Introduction Project entitled Centre of Excellence in Environmental Analysis and Monitoring (CEEAM) was submitted to the European Commission as a response to the call QoL/Growth/EESD INTEGR, published by the European Commission in September After careful examination of both the call and the current situation in the Department of Analytical Chemistry, the Head of the Department, prof. Jacek Namieśnik, came to conclusion that its research profile, scientific output, already established international contacts, instrumentation possessed, and financial resources (ensuring fulfilment of the ⅓ rule) should work in favour of the proposal and decided to apply. Assistant professor Wojciech Chrzanowski was instrumental in paperwork and preparation of the proposal. We were among the smallest units applying for the status of the Centre of Excellence. On March 27, 2002, project co-ordinator received evaluation outline from the European referees. CEEAM project obtained high notes and soon afterwards, godfathers of the centre, prof. Jacek Namieśnik and prof. Wojciech Chrzanowski, were invited to carry on the negotiations, which were completed successfully in September The project was accepted on December 16, 2002 and the Centre of Excellence in Environmental Analysis and Monitoring became effective on January 1, Activity of the centre is based on the equipment and human resources of the Department of Analytical Chemistry (2 professors from the Department of Physical Chemistry are also involved), Chemical Faculty, Gdańsk University of Technology. During the negotiation process we contacted several leading scientists in the field, as well as renowned specialists from industry and finally we obtained the acceptation of the ISAB membership from the following persons. 4 The members of the ISAB serve as referees and reviewers and/or as persons suggesting other scientists for those positions. They also stay in touch, either personally or by , with the centre s staff and suggest their ideas and remarks on current activities, projects, lectures and other scientific events organized by the centre. Their kind criticism and devoted assistance is also very helpful in shaping centre s activities both within its lifetime and after the termination of the project. They are also instrumental in promoting centre s international contacts and exchange (especiall, though not exclusively, with their own institutions). Since January 2003 we have organised three ISAB meeting at Gdansk University of Technology. The inaugural meeting took place on February 20-21, During this meeting prof. Hartmut Frank was elected as the Chairman of the Board. The direction of CEEAM has also presented the main aims, description of work and expected results. During second meeting in November 14-15, 2003 PhD students and academic staff from the department presented the CEEAM s achievements. Scope of activities Thematic focus and planned growth of the centre complies with traditional fields of interests in the department. The Department of Analytical Chemistry is devoted to both basic and applied research in a broad range of topics with a focus on micro- and macro-environmental aspects of chemistry. Current research interest may be described as follows (Fig. 1): - Development of new analytical procedures (including solventless sample pretreatment techniques), - Design, construction, testing and validation of new measurement units and modules coupled to commercial apparatus, - Production of new analytical standards and reference materials, - Application of chemometry and artificial intelligence (artificial neural network ANN S) at the step of evaluation of multiparametric analytical data sets, - Modeling of processes of transport and fate of persistent organic pollutants (POP s), - Application of new approaches in the field of Environment Impact Assessment EIA, (sustainability, Life Cycle Assessment LCA), - Assessment of the state of specific element of the environment with use of standard procedures, - Training and education of personnel of analytical laboratories (short courses and postgraduates studies), - Preparation of handbooks and manuals, - Organization of conferences and workshops. 11 ** IF Impact Factor *** actually at various stages of publication process (from sent to the editor to in press) **** estimated We would like to stress that one can observe clear evolution in the publications profile towards larger number of papers in English and, therefore, in international journals. We must remark, however that it is our duty and our role to publish in the national journals as well. We do so especially when general matters and popularization of science is the subject of a paper. English is still not popular enough among the wider public in this country, hence we must do it in Polish. Anyway, we dare to conclude that the aforementioned change from about 30% down to 10% of papers in Polish results from our efforts towards internationalisation of our PhD studies, which strongly favored lecturing in English and led both to improvement of its mastery among the PhD candidates and to larger number of papers published in English. We included impact factors as the only applicable way to measure the quality of our papers by indicating the quality of the journals we publish in. Real quotations numbers are not applicable as the papers published within the project lifetime are too new and poorly reflexted in the databases (usually the maximum quotations is achieved after 3 to 5 years since publication date). These statements can are clearly illustrated by tables 3a through 3g, which provide some scientometric information on scientific output by the CEEAM members. More citations are definitely observed for time span than for (see 3a vs. 3b and 3 d vs. 3e). Rank of CEEAM among the departmets of the Chemical Faculty is clearly visible in Table 3g, where it ranks first in all categories but average IF per paper (it ranks fifth but the leading departments are those involved in research in biochemistry, biotechnology, etc, which disciplines enjoy top interest nowadays and, therefore, their journals also lead in IFs). We would like to stress that we have a strong feeling that real numbers of quotations will also reflect the rise associable with the CEEAM project but the proof of this fact will become available no sooner than about Table 3a.
