It describes the dilemmas and tensions inherent in these roles. It cites recent studies suggesting that nearly all CMHCs provide services to older adults, and that the majority of centers now offer specialized geriatric services. Nonetheless, mental illness among older adults continues to be undertreated, and seniors continue to be underrepresented in these care settings. It describes the service delivery network, and considers the role of Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs). It argues that the service delivery system is ill-equipped to meet the needs of older adults who suffer from substance use disorders and calls for professional education to alert social workers in all settings to the signs of these problems.
