10 Your PhD at a Max Planck Institute Doctoral Grant Contribution to costs of living Nature of an award Works independently without instructions No requirement but opportunity to participate in institute events Not employed Not an employer in the meaning of the Works Constitution Act No compulsory attendance: holidays, business trips don t need to be approved, no timekeeping Doctoral Students with Support Contract Work is to be conducted for the MPI Incorporated into the work of the MPI Is given instructions regarding location, duration and scope of the work staff member An employer in the meaning of the Works Constitution Act Compulsory attendance: holidays, business travel, etc. must be approved No right to choose between contract and grant Institute management makes an offer on type of support and duration

13 Career Perspectives for Research Group Leaders Max Planck Research Groups offer junior scientists who hold a doctoral degree an excellent opportunity to qualify for a further career at a high level. Group Leaders are appointed by the President and similar to directors at Max Planck Institutes enjoy an independent status within the Institute. Today there are 125 Max Planck Research Groups. The Max Planck Research Group Leaders are from all over the world, a significant (As per 01/2013) number of them comes from the Top 20 universities in the Shanghai Ranking.
