4 The vegan market... Research suggests that veganism is moving into the mainstream. The number of vegans in the UK was estimated at around 180,000 or 0.3% of the population in However, a 2012 study commissioned by the Vegetarian Resource Group and undertaken by Harris Interactive found that 2.5 percent of the country identified themselves as "vegan," up from 1 percent in This demonstrates that the number of vegans in the UK has more than doubled in just three years. The 2008, "Vegetarianism in America" study published by Vegetarian Times Magazine, puts the number of U.S. adult vegetarians at 7.3 million, or 3.2 percent of the population. Of those, 0.5 percent, or 1 million, are vegans who consume no animal products at all. Another 11.9 million, or 5.2 percent of the population, claim to be interested in vegetarian diets. Organisers of Europe s largest Vegan Festivals VEGFESTuk have predicted that most people in the UK could be predominantly vegan by 2020 if the present surge in interest in vegan diets continues. The Vegan Society, Vegetarian Society and VEGFEST all report a 40% increase in interest for vegetarian and vegan diets.

The great majority of vegans (85%) think that the internet has made them feel less isolated as a vegan. Almost all vegans surveyed (96%) have used the internet to locate vegan products, and three quarters (75%) have purchased vegan products online, with heaviest usage in the UK and US (3). UK vegan internet users are much more likely to buy products online than other UK internet users, with the majority having purchased a product online in the last 6 months (84%). FREQUENCY DISCOUNTS: Frequency discounts are based on the number of insertions run in a contract year. Advertisers who increase their frequency will be rebated; advertisers who cancel or fail to fulfil a contract will be billed the difference between the earned rate and the contract rate.
