2 SMART URBANISATION SERIES The YES Institute Smart Urbanisation series seeks to involve Government officials, international investors, civil society leaders, entrepreneurs, academicians, think-tanks and Multilaterals in high-level discussions to bring smart city ideas to life. The first Smart Urbanisation dialogue focused on effective governance and the value of good spatial planning to reduce investment in infrastructure and harness its value for socio-economic development, and environmental conservation. Close to 8000 towns and cities are rapidly urbanizing due to India s economic growth. Our cities face a range of social, environmental and economic issues due to lack of planned urban development. The top 100 Indian cities comprise only 0.26% of the country s total area, yet account for 192 million people. Though the Rana Kapoor importance of urban centers as MD & CEO economic hubs is indispensible, their Chief Mentor adverse impact on the environment cannot be ignored. I am confident that good urban design can give us an opportunity to bring together the best in technology and infrastructure to achieve compact, efficient and Zero Carbon Cities, thereby making development truly responsible.

3 SMART URBANIZATION SERIES YES Institute at YES BANK, a private sector global think tank, has been established in India to channel private sector capital towards India s development. We strongly believe in India s manufacturing potential. 6 SESSION HIGHLIGHTS India is on the cusp of development with a sharp focus on Smart Cities as an engine for economic development, integration and inclusion. We believe Smart Urban Design can direct and balance urban growth and actualize the Government s objective of Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas. Urban design is primarily about integration of infrastructure, built environment, public and open spaces with focus on quality, sustainability and longevity. Universities can emerge as the new urban observatories and innovation hubs to fuel smart city projects. It is essential to proactively build infrastructure before developing commercial real estate. H.E. Urban systems such as mobility, utilities, real estate development, environment and the social fabric of a city need to be strategically aligned to function seamlessly. The massive scale of urbanization in India calls for innovative solutions to tackle social needs through frugal technologies and local expertise. The first Smart Urbanisation dialogue focused on the value of spatial planning and effective governance to reduce investment in infrastructure. Ms. Preeti Sinha, set the pace for the convening by giving an introduction on the theme, urban issues in India and the need for good urban design. Urban population will grow from current 377 million to an estimated 590 million in 2030 and 700 million in 2050, with 50,000 slums dotting our 7,935 cities and towns. The country will witness polarized economic growth with 75% of the GDP being contributed by cities, making it imperative to plan for cities - the economic hubs of the country. The Way Forward Good urban design is a dynamic process that can be closely linked to gaining competitive advantages in the economy and improving quality of life for citizens. Taking giant strides towards development of Smart Cities, the onus to re-craft cities lies on the urban local bodies. Devolution of power is critical for the success of Smart City and AMRUT mission.
