4 Do I qualify for a certificate? Overall Requirements 9 units of core CD classes 1 or more electives Must have a C or better 20% or more of completed courses must be at LAVC Core CD classes: CD 1 Child Growth & Development CD 3 or 4 Creative Experiences for Children, I or II CD 11 Home School and Community Relations

5 How do I apply for a certificate? Step 1: Determine which certificates you are eligible to receive. The Child Development Program Booklet can be found on the CD Dept. website at:

6 Step 2: Complete and turn in the required application form Applications are available in the CD Dept. Office, Family Resource Center, or Academic Affairs Office in Admin. 100 Fill out all personal information accurately and completely. The name you use will appear on your certificate. The address you list is where your certificate will be mailed. *Submit form to Academic Affairs, Admin #100

7 Step 3: Receive your certificate in the mail. Within approximately 3 4 weeks, you will receive your certificate in the mail. The package will contain: Congratulations letter Certificate Wallet-sized copy of the certificate In addition, some certificates will appear on your permanent LAVC transcript.

11 Level 1 Assistant Teacher Option 1: any 6-units of CD coursework Option 2: completed an accredited HERO/ROP program in high school No experience required.

12 Level 2 Associate Teacher Option 1: 12-units of CD coursework (must have CD 1, 3 or 4, and 11) 50 days of experience in the last 2 years Option 2: Completed CDA credential

13 What can I count as experience? 3+ hours per day minimum (50 days = 150 hours or more) Working with children ages 0-8 Must be in a supervised setting Must be within the last 2 years Can be paid or volunteer/internship hours

14 Level 3 Teacher Option 1: 24-units of CD coursework (must have CD 1, 3 or 4, and 11) 16-units of General Education coursework with 175 days of experience within last 4 years Option 2: AA-degree or higher in CD or related field 3-units of supervised field experience (CD 22, 23, 29)

15 What are the requirements for General Education coursework? Complete a minimum of 16-units with one course from each area: English Math or Science Humanities Social Science Only degree applicable courses will be accepted. 16 LAVC Catalog Example of a Non-Degree Applicable Course: 110 Introduction to Algebraic Concepts (5) NDA Prerequisite: None. Lecture, 5 hours. The course covers the fundamentals of arithmetic through beginning algebra skills that are essential for Elementary Algebra. Topics include operations on whole num- bers, fractions, decimals, and integers; order of operations; ratios, proportions, percents, and applications; perimeter, area, and vol- ume applications; metric and English con- versions; and simple algebraic expressions and equations. Basic word problems that embody these concepts are included throughout the course.

18 Step 2: Complete the Permit Application Form. Download the application form from this website: The application is a writeable PDF, so you can type in all of your information and print out 2 copies: 1 for your records 1 to send in to the CCTC

19 Application Instructions: Complete Section 1 with your personal information. This is what your name will look like on your permit and the address used for mailing. Complete Section 2 by selecting I am applying for my first CA credential/permit from the drop down menu. Use the drop down menu under Child Development Permit to select the appropriate permit level. Complete Section 3 by answering yes or no to each of the professional fitness questions. Be sure to sign and date your application.

20 Step 3: Gather your transcripts. You will need to submit official, sealed transcripts from all colleges that you have attended. 21 Step 4: Confirm your work experience. Have previous employers or supervisors write a letter verifying your work experience: Letter should be on official letterhead Should clearly state the duration of your work/volunteer experience Make a photocopy of the letter Send the original with your application Keep the copy for your records

22 Step 5: Complete Live Scan fingerprinting Follow this link to view the Live Scan application form: Complete the personal information section. Make sure that DOJ and FBI are both checked under Level of Service. Print out 3 copies of the completed form and bring them with you to the Live Scan agency. 23 Step 6: Pay the application fees Prepare a Cashier s Check/Money Order for $70.00 for new application fees. Check should be made out to: California Commission on Teacher Credentialing Make a photocopy of the payment for your records.

24 Step 7: Mail your completed application package. Gather all of your completed materials. Enclose the following in a large envelope: Completed application form Official transcripts Verification of Work Experience Completed Live Scan form Payment for $70.00
