne About the Snap-in Component The ConsoleOne Snap-in allows for the selection of a Workstation object, Workstation Group object, or Organizational Unit with Workstation objects within it. Once selected, administrators can send the workstation(s) Deep Freeze tasks such as Reboot Frozen, Reboot Thawed as well as Reboot Thawed and Locked. The ConsoleOne Snap-in sends the task to the scheduler component to be executed on the workstation at the scheduled time. Installing the ConsoleOne Snap-in To install the ConsoleOne Snap-in, complete the following steps: 1. Select the local machine or NetWare location which also has ConsoleOne installed. If installing on a NetWare server, map a drive to the SYS:\Public\MGMT directory. 2. Double click on the.msi installer file called Deep Freeze Snap-in for Novell ConsoleOne. The following screen appears:
10 3. Click Next to continue. The following screen appears: 4. Select the install location featuring ConsoleOne. The default location is C:\Novell\ ConsoleOne\1.2. To install ConsoleOne on a NetWare server select the drive mapping added in step one and browse to the ConsoleOne\1.2 directory. The last directory in the path for the installation must be the 1.2 directory. For example F:\public\mgmt\ConsoleOne\ Click Next. The following screen appears: 10

Uninstalling the ConsoleOne Snap-in To uninstall the ConsoleOne Snap-in complete the following steps: If the ConsoleOne Snap-in has been installed on a NetWare server through a mapped drive, ensure the same drive is mapped for the uninstall. 1. Click on Start followed by Control Panel then Add/Remove Programs. 2. Choose the Deep Freeze Snap-in for Novell ConsoleOne and click Change/Remove. 3. Select Remove. A message appears informing that the Snap-in has been uninstalled. 11
12 Deep Freeze Snap-in for Novell ConsoleOne Scheduler About the Snap-in Scheduler The Snap-in Scheduler receives tasks sent from ConsoleOne and sends the tasks to the workstation(s) at the scheduled times. The Snap-in Scheduler can run on Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows 2003 Server, NetWare 6.5 and Linux SLED 10. If the Snap-in Scheduler is to be installed on a machine running Microsoft operating systems, Java must be installed. ( Ensure that the clock on the workstation where ConsoleOne is running and the clock on the server running the Snap-in Scheduler are synchronized. This ensures tasks are executed at the specified time. Installing the Snap-in Scheduler on Windows To install the Snap-in Scheduler on Windows 2000, XP or 2003 Server complete the following steps: 1. Double click on the.msi installer file named Deep Freeze Snap-in for Novell ConsoleOne Scheduler. The following screen appears: 12

Starting the Snap-in Scheduler Service on Windows Install the Snap-in Scheduler as a service by clicking on Start > Programs > Faronics > ZENWorks Scheduler > Install Service. 13
14 Uninstalling the Snap-in Scheduler on Windows To uninstall the Snap-in Scheduler, complete the following steps: 1. Click on Start > Programs > Faronics > Snap-in Scheduler > Uninstall Service. 2. Click on Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs. 3. Choose the Deep Freeze Snap-in for Novell ConsoleOne Scheduler and click Change/Remove. 4. Select Remove. A message appears informing that the Snap-in Scheduler has been uninstalled. Installing the Snap-in Scheduler on NetWare To install the Snap-in Scheduler on NetWare 6.5 complete the following steps: 1. Browse to the Scheduler\NetWare build package found on the install CD or download. 2. Copy the entire Faronics directory to the root of the SYS volume on the NetWare server. The Snap-in Scheduler must run from the SYS:\Faronics directory. Creating the directory in another location will cause the Snap-in Scheduler to fail. 3. Start the Snap-in Scheduler by typing the following command on the NetWare server console that contains the copied files: java jar SYS:\Faronics\NWFaronicsScheduler.jar To verify the Snap-in Scheduler is running, switch to the Logger Screen and look for an entry stating the Snap-in Scheduler is ready. 4. Auto start the Snap-in Scheduler by adding the following line to the NetWare server s autoexec. ncf file (found in \\Server name\sys\system): java jar SYS:\Faronics\NWFaronicsScheduler.jar Uninstalling the Snap-in Scheduler on NetWare To uninstall the Snap-in Scheduler on NetWare complete the following steps: 1. Unload the Snap-in Scheduler from the NetWare server. Get the Java PID that the Snap-in Scheduler is running under by typing: java show at the console Note the number at the right of the Snap-in Scheduler entry. Unload the Snap-in Scheduler by typing: java kill Number (e.g. java kill754) There is no space between the kill and the number. 14
15 2. Delete the following line from the autoexec.ncf (\\Server name\sys\system) on the NetWare server: java jar SYS:\Faronics\NWFaronicsScheduler.jar 3. Delete the Faronics directory from the root of SYS on the NetWare server. Installing the Snap-in Scheduler on Linux To install the Snap-in Scheduler on Linux complete the following steps: 1. Ensure Java or greater is installed. To get the latest version visit: 2. Copy the entire Faronics directory found on the installation CD to the root of the user directory. 3. To start the Snap-in Scheduler open a terminal window and type: java jar /pathto/faronicsscheduler.jar Enabling the Snap-in Scheduler s auto start function on Linux To set up the Snap-in Scheduler to auto-start complete the following steps: 1. Open the file FaronicsSchedulerService with vi (or gedit or another Linux editor). 2. Edit line # 9. cd /home/usr/faronics # Edit the /home/usr/faronics part to the path to the directory where FaronicsScheduler. jar, SchedTrustStore.jar, and SchedulerKeyStore.jar reside. For example if FaronicsScheduler.jar is located in: /home/jdoe/faronics/faronicsscheduler.jar then the new line #9 should read: cd /home/jdoe/faronics 3. Save the file and exit. 4. Ensure the file is executable by typing the following: chmod +x FaronicsSchedulerService 5. Move FaronicsSchedulerService to the following directories: On SuSe/Debian: /etc/init.d On Red Hat/Fedora: /etc/rc.d/init.d 6. At a command line (as root from the /etc/init.d directory) type: chkconfig --add FaronicsSchedulerService 7. The service is now active. The Service can also be started and stopped manually through the following commands: Start: /etc/init.d/faronicsschedulerservice start Stop: /etc/init.d/faronicsschedulerservice stop 15
16 Uninstalling the Snap-in Scheduler on Linux To uninstall the Snap-in Scheduler on Linux perform the following steps: 1. Stop the Snap-in Scheduler from the Linux server: Navigate to the /etc/init.d directory as the root user. 2. Modify the following script: chkconfig --del FaronicsSchedulerService 3. Delete the Faronics directory from the user directory on the Linux server. 16
17 Snap-in Workstation Agent About the Snap-in Workstation Agent The Snap-in Workstation Agent must be installed on all workstations with Deep Freeze software installed. The Snap-in Workstation Agent listens for tasks from the Snap-in Scheduler. The Snap-in Workstation Agent then passes the task to the workstation via the command line component installed with the Deep Freeze workstation software. Installing the Snap-in Workstation Agent for Windows 2000 and XP The Snap-in Workstation Agent can be installed on machines before or after the Deep Freeze workstation program is installed. On machines with the Deep Freeze workstation program installed make sure the machine is in the Thawed state prior to installing the Snap-in Workstation Agent. There are separate install.msi files for Windows 2000/XP and Windows 98 while the installation and removal procedures are identical. Verify your Windows version prior to installing the Snap-in Workstation Agent. To install the Snap-in Workstation Agent on Windows 2000, and XP complete the following steps: 1. Double click on the.msi installer file called Deep Freeze Snap-in for Novell ConsoleOne Workstation Agent. The following screen appears: 17
18 2. Click Next to continue. The following screen appears: 3. Click Install to complete the installation. To create a ZENWorks Application Object that installs the Snap-in Workstation Agent see Appendix A. Uninstalling the Snap-in Workstation Agent on Windows 2000 and XP. To uninstall the Snap-in Workstation Agent, complete the following steps: 1. Click on Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs. 2. Choose the Deep Freeze Snap-in for ConsoleOne Workstation Agent and click Change/Remove. 3. Select Remove. A message appears indicating that the Snap-in Workstation Agent has been uninstalled. 18
19 Using the Deep Freeze Snap-in for Novell ConsoleOne Configuring the Snap-in Scheduler in ConsoleOne Before scheduling Deep Freeze tasks, ConsoleOne must be configured with information about the Snap-in Scheduler. Enter the information types listed below in the Deep Freeze Configuration panel in ConsoleOne. The password parameter is the only setting that is stored on a per session basis. Once the password is set, it is not necessary to set it again until the current ConsoleOne session ends. To access the configuration panel, select Tools > Deep Freeze > Update Configuration. Fields IP address and Port of the server Password for DFC.exe UNC path of the configuration file UNC path of the software update file Enter the IP and valid port number of the Snap-in Scheduler. The default port of 7724 is recommended. This is the password for the DFC.exe (Deep Freeze Command Line) that is configured with the Deep Freeze Enterprise 6 - Configuration Administrator tool. This is the network accessible path to the Deep Freeze configuration file in use. This location is stored for future sessions of ConsoleOne until it is changed in this configuration panel. This is the network accessible path to the Deep Freeze software update file in use. This location is stored for future sessions of ConsoleOne until it is changed in this configuration panel. 19
20 Creating a Task To create a task, complete the following steps: 1. Select the workstations to send a task. If an entire OU is selected all machines in the OU will be sent the task. 2. Right-click on the selected OU, workstation group or individual workstation to display a menu containing Deep Freeze. Pausing over Deep Freeze displays a sub menu featuring available tasks. If machines are selected that do not have Deep Freeze software installed, the task is still sent but will not be performed. 20
21 3. Select the desired task. Each task (except Report Deep Freeze Status) opens the Deep Freeze Task panel. The task panel is divided into three main sections. The first section displays the selected task. The second section displays the selected machines. Machines can be selected by OU (Organizational Unit), workstations group, or by individual workstation. The third panel displays various task details that can be configured by the user. Execute Task Now Later UNC Path to File Select Now and no other options can be specified (disables the other fields). Schedule the task according to the following parameters: Date: The date is inputted based on the international format of Year/ Month/Day. Month: Ranged from 1-12 and day ranges are 1-31/1-30/1-28/1-29 depending on the month and year. Time: The time is in 24 hour format with Hours(HH) listed first and Minutes(MM) listed second. Hour ranges are from 0-23 and minutes range from This line is pre-populated with the value inputted in the Deep Freeze Configuration Panel corresponding to the update Deep Freeze software task and update Deep Freeze configuration task. If no setting in the Deep Freeze Configuration Panel has been entered previously, or the entry needs to be changed, edit this line here. 21
22 View a Scheduled Task View currently scheduled tasks, by clicking on the Jobs button on the lower left of the Task Panel. The following screen displays the currently scheduled jobs. View the existing jobs or select one or more jobs to be deleted. If two jobs of the same type are scheduled for the same time, the number next to the job is increased by one. Both still execute only with different names. View a Workstation Status Task If the task selected is a View workstation status task the following screen appears: Status information is returned three workstations at a time. After all of the options are set, click OK in the Deep Freeze Task panel. 22
23 When scheduling and executing tasks the following conditions may apply: If a password has not been set for this session of ConsoleOne, a dialog appears asking the user to specify a password. Tasks are sent according to the machines selected; whether it is an entire OU, workstations group, or single workstation. For groups/ou s of more than 100 machines, the responses return 100 at a time. The name displayed is the hostname of the machine. 23
24 Appendix A: Creating ZENWorks Application Objects ZENWorks for Desktops has powerful application deployment features. These features can be used to deploy the software to install Deep Freeze on workstations, and the Workstation Agent component of the Deep Freeze Snap-in for Novell ConsoleOne. For more information consult the support documentation included with Novell s Desktop Management software. Included with the installation package are Application Templates (.axt files) for creating the Application Objects to Install, Uninstall (including Uninstall Leave Seed) the Deep Freeze Workstation Software. To create the Install Application Objects for the Deep Freeze enabled workstations complete the following steps: 1. Select the OU where the Application Object will reside. 2. Click on the Create New Application button (illustrated below). 3. Select Create Application from AOT/AXT followed by Next. 24
25 4. Browse to the AXT file located on the product CD, then click Next. 5. Click Next. This screen and the following five feature options automatically configured by the Application Templates which can be modified by the administrator or skipped entirely. 6. Check Display Details after creation. 25
26 7. Modify the Run Options > Application Attribute to point to the UNC path of the Deep Freeze Workstation software executable created using the Deep Freeze Configuration Administrator. 8. Associate the Application Object with the appropriate object in the directory. (This can include a container, user or entire trees.) Click on the Associations tab and select a workstation. 9. Click OK. There are two additional Application Templates. One uninstalls the Deep Freeze Workstation Software, the other uninstalls the Deep Freeze Workstation Software and leaves the Seed in place. The processes to create these Application Objects from templates are similar to the process described above. 26
27 Creating an Application to Deploy the Snap-in Workstation Agent There is no Application template to create the Application Object to install the Snap-in Workstation Agent. The installer is an.msi file, and creating the Application Object can be completed by using the following steps: 1. Select the OU where the Application Object will reside. 2. Click on the Create New Application button (circled below). 3. Select an application that has an.msi file and click Next. 4. Browse to the Snap-in for Novell ConsoleOne Workstation Agent.msi file and click Next. 27
28 5. Type a name for the Application Object then click Next. 6. Click Next. The following three screens feature options automatically configured by the Application Template. These can be modified by the administrator or skipped. 7. Check Display Details after creation then click Finish. 8. Associate Application with User or Workstation for deployment. (If using workstation be sure to have the correct application settings. This ensures proper deployment to a workstation.) Check Force Run for all associations. 28
29 9. Click the Availability tab and set a File Exist parameter by clicking on Add followed by File Existence. 10. Enter Path for DF Snap-in for Novell ConsoleOne Workstation Agent executable file. (File is C:\program Files\Faronics\DFConsoleOne.exe) Be sure to select File Does Not exist. 11. Click OK. 12. Click OK again to save and close the Application Object Properties. 29
30 Adding Registry Entries for a Workstation in a Thawed or Thawed and Locked State Add an Availability attribute for ZENWorks Application Objects to deploy software or set workstations when they are in a Thawed or Thawed and Locked state. This ensures that applications and settings are only deployed when the workstation is in a state that retains changes made even after a restart. 1. Right-click on the Application Object to be modified and select Properties. 2. Click on the Availability tab. 3. Select Add followed by Registry. 4. Add the following Registry Key. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Faronics\Deep Freeze 6\DF Status = Thawed 5. Repeat and add the following Registry Key. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Faronics\Deep Freeze 6\DF Status = Thawed and Locked Make sure to select the or between the registries so one or the other is present but not both. 6. Click OK. 30
31 Appendix B: Changing Port Numbers If the default port number of 7724 is occupied by other software it must be changed to an unassigned port number. The following instructions outline how to change the port number for the Deep Freeze Snap-in for Novell ConsoleOne. ConsoleOne To use the ConsoleOne interface to change the assigned port number select the Tools menu followed by Deep Freeze and Update Scheduler Configuration. Enter the new port number in the field marked IP address and port number of Server. Click OK. For more information consult the section titled: Using the Deep Freeze Snap-in for Novell ConsoleOne. Snap-in Scheduler In order to change the ports for the Snap-in Scheduler, there are two parameters that can be modified. The first is called porttoagent. This is the port that the Snap-in Scheduler uses to communicate with the Workstation Agent. To change this to something other than the default of 7724, change this setting on the Workstation Agent as well to correspond to the change in port. See the section on changing the Workstation Agent port for more details. The second is called porttolisten. This is the port that Snap-in Scheduler uses to communicate with ConsoleOne. If changing this setting ensure the setting in ConsoleOne matches this value. Windows To change the port number on Windows platforms perform the following steps: 1. Find the FaronicsSchedulerService.conf file located in the same directory as the FaronicsScheduler.exe 2. Find the following entries: #wrapper.app.parameter.2=-porttoagent 7724 #wrapper.app.parameter.3=-porttolisten Change the port numbers, ensure that they are not already in use. 4. Remove the pound sign(#) from the lines for the changes to take effect. 5. Save the changes and restart the Faronics Scheduler service. NetWare To manually change the port number on NetWare platforms perform the following steps: 1. Unload the Snap-in Scheduler as outlined in the section titled: Uninstalling Scheduler for NetWare. 2. Manually start the Snap-in Scheduler using the following command: java -jar SYS:\Faronics\NWFaronicsScheduler.jar -porttoagent #### -porttolisten #### 31
32 To allow the service to auto run using a new port number after each server reboot on NetWare platforms, perform the following steps: Linux 1. Edit autoexec.ncf file and edit the line outlined in the section regarding the Snap-in Scheduler autostart. (java jar SYS:\Faronics\NWFaronicsScheduler.jar) Modify the line so that it looks like this: java jar SYS:\Faronics\NWFaronicsScheduler.jar -porttoagent #### -porttolisten #### The #### s represent the new port number. 2. Save this file and exit. To manually change the port number on Linux platform, perform the following steps: 1. Stop the service as outlined in the section reagarding uninstalling the Snap-in Scheduler Service on Linux. 2. Type java -jar path_to/faronicsscheduler.jar -porttoagent #### -porttolisten #### This will start the service until the next restart, in which case the script file will automatically start the Snap-in Scheduler for all future restarts. To allow the service to auto run using a new port number after each server reboot on Linux platforms, perform the following steps: 1.
