12 Redskins Firsts The Washington Redskins became the first and only team in NFL history to win a World Championship in their first year by defeating the Chicago Bears to claim the 1937 title. On February 13, 1937, the National Football League approved the transfer of the Boston Redskins franchise to Washington, D.C. The Redskins, in their first season in Washington, compiled an 8-3 record on the road to the NFL title. On September 16, 1937, the Redskins played their first game in D.C. Washington was victorious over the New York Giants at Griffith Stadium, On August 9, 1938, the Washington Redskins formed the NFL s first marching band. Later, on August 17, 1938, Hail to the Redskins made its debut as the first fight song by any team in the NFL. In 1938, the Redskins became the first team in the NFL to have its own radio network carry all its games. In 1950, the Washington Redskins became the first team in the NFL to have all its games televised locally. On September 26, 1954, the Redskins became the first team in the NFL to have its game televised regionally, when their contest at San Francisco was televised back to Washington and throughout the South. The first regular season game at D.C. Stadium (re-named RFK Stadium in 1968) was played on October 1, It didn t come easy, but on December 17, 1961 the Redskins finally got their first D.C. Stadium win in the 61 season finale with Dallas. Dickie James scored four touchdowns, a Redskins single-game record (Larry Brown tied it in 1973), to lead the Redskins to a victory. The win ended a 23- game winless streak for the Redskins dating back to the 1960 season. The Washington Redskins became the first and only team in NFL history to win three Super Bowls (XVII, XXII, XXVI) with three different quarterbacks (Joe Theismann, Doug Williams, Mark Rypien).
