Digital Aquarium s Photoshop CS3 Workshop Guide for Novice Users About Photoshop Photoshop is the industry standard for graphic design and photo correction. The workshop introduces the basic functions Photoshop, including Layers, Picking Colors, Making Selections, Color Adjustments, various Tool Options, the History Palette and some basic Filters. To understand Photoshop CS3 requires practice with the software over time. Persistent creating is the best way to learn the program. This guide provides an overview of important menu choices, vital tools, helpful windows, and useful tips. An Overview Open the Photoshop CS3 program from the Applications/All Programs Menu on your Mac or PC. Part of getting started requires the opening of vital windows and choosing a new or existing Active Image Area. If not already present on the desktop screen, go to WINDOW on the menu bar and click the following with your mouse: Color, History, Layers, Options, and Tools. Some of the windows are demonstrated in the workshop. Choices from the MAIN MENU BAR, a tool on the OPTION BAR, tools on the TOOL BAR, a select layer on the LAYERS WINDOW, and sequential steps on the HISTORY WINDOW will change the Active Image Area. (fig.1) To create new image in Photoshop, go to the File menu and choose New to create a new file with specifications. To work on an existing file, choose one of the following: Open, Browse, Open as Smart Object, Open Recent, Place, Import. The file is called the Active Image Area when open. There may be more than one image open on your screen but only one Active Image Area can be edited at a time. Editing images within Photoshop is easier when using selection options from the Select menu or by using one of the selection tools. Further control over a Selection can be made by: A. choosing a selection tool then enhancing it by choosing an option from the Option Bar B. making a selection then choosing Inverse from the Select menu C. modifying a selection by choosing Modify from the Select menu. 1

C D E G (fig.1) F A B Tool Bar Active Image Area Option Bar Menu Bar History Window Layer Window Color Window A B C D E F G Changing the Color Mode & Resolution (DPI) Grayscale is composed entirely of shades of gray, varying from black at the weakest intensity to white at the strongest. RGB Color (red, green, blue) should be the basic color mode if the export of your image will be destined for screen preview, web usage, and digital video. CMYK Color (cyan, magenta, yellow and key black) should be the basic color mode if the export of your image will be released for print from a printer. A resolution of 72 DPI (dots per inch) is a basic quality for screen preview, web usage, and digital video. 150 DPI is a basic quality for text documents. Any printed image from a business card to a billboard advertisement should have a resolution of 300 DPI for colored images. Images that have a significant higher resolution than 300 will take longer to process when saving and uploading. 2

Using Layers Any part of an image revealed in Photoshop has one or more corresponding Layers. A layer is a smaller copy of the larger image. It is vital that the LAYERS window is open at all times. Each layer serves as a means to alter the image in the active image area. Each layer can be locked, hidden, removed, switched in order, have effects added to, and its opacity reduced. You can adjust one layer at a time or adjust the entire Active Image Area at once. To change any part of the image, it is important to unlock the layer if it has a locked symbol on it. To make a needed layer change on the Active Image Area, use the mouse to select a layer. This layer should be highlighted Blue. (H) Ways to unlock a layer: A. Double click the locked layer with the mouse and after the New Layer box appears, then choose okay with the mouse. B. Choose duplicate layer from the LAYER menu and after the duplicate layer appears in the Layers window, click and drag the locked layer to the garbage can on the bottom right of the Layers window. To create a new layer: A. Go up to the LAYER on the menu bar and choose New (I) B. Go to the LAYERS Window and choose the create the create a new layer icon (J) on the left of the garbage can. Using the Layers Window: A. Select a layer and use a tool from the tool bar and control its function with the option bar. B. Select a layer and choose a function from the EDIT menu. C. Select a layer and shuffle it around within the Layers window. D. Select a layer and choose options from the Layers window. (I) (J) (H) 3

Selecting All or Part of the Image A. Choosing All from the Select menu will select everything on the blue highlighted layer in the Layers Window. B. Choosing ALL Layers from the Select menu will select all the layers (except any locked layers). All the layers on the Layers Window will be highlighted. C. Choosing one tool from one of the Selection tool groups will change part or the entire image after a selection is made. The main selection tool groups on the tool bar include the Shape Marquee (Square, Elliptical, Single Row, and Single column), the Lasso tool (Lasso, Polygonal, Magnetic) and the Magic Wand (Quick Selection Tool). Deselecting the Image A. Go to SELECT on the menu bar and choose DESELECT or All LAYERS B. Press the COMMAND key and the D key for Mac users or press the CONTROL key and D key for PC users. 4

Changing Actions and Steps The History Window will record limited History States of the menu choices and tool usage in sequential steps from the opening of your file up until the last action. You can control the amount of History States within Preferences/Performance under the Photoshop Menu. To switch between states, choose it with the mouse. The active state will be highlighted blue (K). Choosing Undue, Step Forward, or Step Backward under EDIT on the menu bar will undo or redo recent changes to the image. K Pressing the CONTROL key on a PC or the COM- MAND key on a Mac with the Z key will undo a recent task. Pressing the CONTROL Key on a PC or the COMMAND on a Mac with the Z key and the F1 key will redo a recent task. Choosing, Changing, or Applying Default Colors The Foreground color and Background color are your default choices for the two color boxes on the Tool Bar and the Color Window. After choosing Fill form the EDIT menu click okay to keep the same color or click the COLOR Box to choose and apply a new color E. After choosing Stroke from the EDIT menu choose to apply one of the choices given. 5

Changing the Active Image Area Using IMAGE on the menu bar: A. Choose MODE to change the color mode by checking your choice (Grayscale, Indexed color, RGB/screen setting, CMYK/print setting, etc) B. Choose ADJUSTMENTS to change an array of color settings. Here are some choices: Levels, Contrast, Color Balance, Brightness/ Contrast, Hue/Saturation, Photo Filter, Shad ow/highlight, etc. C. Choose IMAGE SIZE to change the pixel dimension (W & H by percent or pixels, document size (W& H by percent, inches, cm, mm, points, picas, and columns), resolution (pixels/in or pixels/cm). *To maintain the proportion of your image, keep the Scale styles, Constrain proportions, and Resample Image boxes checked. You can also choose a Canvas extension color. E. Choose ROTATE CANVAS to change the orientation of the Active Image Area. Then choose one of the following (180 degrees, 90 degrees Clock Wise, 90 degrees Counter Clock Wise, Arbitrary, Flip Canvas Horizontal, Flip Canvas Vertical) 6

Using the Tools After selecting the layer, choose a tool by selecting it with a mouse click. Some tools are grouped together within the same box. To change the tools on some of the boxes, click on the black triangle located on the bottom right corner of the box. Notice that the image on the right hand side of the option bar will change to reflect the same tool chosen on the tool bar. Options or unique functions of each tool can be changed on the option bar. Some tools are presented next: Rectangular Marquee Tool The marquee tool selects areas within a layer. Within the same box there are: the elliptical tool, square tool, single column tool, and single row tool. Lasso Tool The lasso tool can select areas in a layer. Within the same box there are: the polygonal tool and the magnetic tool. Crop Tool The crop tool captures the image within the crop box lines. Spot Healing Brush Tool The healing brush tool deletes the high contrast of a picture. Within the same box there are: the healing brush tool, patch tool, and red eye tool. When retouching a photograph, all of these are optimal tools. Move Tool The move tool can move around all objects within a layer. It can also move a layer to another active image area. Magic Wand Tool The magic wand tool is a selection tool. It selects similar colors in accordance with a number entered for the tolerance space on the option bar. Within the same box, there is the quick selection tool. Brush Tool The brush tool draws or paints with the foreground or background color. Within the same box there are: the pencil tool, and the color replacement tool. 7

Using the Tools Clone Stamp Tool The clone stamp tool duplicates selected parts of the active image area. Press the ALT key while mouse clicking the area you want to duplicate. Saving the layers as a jpeg file will combine or flatten the layers. There is a difference between Save, Save As, and Save for Web & Devices within the File menu. Choosing Save will immediately save the file at the current state and file type with all its settings to its default location. Choosing Save As will allow the file name to be changed as well as the file format and the place where the file can be stored. Choosing a format from Save for Web & Devices will display different file formats that will useful for uploading to web sites or attaching to an address as well as designating the place where the file can be stored. 8
