1 Quick Start Guide Thank you for choosing Arkeia Server Backup, we are confident that it will meet your requirements for a powerful yet simple-to-use backup management solution. This Quick Start Guide will show you how to make your first basic backup. The Arkeia Server Backup User Guide describes backups and restorations on single tape drive and tape library systems. Context-sensitive online help is always available in a window associated with the Arkeia Server Backup interface. A server with Arkeia Server Backup installed on it can be backed up to an attached tape drive or tape library. The backups can be performed immediately, deferred to a later time on the same day, or repeated periodically. The backup is configured and controlled from an interface which can be located remotely, on the network. 3 ARKEIA SOFTWARE LICENSE AGREEMENT In order to preserve and protect its rights within the framework of currently applicable legislation, Arkeia Corporation and Arkeia SA, hereinafter referred to as ARKEIA, does not sell rights to this SOFTWARE, but grants the right to use this SOFTWARE, within the terms of this license agreement, hereinafter referred to as LICENSE AGREEMENT, and expressly retains ownership rights to all ARKEIA SOFTWARE. If you do not agree with all the terms and conditions of this LICENSE AGREEMENT you can obtain a refund by returning the SOFTWARE, all its manuals, its documentation and the original sealed license envelope, in salable condition, to the place you obtained them. 1. GRANT OF LICENSE. In return for payment of LICENSE fees included in the cost of the SOFTWARE and your commitment to comply with the terms and conditions of this LICENSE AGREEMENT as well as the limited warranty attached to, ARKEIA, the licenser, grants to you, the LICENSEE, the non-exclusive and non-transferable right to use the SOFTWARE on a single computer known as the backup server, here in after referred to as the SERVER, and its associated client computers, here in after referred to as CLIENTS, provided that the terms and conditions of the license are complied with. If the SERVER or CLIENT on which the SOFTWARE is operated constitutes a system with several users, the LICENSE AGREEMENT shall apply to all such users without incurring additional costs. ARKEIA reserves all rights that are not expressly granted to the LICENSEE. 2. COPYRIGHT. The beneficiary of the LICENSE is the owner of the magnetic media, or any other type of media on which the SOFTWARE is initially, or subsequently, recorded or stored. However, this License is granted on the express condition that ARKEIA retains copyrights to the SOFTWARE recorded on the original media as well as copyrights to all copies made, irrespective of the format and the media of said original media and said copies This LICENSE does not constitute a sale of the original SOFTWARE or of any copy thereof. 3. REPRODUCTION RESTRICTIONS. This SOFTWARE and the accompanying written materials are protected by copyright. Unauthorized reproduction of the SOFTWARE, including its modification, integration or inclusion in another software, or of the accompanying written materials is strictly forbidden. The LICENSEE is liable to legal sanctions for any copyright infringement caused or prompted by any breach, on the part of the LIC- ENSEE, of the terms and conditions of this LICENSE AGREEMENT. Subject to the above-mentioned restrictions, the LICENSEE is authorized to make one (1) backup copy of the SOFTWARE if said SOFTWARE is not copy-protected. - Notice of copyright must appear on the backup copy. 4 4. RESTRICTIONS OF USE. The LICENSEE is authorized to physically transfer the SOFTWARE from one SERVER to another SERVER on condition that said SOFTWARE is completely and totally removed from the original SERVER. Electronic transfers of the SOFTWARE from one SERVER to another within a distribution network for the purpose of copying the SOFT- WARE or the accompanying written materials are strictly forbidden. The LICENSEE shall not modify, adapt, translate, reverse engineer, decompile, disassemble or create written materials based on the SOFTWARE, and shall not modify, adapt, translate or write literature based on the written materials without the prior express written consent from ARKEIA. 5. TRANSFER RESTRICTIONS. No person whomsoever shall be authorized to operate this SOFTWARE without the prior express written consent from ARKEIA. Any beneficiary of a transfer thus authorized shall be bound by the terms and conditions of this LICENSE AGREEMENT and the limited warranty attached there. Under no circumstances shall the LICENSEE be entitled to transfer, convey, lease or sell the SOFTWARE, nor shall it be entitled to dispose thereof, in any manner whether temporary or permanent, except where otherwise expressly provided for herein. 6. CANCELLATION. This LICENSE AGREEMENT shall remain valid until its cancellation and shall be canceled, as a right without prior notice by ARKEIA should the LICENSEE fail to comply with the terms and conditions of this LICENSE AGREEMENT. In the event of cancellation, the LIC- ENSEE shall immediately destroy all written materials and all copies of the SOFTWARE, including modified copies, where appropriate. 7. MISCELLANEOUS. This LICENSE AGREEMENT is governed by the laws of the State of California (USA) if the LICENSEE acquired the SOFT- WARE in the USA with respect to ARKEIA, their successors and assigns. This LICENSE AGREEMENT is governed by the laws of the country of France if the LICENSEE acquired the SOFTWARE in any country except the USA, with respect to ARKEIA, their successors and assigns. 5 WARRANTY * ARKEIA warrants its SOFTWARE for a period of ninety (90) days as of the date of delivery thereof. This warranty also includes reconditioning or replacing SOFT- WARE media. ARKEIA does not warrant and does not enter into any commitments regarding the content of the documentation and the software. ARKEIA further disclaims any implicit warranties tied to the sale of the right to use license of this SOFTWARE with respect to its quality, its results, its merchantability or its suitability for a particular purpose. 6 Prerequisites Arkeia Server Backup needs the Java runtime environment (JRE), version or later The JRE is available at Arkeia Server Backup can be installed on and run from any Linux computer on the network which has access to the Linux server you are backing up. You need to have at least one tape drive acessible to the computer on which you are installing Arkeia Server Backup. Install Arkeia Server Backup The Arkeia Server Backup application is supplied as an RPM package, or TAR.GZ. Linux rpm Log in as root, then run the rpm utility. $ su root Password: <Enter the root password> # rpm --install arkeia-server i386.rpm # rpm --install arkeiasb-gui i386.rpm The version numbers may be different for your files. If you experience problems with the installation, try again using the -vv and --force options of the rpm utility to display more information, which may help you to overcome the problems. Enter man rpm for more information about the rpm utility. UNIX tar.gz Use this procedure also for Linux platforms which do not support rpm. To install, first log in as root and uncompress the distribution files, then run the installation utility. $ su root Password: <Enter the root password> # tar -xvzf arkeiasb-server i386.tar.gz # tar -xvzf arkeiasb-gui i386.tar.gz The tar utility will create a directory named arkeiasb , which contains the Arkeia Server Backup software. 7 # cd arkeiasb then run the supplied installation utility with the command: #./install The installation procedure will start and ask some questions before proceeding. If the installation has been completed successfully, you will be able to use Arkeia Server Backup immediately. If not, try to solve the installation issues by running the supplied installation procedure again. Start Arkeia Server Backup On a command line, enter arkeiasb, to start the application interface. Enter your server name, but leave Password blank, you can set up a password later. Click on Connect and the Arkeia Server Backup interface will start at Licenses management screen. 8 Arkeia Server Backup Interface The window on the left is a context-sensitive User Guide. The window on the right is the interface to Arkeia Server Backup. Licenses The first screen to check is the Licenses Management screen. Click on Enter licenses in the User Guide to see how to enter the license information you received from Arkeia Sales when you purchased Arkeia Server Backup. Licenses are explained in detail in the User Guide under How licenses work on page 11. Make the first backup We will configure and run a basic backup to give you the feel of Arkeia Server Backup. First, Arkeia needs to find your tape drive or drives. 8 Arkeia Server Backup Quick Start Guide

9 Tape drives Click on the Manage hardware button at the top of the interface window to access the Hardware Management screen: Click on the Detect button and Arkeia Server Backup will find and list the tape drives attached to this server. In the example above, a tape library has been detected, your screen will show the tape drives connected to the Arkeia server. We can now create a backup. Arkeia Server Backup Quick Start Guide 9

10 Create a Backup We will create the simplest type of backup: an interactive total backup. You start this backup manually, and it copies all the files selected to tape. Click on the Manage backups button at the top of the interface window, and the Backup Management screen will appear: Click on the New button to start configuring a test backup. Three steps are needed to configure a backup: 1. Name the backup configuration. 2. Select the files for this backup configuration. 3. Select the tape drive. 10 Arkeia Server Backup Quick Start Guide

11 Step 1: Name the backup Enter the name for this first test backup in the Name field. We will call it TEST_INTERACTIVE_BACKUP. Check the Type field: if INTERACTIVE is not showing, click on the drop-down button and select INTERACTIVE from the list. Now click on the Next button to go to Step 2. 12 Step 2: Choose files to be backed up In the panel below the Look in: field, you will see the name of your server listed. Double click on the server name to reveal its sub-directories. Double-click on a sub-directory to reveal its sub-directories. You can keep navigating in this way down to file level, if needed. When you reach a directory you want to include in the backup, highlight it and click on the Select button. For this exercise, try to choose a directory or directories totalling MB of data. Selected directories and files will be listed in the lower panel. To remove a file from the list, highlight it and click on the Remove button. 13 Step 3: Select the drive Check the box next to the device drive in your system that you wish to use for this backup. There is only one drive to choose in our system. Now click on the Finish button to complete this backup configuration. A panel will appear to tell you what to put on the label for the first tape which will be used for this backup. We will label ours TEST_INTERACTIVE_BACKUP TAPE 1. Make sure you physically label the tape with this title so that you can locate it quickly if you need to restore from it. Click on Ok when you have done this, and you will be returned to the Backup Management screen. Start the backup Notice that the configuration you just created is listed, and marked Ready. 14 Start button. Click on this button now, and the Job Activity screen will appear: This screen displays information about the job currently running. If another tape is needed, the backup will pause and you will be asked to label and insert another tape. Doing More Congratulations! You have just completed your first backup with Arkeia Server Backup. Of course, this was the simplest type of backup possible, and uses only a fraction of the power of Arkeia Server Backup. Now that you know where to start, follow the instructions in the User Guide and the online help window to create backup programs of greater complexity by combining these available backup schemes: Total backups of all the directories and files you have selected to include in this backup, Differential backups of the files you have selected, but only those files which have changed since the last total backup; or 14 Arkeia Server Backup Quick Start Guide

15 Incremental backups of the files you have selected, but only if those files which have changed since the last backup of any kind; with these backup start alternatives: INTERACTIVE, which you start manually at any time; DEFERRED, which will start at a time you specify in the future; or PERIODIC, which will start and repeat at intervals you specify.
