1 Hana High & Elementary Code: 402 Status and Improvement Report Year -13 Focus On Standards Grades K-12 Contents This Status and Improvement Report has been prepared as part of the Department's education accountability system to provide regular, understandable accounts of our schools' performance and progress, as required by 302A-1004, Hawai'i Revised Statutes. Focus on Standards Description Setting Student Profile Community Profile Improvement Summary of Progress Resources p. 1 p. 1 pp. 2-3 p. 4 p. 5 This report describes the school and its setting; provides information about the school's administrators, teachers, students and facilities; summarizes progress made based on the school's improvement plan, and reports student achievement results along with other vital signs. Description The Hana Complex is a preschool-12th grade school complex serving less than 360 students along 50 miles of rugged East Maui coastline from Keanae to Kipahulu. The town of Hana is an agricultural community with three main employers; The Hotel Hana Maui, the County of Maui and Hana High and Elementary. We are considered a small, rural, isolated school. The nearest school in our Complex Area is in Lahaina on the West Maui coast. Our nearest complex area school in a 3 hour drive away. The Hana Complex is the center of student activities and many community events. The majority of our student population is of Hawaiian or Part-Hawaiian ancestry. The next largest ethnic group is Caucasian. After a decrease in our special education population, we experienced a slight increase during the -13 school year.. We have no ESL students. A majority of our students are on free or reduced lunch status. Certified Staff Facilities Vital Signs Quality Survey Student Conduct Retention or Completion Hawaii State Assessment Program Address: pp. 6-8 Other Information Hana High & Elementary Hana Highway Hana, Hawaii We believe strongly in early childhood education. Between the Hana and Kamehameha preschools, we are providing all Hana 3 and 4 year old students a pre-school education if their parents choose to enroll them. Because there is no licensed child care in Hana, it is our hope to partner with non-profit organizations to provide an infant and toddler program for our students and teachers. There is very strong community support for the Hana Complex. Non-profit organizations are located on our campus and contribute greatly to education and support of our students and involving them in community service activities. For eight years, the Hana Complex has had a 5-day school week with all of the required weekly instructional time occurring in four lengthened days. The 5th day was used for additional student tutoring and teacher meeting/training time. While we have enough students and teachers in our elementary school, it is a challenge to provide a comprehensive secondary education due to the small number of secondary students in the Hana Complex. Many of our secondary students attend on-line charter schools, the Lahainaluna Boarding Program and Kamehameha s. Our challenges at the beginning of the - school year was an aging technology infrastructure, no technology coordinator and an internet connection with a very narrow bandwidth. The narrow bandwidth did not allow Hana Complex to take advantage of the online technology and was particularly problematic in getting the state mandated tested completed. Our greatest challenge continues to be funding under the Weighted- Student Formula (WSF) which allocates funding on a per pupil basis. Funding is inadequate on a per-pupil basis when there are only 360 students to fund a complex with 14 grade levels Hana High & Elementary 01/2014 Page 1 of 8

3 Status and Improvement Report Community Profile Setting Year -13 The Community Profile information updated in this school report reflects selected 2010 demographics for the High Complex (HSC) area in which this school resides. Profile data are based on the 2010 U.S. Census, the American Community Survey (ACS) five-year estimates (centric to 2008), and incorporation of Hawaii s HSC boundary areas with updated 2010 Census geography. Figures for educational attainment and median household income are sample estimates obtained from the ACS, adapted to conform to HSC geography, and should be considered rough approximations of census counts. 4 Status and Improvement Report Summary of Progress Improvement Year -13 By the end of the - school much progress has been made regarding many of our challenges. Hana Complex was one of the first to receive a technology infrastructure upgrade as a result of the Hawaii DOE Race-To-The-Top initiative. State-of-the-Art servers were installed in a server room and new internet switches were installed throughout the campus. Wireless internet access is found in educational (classroom) spaces. As a result of the technology infrastructure upgrade, Hana Complex was exposed to individuals with great technology skills. We were able to contract a Technology Coordinator, to assist us in making computer repairs which allowed us to have three computer labs (elementary, middle and high schools). It took months to make the repairs but we now had more computers operating. Our internet bandwidth was extremely very narrow. Although we had three labs, we could not run but one lab at a time and it was very slow. Our bandwidth allowed us to only operate 5 computers at once. This lack of access caused major problems in getting all of the testing done for the entire complex. Finally, in May the internet service provider was able to increase the bandwidth to a normal rate. This was the last piece in obtaining proper internet access for our students. While WSF funding continued to be an issue that resulted in the loss of a great deal of funding, we were awarded a grant from the Superintendent's Reserve Fund. This allowed us to purchase enough teachers to offer the minimum number of secondary classes. During the -13 school year we were working with two contracted providers, Edison Learning and Keeney Consulting. Both providers introduced to the initiatives that would be occurring due to Race-To- The-Top. Teachers were provided training on Common Core State Standards, Data Teams and other initiatives. The Principal and the Athletic Director were provided training in the initiatives that would be taking place during the school year. The Hawaii State Assessment (HSA) results have not been officially released nor has the No Child Left Behind Report for the -. We are happy to report that Hana High had three Gates Millennium Scholars in Hana High & Elementary 01/2014 Page 4 of 8
